Data from: Nutrient enrichment negatively impacts flowers and pollinators, especially in warmer climates

Using data from 14 plant and pollinator communities in three continents, we assessed the effect of different fertilization treatments on plant and pollinator abundance and richness. The 14 sites spanned a wide range of ambient temperature and soil fertility and replicated a long-term nutrient experiment identically. This allowed us to separate the role of nutrients across ambient site conditions to determine whether effects vary with environmental conditions. We found an interactive effect of temperature and soil fertility with nutrient enrichment, with N input having a more negative impact on plants and pollinators in warmer climates. Moreover, the effects on flower abundance were more pronounced in high fertility soils, while plant richness was more affected in poor fertility soils. In general, the effect of nutrient enrichment in colder climates was positive, and pollinators were more responsive to nutrient enrichment than plants. These results highlight the high susceptibility of warmer regions and particularly their pollinators to nutrient enrichment. This chapter is presented in a format in which Results and Discussion sections are written together, to match the format of the Journal selected for future submission.

Sampling sites where ecological indices were used to assess the impact of different environmental stressors in aquatic environments in Argentina

Dataset is a compilation of all sampling sites of articles where ecological indices were used to assess the impact of different environmental stressors in aquatic environments from Argentina. Points of this dataset were extracted from 78 papers published between 1996 and 2018. We selected articles that use ecological indices to analyze some local environmental problematics or stressors. Using the type of index from each article we performed the kml file, which contained the categorized sampling sites by different symbols according to the ecological index: physico-chemical, biological, geomorphological and multimetric. We carried out a map (shapefile) with all the sampling sites referenced to the ecoregions of Argentina proposed by Burkart (1999).

Experimental plots studies comparing the impact of fertilization and wrack addition on invertebrate abundance and plant cover in Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico salt marshes from April 2009 to September 2010

Understanding the relative strengths of top-down and bottom-up forces is an important key to predicting the structure of biological communities. The strength of these effects can be regulated in part by predator abundance and nutrient availability. In 2009, we hypothesized that the importance of these factors varies geographically between the southeastern Atlantic Coast and the Gulf Coast due to differences in tidal regime, and began to study this variation using a biogeographic, manipulative field experiment. Although our original purpose was to understand the structure of salt marsh arthropod food webs, BP's Deepwater Horizon spill in the Gulf Coast presented an opportunity to understand how stress from an oil spill might affect the variables that we were measuring. The fact that we had plots and transect sampling in place at multiple sites along the Gulf and East Coasts put us in a position to evaluate any impacts that might occur if oil hit some of the sites. The study was conducted at 11 sites across the Gulf Coast, from Texas to Florida, and 11 sites along the Atlantic Coast, from Florida to Maine. At each site, experimental plots were sampled and a 100m transect was sampled near the plots within 5m of the high marsh boundary. Sampling was conducted in May 2009, August 2009, and August 2010. In 2010, four extra sites were added to the existing experimental sites because of known oil contamination, and another site was added as an extra control. Only the transect sampling was conducted at these sites. This dataset contains all the data from experimental plots; experimental treatments of fertilizer addition, wrack addition, fertilizer & wrack addition, and no addition (control) were randomly applied to the plots. The plot treatments were maintained in August 2009 and May 2010.

WES01 Woody encroachment impacts on the subsurface at Konza Prairie

Soil sampling pits across three hillslope positions - toeslope, backslope, and summit - were dug in 2020 in watershed N4D (burned every 4 years) and N1D (burned annually) to characterize the impacts of woody encroachment on subsurface soil physical, chemical, and biological properties. Pits were hand-dug to 120 cm in the toeslope position and to 60 cm deep at the backslope and summit positions. Soil pits in N4D were dug directly under dogwood shrubs (Cornus drumondii) while pits in N1B were dug under grasses and forbs. Soil pit faces were photographed to determine root fractions with depth, soil monoliths were take to charaterize soil macroporosity with depth while soil cores were taken in each horizon for water retention analysis. Soil sensors were also installed at four soil depths at the toeslope position and 3 soil depths at the backslope and summit positions to record half hourly soil moisture, soil temperature, soil water potential, soil electrical conductivity, and soil carbon dioxide, and soil oxygen. In addition, geophysical measurements were taken in N4D using time-lapse electrical resistivity in 2023.

ASS01 Suspended sediments in streams impacted by prescribed buring, grazing and woody vegetation removal at Konza Prairie

To determine effects of rotational burning and riparian vegetation removal on suspended solid concentrations in streams. Two sites are burned with a frequency of 2 (N02B) and 4 (N04D) years and grazed by bison. In 2011, N02B will have woody riparian vegetation removed along the entire stream length. The Shane Creek site (SHAN) is currently ungrazed and burned most years. In 2011 the treatment will be switched to grazing and burning of 1/3 of the watershed every year. The data include before and during-treatment sampling for both experiments.

Fishery impacts - CA commercial lobster catch and effort, and trap distribution around marine reserves

These data describe landings and fishing effort for the CA commercial spiny lobster fishery. Data are contained in two tables: 1) a time series collected by the California Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) of lobster catch (kg) and effort (lobster trap pulls) by year (1998-2020) and location (geographic fishery blocks). Catch is recorded and reported to CDFW by fish processors (buyers) with “fish tickets”. Trap pulls are recorded and reported by fishermen with logbooks. 2) The number of traps counted in the water at increasing distances from the boundary of marine reserves, three reserves located in the northern region of the fishery and three from the southern region of the fishery, in November 2022.

Data from: Dwarf shrubs impact tundra soils: drier, colder, and less organic carbon

In the tundra, woody plants are dispersing towards higher latitudes and altitudes due to increasingly favourable climatic conditions. The coverage and height of woody plants are increasing, which may influence the soils of the tundra ecosystem. Here, we use structural equation modelling to analyse 171 study plots and to examine if the coverage and height of woody plants affect the growing-season topsoil moisture and temperature (< 10 cm) as well as soil organic carbon stocks (< 80 cm). In our study setting, we consider the hierarchy of the ecosystem by controlling for other factors, such as topography, wintertime snow depth and the overall plant coverage that potentially influence woody plants and soil properties in this dwarf-shrub dominated landscape in northern Fennoscandia. We found strong links from topography to both vegetation and soil. Further, we found that woody plants influence multiple soil properties: the dominance of woody plants inversely correlated with soil moisture, soil temperature, and soil organic carbon stocks (standardised regression coefficients = -0.39; -0.22; -0.34, respectively), even when controlling for other landscape features. Our results indicate that the dominance of dwarf shrubs may lead to soils that are drier, colder, and contain less organic carbon. Thus, there are multiple mechanisms through which woody plants may influence tundra soils.

Kemppinen, Niittynen, Virkkala, Happonen, Riihimäki, Aalto & Luoto (2021). Extreme to phenomenal storm wave impacts on a steep rocky coast, north Mayo, Ireland: video data, image analysis, runup and flow velocity calculations for waves of storms Fionn and Gareth.

The primary data are video (.mp4) files of extreme storm wave impacts on the sites of high elevation (>=20m above high water mark) coastal boulder deposits, recorded during storms Fionn (16/01/2018) and Gareth (12/03/2019), at (54.320355, -9.569633) on the north Mayo coast of Ireland, while the significant wave height was in the range [11m,14m]. There are also .png and .jpg files derived from frames of some of the videos, relating to the analysis of the impacting wave kinematics (runup/landward propagation and flow velocities), together with physical measurements for scale determination and runup/velocity/measurement uncertainty calculations in Excel. The files EventX.mp4 are the primary data for the wave impacts EventX. The files EventX_Frame_Y.jpg are frames sampled from EventX.mp4 at constant time intervals in the temporal vicinity of the impact. The files EventX_Edges_Y.png are the edges derived from the frames with the Canny edge detector. The files EventX_Registration_Y.jpg are the impacting wavefront edges with topographical edges registered on the file ReferenceImage.jpg The files EventX.jpg are the stacked registrations for all Y, from which the impact kinematics are derived. The file Scale_Registration_Position_Velocity_Measurements_AndUncertainty.xlsx contains physical measurements for scale determination, measurements of registration error, and the calculations of impact runup/landward displacement and flow velocities, with their uncertainties. The files JetX_Leacht_a_Chúil.mp4/g are videos of large jet-producing impacts at another site.

The files DSCN0066.MP4-DSC0085.MP4 are the raw video observations of Storm Gareth, recorded from 15:35-18:41 UT on 12 March 2019 with a Nikon Coolpix W100, while the significant wave height increased from 12m to in excess of 14m (the timestamp of these videos in Properties->Details->Media Created is one hour later than the UT of creation, because the camera's clock was set to Irish Summer Time). The file GPO15366.MP4 is an example of the GoPro (Hero 5) videos recorded simultaneously.
