Conservation genetics of an island-endemic lizard: low Ne and the critical role of intermediate temperatures for genetic connectivity

Island populations are at higher risk of extinction than mainland populations. Therefore, understanding the factors that facilitate connectivity is particularly pressing for the conservation of island taxa. Sceloporus occidentalis becki, the Island Fence Lizard, is an endemic taxon restricted to the Northern Channel Islands, part of a nearshore archipelago in Southern California, USA. Since the Last Glacial Maximum, fence lizard habitat on the Northern Channel Islands has decreased with rising sea levels and increasing temperatures that have reduced the availability of woody vegetation. More recently, the introduction (and subsequent removal) of invasive ungulates over the last 170 years and recovery of vegetation has resulted in further dramatic habitat modification. Given the potential for genetic bottlenecks, the history of habitat alteration, and topographic and landscape complexity, we used landscape and population genetic approaches to characterize patterns of genetic diversity and structure of Island Fence Lizards on Santa Cruz Island, the largest of the Northern Channel Islands. Our analyses revealed shallow population structure across the island, low effective population size (Ne = ~200), and evidence for a recent genetic bottleneck. Landscape genetic analyses showed that connectivity is facilitated by tree canopy cover and shrubland, as well as by intermediate temperatures, emphasizing the importance of woody vegetation and habitats with variable thermal regimes as the climate warms. Combined, these population and landscape genetic analyses suggest that the Island Fence Lizard is of greater conservation concern than currently appreciated, and increased conservation management focus is warranted for this island endemic.

Evaluation of Materials for Low Temperature Asphalt Pavement Performance, BBR Field study

Asphalt mixtures were collected from seven construction projects, both of the plant and during laydown. One SGC cylindrical specimen or ‘puck’ of 80 mm thickness was prepared for each type of mixture. By doing so, 14 different SGC pucks were obtained. The pucks were labeled as ‘UT-01-P’ to ‘UT-07-P’ for plant mixtures and ‘UT-01-F’ to ‘UT-07-F’ for mixtures that were obtained during laydown in the field. Because of compacting to a specific height, the air voids of the compacted pucks varied from 3% to 6%.

In Lab A, the specimens were tested in the Bending Beam Rheometer (BBR) by following the AASHTO TP 125-16 testing procedure at three different temperatures: -12°C, -18°C, and -24°C. On the other hand, in Lab C, the specimens were tested at only one temperature (PG + 10°C). In average, 12 specimens were tested for each mixture at both of the laboratories.

Phanerozoic tectonic and sedimentation history of the Arctic: constraints from deep-time low-temperature thermochronology data of Ellesmere Island and Northwest Greenland

We present thermochronology and geochronology data from basement and (meta-)sedimentary samples collected on Ellesmere Island (Canadian High Arctic) and Northwest Greenland. The interpretations of our data are described and discussed in a paper in the journal Tectonics, titled “Phanerozoic tectonic and sedimentation history of the Arctic: constraints from deep-time low-temperature thermochronology data of Ellesmere Island and Northwest Greenland”. Our data include apatite fission track analyses, apatite (U-Th-Sm)/He analyses, and U-Pb analyses of detrital zircons. The data were used for inverse Monte Carlo simulations for obtaining time-temperature histories. We include descriptions of the analytical details related to the measurements, tests for potential effects of radiation damage on the (U-Th-Sm)/He age distributions, and we display the results of the Monte Carlo simulations for the individual samples. Our data set comprises a table summarizing constraints and specific parameters used for simulations (Table S1, summary input modelling), a table displaying the results of the simulations (Table S2, summary outcome thermal history inversions), a table displaying calculations of modelled overburden (Table S3, calculation of net burial and exhumation), a table summarizing the results of apatite fission track data, followed by several tables with the single-grain age and length data of fission track analyses (Table S4), a table with the detailed results of apatite (U-Th-Sm)/He thermochronology (Table S5), a table with single-grain zircon U-Pb data (Table S6), and a table with the results of statistical analysis for distinguishing individual age groups from the detrital zircon U-Pb age distributions (Table S7).

Experimental files for Investigation of low temperature plasmas formed in low density gases surrounding laser produced plasmas

Temporal and spectral investigation of plasmas produced by interaction of laser pulses, with gaseous mixtures, was performed. The interaction took place inside a small portion of dense gas mixture injected temporarily into a chamber filled with the same mixture under low pressure. High-temperature plasmas produced directly by the laser pulse were a source of soft x rays and charged particles, ionizing and exciting the surrounding gas. In this way, low-temperature plasmas were produced. The formation of low-temperature plasmas was studied using optical spectroscopy and streak imaging. The experimental data.zip file contains the experimental data from an optical spectrograph and optical streak camera.

Work supported by the National Science Centre, Poland, grant agreement no. 2020/39/B/ST2/00509

Stability of martian multi-component brines at low temperatures

The main folder contains four subfolders, and two text files: “GWB parameters”, which summarizes all the parameters in the Geochemist’s Workbench (GWB) React module that have been changed from their default value (for the purpose of reproducing our data). The second file “vincent_jan19_A-phiPoly” contains the thermodynamic data used for modelling at low temperatures. This file is only compatible with the latest version of GWB (version 15).

Each of the model folders (Model 1, Model 2, and Model 3) contains three subfolders. Each of these subfolders contain the output graphs obtained from Geochemist’s Workbench at each temperature step, along with the associated data text files. The first of these folders is Minerals vs Water Activity. It contains graphs of the precipitating minerals (mol) on the y-axis versus water activity on the x-axis. The second folder is Species Concentration vs Water Activity. This folder contains graphs of species (mmol/kg) on the y-axis versus water activity on the x-axis. The last of these three folders is Water Mass vs Water Activity. It contains graphs of water activity on the y-axis versus mass of water (g) on the x-axis. In addition to these three subfolders, each model folder contains a text file “Mineral Water Activity MX” (MX being the model number) with the water activity of at each precipitating mineral at each temperature. There is also an Excel file “Minerals Temp vs Water Activity M1” that contains tables and graphs of temperature vs water activity for each precipitant.

The last folder named “Figures” contains two additional Excel files used to construct the figures presented in the paper. One is called “Multibrine 2021 All Minerals on One Graph”, and contains a combined graph, for each model, of temperature vs water activity for all precipitants (Figure 1 in the paper). The other Excel file is called “Lowest Water Activity vs Temp”, and contains tables and a graph comparing the lowest recorded water activity value at each temperature with Phoenix Lander data (Figure 2 of the paper).
