Plant community compositional stability over 40 years in a Fraser River Estuary tidal freshwater marsh

<p class="MsoNormal"><span>Long-term data sets documenting temporal changes in vegetation communities are uncommon, yet imperative for understanding trends and triggering potential conservation management interventions. For example, decreasing species diversity and increasing non-native species abundance may be indicative of decreasing community stability. We explored long-term plant community change over a 40-year period through the contribution of data collected in 2019 to two historical datasets collected in 1979 and 1999 to evaluate decadal changes in plant community biodiversity in a tidal freshwater marsh in the Fraser River Estuary in British Columbia, Canada. We found that plant assemblages were characterized by similar indicator species, but most other indicator species changed, and that overall </span><span>α-diversity</span><span> decreased while </span><span>β</span><span>-diversity increased. Further, we found evidence for plant assemblage homogenization through the increased abundance of invasive species such as yellow flag iris (<em>Iris pseudacorus</em>), and reed canary grass (<em>Phalaris arundinacea</em>). These observations may inform concepts of habitat stability in the absence of direct anthropogenic disturbance and corroborate globally observed trends of native species loss and non-native species encroachment. Our results indicate that within the Fraser River Estuary, active threat management may be necessary in areas of conservation concern in order to prevent further native species biodiversity loss. </span></p>

Empirical data on growth and residency of juvenile Pacific salmon in North America estuaries

<p>Dataset compiling empirical data on estuarine growth and residency of Pacific salmon in North America. We conducted a systematic literature review to create this database, starting with a literature search in <i>Web of Science Core Collection</i> through Simon Fraser University's library proxy on April 24th, 2018, using the search parameters (salmon, Oncorhynchus) AND (estuary*) AND (residen* OR growth OR survival OR mortality), which returned 681 results (these results were presented in&nbsp;Arbeider 2018). We updated the search on March 29th, 2020, which produced 24 additional papers published after April 2018, and again on July 7th, 2022 which yielded another 31 papers published since March 2020.&nbsp;From these results, we extracted papers that research Pacific salmonids and whose study estuary was in North America. From this reduced list of papers, we extracted growth and residency parameters, as well as other relevant data. For complete methods please refer to:</p><p>Arbeider, M. et al. (In press). Biological and physical controls on multidecadal acidification in a eutrophic estuary

<p>Estuaries support many ecologically and economically important resources that are especially vulnerable to ocean acidification from rising anthropogenic CO<sub>2</sub>. However, complex local processes in estuaries complicate and may disguise long-term pH trends. For example, terrestrial nutrient runoff and marine coastal upwelling may exacerbate pH variability and declines. We investigated eutrophication impacts on acidification in a central California estuary, Elkhorn Slough, which receives high nutrient loads from intensive surrounding agriculture and upwelling of the California Current System. We examined drivers of acidification including nutrients, ecosystem metabolism, and upwelling by modelling pH trends over 20 years using a Generalized Additive Mixed Model at four sites from the National Estuarine Research Reserve Systemwide Monitoring Program and collected additional water samples to calculate aragonite saturation. Our models revealed acidification trends over two decades which were more pronounced near the marine inlet. Near the marine inlet, high nutrient levels and lower buffering are associated with the greatest rate of acidification in the estuary, which was four times greater than the trend from anthropogenic CO<sub>2</sub> alone. However, tidally restricted areas experienced a different acidification pattern. A tidally restricted site recorded higher mean pH and aragonite saturation and increased pH levels associated with stronger upwelling conditions supplying marine-sourced nutrients. Therefore, variable ecosystem metabolism and tidal cycles are threats to acidity in this location. The effects of enhanced seasonal cycles or long-term trends in different zones of the estuary have implications for monitoring with a temporal frequency and scale to capture coastal acidification risks in estuaries.</p>

Spicer, Parker MacCready, and Zhaoqing Yang. The manuscript is being considered for publication in Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans (2024). The article analyzes the effect of a tidal turbine farm on incident and reflected tidal energy fluxes in the Salish Sea. Files are in MATLAB data and .m format with some .txt and shape files. Files named figX.m create the corresponding Figure X using provided .mat and other files. Variable names and units correspond to graphed data of each figure in the journal article.</p>

The European green crab (<em>Carcinus maenas</em>), one of the most widespread marine invasive species, is an effective predator associated with clam and crab population declines outside of its native range. In the U.S. Pacific Northwest, green crab has recently increased in abundance and expanded its distribution, generating concern for estuarine ecosystems and associated aquaculture production. However, regionally-specific information on the trophic impacts of invasive green crab is very limited. We compared the stomach contents of green crabs collected on shellfish aquaculture beds versus natural intertidal sloughs in Willapa Bay, Washington, to provide the first in-depth description of European green crab diet at a particularly crucial time for regional management. We first identified putative prey items using DNA metabarcoding of stomach content samples. We compared diet composition across sites using prey presence/absence and an index of species-specific relative abundance. For eight prey species, we also calibrated metabarcoding data to quantitatively compare DNA abundance between prey items, and to describe an &lsquo;average&rsquo; green crab diet at an intertidal slough and an actively cultivated Manila clam bed. From the stomach contents of 61 green crabs, we identified 54 unique taxa belonging to nine phyla. The stomach contents of crabs collected from cultivated Manila clam beds were significantly different from the stomach contents of crabs collected at natural intertidal sloughs. Across all sites, arthropods were the most frequently detected prey, with the native hairy shore crab (<em>Hemigrapsus oregonensis</em>) the single most common prey item. Of the eight species included in the quantitative model, two ecologically-important native species &ndash; the sand shrimp (<em>Crangon franciscorum</em>) and the Pacific staghorn sculpin (<em>Leptocottus armatus</em>) &ndash; were the most abundant in crab stomach contents, when present. In addition to providing timely information on green crab diet, our research demonstrates the novel application of a recently developed model for more quantitative DNA metabarcoding. This represents another step in the ongoing evolution of DNA-based diet analysis towards producing the quantitative data necessary for modeling invasive species impacts.</p>

Episodes of critical salinity values in the estuary of the river Ulla (Galicia, Spain) in the hydrological years 1961 to 2022

<p>The dataset includes the number of critical salinity episodes, as a function of salinity thresholds and their duration, that could have caused mortality events of different intensity of bivalves of commercial interest in the Ulla river estuary (Galicia, Spain) for hydrological years 1962 to 2022.&nbsp;</p> <p>A hydrological year is defined as the one starting in October and ending in September of the following year. The series includes four of the possible critical episodes defined by Parada <em>et al., </em>2012 (DOI: 10.1007/s12237-011-9426-2): Salinity (S) below 10 for 1 day (S10-1d); S&lt;30 for 18 consecutive days (S30-18d); S&lt;5 for 1 day or more (S5-1d) and S&lt;30 for 19 consecutive days or more (S30-19d). The first two types of events can cause moderate mortalities of commercial bivalve molluscs and the second severe mortalities (Parada <em>et al., </em>2012; DOI:&nbsp;10.1007/s12237-011-9426-2). Moderate mortalities are defined as events where mortalities of less than 50% of the cockle (<em>Cerastodema edule</em>, L. 1758) and up to 15% of the clams <em>Ruditapes decussatus</em> (L., 1758) and <em>R. philippinarum</em> (A. Adams &amp; Reeve, 1850) are recorded in the estuary. Severe mortalities are defined as events in which mortalities of 50% or more of the population of <em>C. edule</em> and the clam <em>Venerupis corrugata</em> (Gmelin, 1791), and 15% or more of <em>R. decussatus</em> and <em>R. phillipinarum</em> are recorded (Parada <em>et al., </em>2012; DOI:&nbsp;10.1007/s12237-011-9426-2). The file is composed of 5 columns: the first column contains the hydrological year and the following columns contain the number of episodes recorded for each of the four categories (S10-1d, S30-18d, S5-1d and S30-19d).</p>
