Mapping soil microbial residence time at the global scale

<p>Soil microbes ultimately drive the mineralization of soil organic carbon and thus ecosystem functions. We compiled a dataset of the seasonality of microbial biomass carbon (MBC) and developed a semi-mechanistic model to map monthly MBC across the globe. MBC exhibits an equatorially symmetric seasonality between the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. In the Northern Hemisphere, MBC peaks in autumn and is minimal in spring at low latitudes (&lt;25° N), peaks in the spring and is minimal in autumn at mid-latitudes (25°-50° N), while peaks in autumn and is minimal in spring at high latitudes (&gt;50° N). This latitudinal shift of MBC seasonality is attributed to an interaction of soil temperature, soil moisture, and substrate availability. The MBC seasonality is inconsistent with patterns of heterotrophic respiration, indicating that MBC as a proxy for microbial activity is inappropriate at this resolution. This study highlights the need to explicitly represent microbial physiology in microbial models. The interactive controls of environments and substrate on microbial seasonality provide insights for better representing microbial mechanisms in simulating ecosystem functions at the seasonal scale.</p>

Constraining Bedrock Groundwater Residence Times in a Mountain System with Environmental Tracer Observations and Bayesian Uncertainty Quantification: Modeling and Data Package

<p>Here we present field observations of dissolved noble gases (He, Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe), Chloroflourcarbons (CFCs), Sulfurhexaflouride (SF6), and tritium (3H) sampled from the PLM1, PLM6, and PLM7 wells in the East River Colorado (USA) sampled&nbsp;in May, 2021. This observation dataset, along with the presented python modeling scripts to interpret the data, can aide in quantifying groundwater residence times and recharge conditions. The README files describes the directories and scripts.</p>

Data for: Movements and residency of fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus) in the California Current System

<p>This dataset represents the sighting histories of 932 individual fin whales (<em>Balaentoptera physalus</em>) photographed along the west coast of the continental United States and northern Mexico, 1987–2018. Because the fin whale is an endangered species, the sighting locations have been generalized. The full resolution sighting location data files and the R code used to conduct the analyses for the associated manuscript may be requested from the authors.</p>

Mercury isotope clocks predict coastal residency and migration timing of hammerhead sharks

<p>1. The management of migratory taxa relies on the knowledge of their movements. Among them, ontogenetic habitat shift, from nurseries to adult habitats, is a behavioral trait shared across marine taxa allowing resource partitioning between life stages and reducing predation risk. As this movement is consistent over time, characterizing its timing is critical to implement efficient management plans, notably in coastal areas to mitigate the impact of fisheries on juvenile stocks.</p> <p>2. In the Mexican Pacific, habitat use of the smooth hammerhead shark (<em>Sphyrna zygaena</em>) is poorly described, while the species is heavily harvested. Given the large uncertainties associated with the timing of out-migration from coastal nursery grounds to offshore waters prior to reproductive maturity, a more precise assessment of smooth hammerhead shark movements is needed. </p> <p>3. Photochemical degradation of mercury imparts mass-independent isotope fractionation (Δ<sup>199</sup>Hg) which can be used to discriminate between neonate coastal shallow habitats and the offshore deep foraging patterns of late juveniles. Here, we present the application of muscle Δ<sup>199</sup>Hg as molecular clocks to predict the timing of ontogenetic habitat shifts by smooth hammerhead sharks, based on their isotopic compositions at the initial and arrival habitats and on muscle isotopic turnover rate.</p> <p>4. We observed decreases in Δ<sup>199</sup>Hg values with shark body length, reflecting increasing reliance on offshore mesopelagic prey with age. Coastal residency estimates indicated that smooth hammerhead sharks utilize coastal resources for two years prior to offshore migration, suggesting a prolonged residency in these ecosystems.</p> <p>Policy implications: This study demonstrates how mercury stable isotopes and isotopic clocks can be implemented as a complementary tool for stock management by predicting the timing of animal migration—a key aspect in the conservation of marine taxa. In the Mexican Pacific, fishing pressure on shark species occurs in coastal habitats depleting juvenile stocks. Consequently, management decision support tools are imperative for effectively maintaining early life stage population levels over time. The finding that smooth hammerhead sharks extensively rely on highly fished habitats for two years after parturition supports the relevance of establishing a size limit in coastal fisheries and demonstrates how the current temporal shark fishing closure could lack efficiency for the species.</p>

Residents perspectives on human-wildlife conflict management to build community resilience in Chitwan National Park, Nepal

<ol> <li>Human-wildlife conflict can significantly impact economic, social, and ecological systems critical to promoting sustainable development. Effectively managing conflicts between people and wildlife that share a common landscape requires the implementation of effective management strategies that aim to reduce the impacts of HWC and promote coexistence as preferred by the community. However, many studies have often overlooked social aspects, especially the residents' perceptions of HWC management, that can help build community resilience.</li> <li>Residents and wildlife share a common landscape in the Chitwan National Park in Nepal. Competition for resources grows as the human-modified landscape provides a new form of habitat for wildlife. We used Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) to capture the residents' (n=506) perspectives on the importance of HWC management strategies and their performance by park management to prioritize strategies that could help build community resilience.</li> <li>We found notable mean performance-importance gaps for the eight HWC management strategies, representing the park management's inability to meet the desired need of  farmers and non-farmers. The IPA matrix grid shows the three strategies - skill, livelihood, and compensation - that need immediate attention from park management as they fall under high-priority strategies in quadrant II. The two-way ANOVA results revealed that the residents' perspectives on importance and performance in all management sectors differ.</li> <li>We conclusively recommend developing site-and context-specific HWC management plans that consider the affected community's livelihood needs, which are essential for increasing the operational effectiveness of HWC management. Park management should prioritize strategies in sectors more vulnerable to HWCs to secure community support for long-term conservation goals.</li> <li>This study will be a key reference for identifying context-specific management strategies that incorporate community resilience in the management of human-wildlife conflict. This could inform HWC management policy and conservation planning to achieve coexistence that benefits both people and wildlife, particularly in low-income countries with similar socio-ecological settings. Overall, our findings provide a new perspective on human-wildlife conflict management that policymakers, researchers, and protected area managers around the world can use to build community resilience to facilitate coexistence.</li> </ol>

Molecular epidemiology and risk factors for extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Enterobacterales in long-term care residents

<div class="abstract-content selected"> <p><strong class="sub-title"> Objectives: </strong> We aimed to assess the burden of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacterales in Swiss long-term care facilities (LTCFs) to describe the molecular epidemiology, describe the intra-institutional and regional clusters of resistant pathogens, and identify independent institution- and resident-level factors associated with colonization.</p> <p><strong class="sub-title"> Design: </strong> Cross-sectional study.</p> <p><strong class="sub-title"> Setting and participants: </strong> From August to October 2019, we performed a point prevalence study among residents from 16 LTCFs in Western and Eastern Switzerland (8 per region).</p> <p><strong class="sub-title"> Methods: </strong> Residents underwent screening for ESBL-producing Enterobacterales (ESBL-E); whole-genome sequencing (WGS) was performed. We gathered institution-level (eg, number of beds, staff-resident ratio, alcoholic hand rub consumption) and resident-level [eg, anthropometric data, time in facility, dependency, health care exposure, antibiotic treatment, proton-pump inhibitor (PPI) use] characteristics. Factors associated with colonization were identified using a generalized linear model.</p> <p><strong class="sub-title"> Results: </strong> Among 1185 eligible residents, 606 (51%) consented to the study. ESBL-E prevalence was 11.6% (70/606), ranging from 1.9% to 33.3% between institutions, with a median of 12.5% in the West and 6.9% in the East (P = .03). Among 59 <em>Escherichia</em> <em>coli</em> (from 58 residents), multilocus sequence type (ST) 131 was most common (n = 43/59, 73%), predominantly its subclone H30R1 (n = 37/43, 86%). WGS data identified multiple intra-institutional and regional clusters. Independent risk factors for ESBL carriage were previous ESBL colonization [adjusted odds ratio (aOR) 23.5, 95% confidence interval (CI) 6.6–83.8, P &lt; .001), male gender (aOR 2.6, 95% CI 1.5–4.6, P = .002), and use of PPIs (aOR 2.2, 95% CI 1.2–3.8, P = .01).</p> <p><strong class="sub-title"> Conclusions and implications: </strong> Overall ESBL-E prevalence in Swiss LTCF residents is low. Yet, we identified several clusters of residents with identical pathogens within the same institution. This implies that particularly affected institutions might benefit from targeted infection control interventions. PPI use was the only modifiable factor associated with carriage of ESBL producers. This study adds to the growing list of adverse outcomes associated with PPIs, calling for action to restrict their use in the long-term care setting.</p> </div>

Climatic forcing and individual heterogeneity in a resident mountain bird: legacy data reveal effects on reproductive strategies

<p><span>Optimization of clutch size and timing of reproduction </span><span>have substantial effects on lifetime reproductive success in vertebrates, and b</span><span>oth </span><span>individual quality and </span><span>environmental variation may impact </span><span>life history strategies</span><span>. </span><span>We tested hypotheses related to maternal investment and timing of reproduction</span><span>, using 17 years (1978-1994) of individual-based life history data on willow ptarmigan (<em>Lagopus l. lagopus</em>, </span><span>n=290 breeding females with n=319 breeding attempts</span><span>) in central Norway. We analysed whether climatic variation and individual state variables (age and body mass) affected number of offspring and timing of reproduction, and individual repeatability in strategies</span><span>. The results suggest that willow ptarmigan share a common optimal clutch size that is largely independent of measured individual states. While we found no clear direct weather effects on clutch size, higher spring temperatures advanced onset of breeding, and early breeding was followed by an increased number of offspring. Warmer springs were positively related to maternal mass, and mass interacted with clutch size in production of hatchlings. Finally, clutch size and timing of reproduction were highly repeatable within individuals, indicating that individual quality guided trade-offs in reproductive effort. Our results demonstrate how climatic forcing and individual heterogeneity in combination influenced life history traits in a resident montane keystone species.</span></p>

Complex relationships between climate and reproduction in a resident montane bird

<p>Animals use climate-related environmental cues to fine-tune breeding timing and investment to match peak food availability. In birds, spring temperature is a commonly documented cue used to initiate breeding, but with global climate change, organisms are experiencing both directional changes in ambient temperatures and extreme year-to-year precipitation fluctuations. Montane environments exhibit complex climate patterns where temperatures and precipitation change along elevational gradients, and where exacerbated annual variation in precipitation has resulted in extreme swings between heavy snow and drought. We used 10 years of data to investigate how annual variation in climatic conditions is associated with differences in breeding phenology and reproductive performance in resident mountain chickadees (<em>Poecile gambeli</em>) at two elevations in the northern Sierra Nevada mountains, USA. Variation in spring temperature was not associated with differences in breeding phenology across elevations in our system. Greater snow accumulation was associated with later breeding initiation at high, but not low, elevation. Brood size was reduced under drought, but only at low elevation. Our data suggest complex relationships between climate and avian reproduction and point to fall climate as important for reproductive performance, likely via its effect on phenology and abundance of invertebrates.</p>

Kupffer cell-like syncytia replenish resident macrophage function in fibrotic liver

<p class="AbstractSummary"><span>Kupffer cells (KCs) are localized in liver sinusoids but extend pseudopods to parenchymal cells to maintain their identity and serve as the body's central bacterial filter. Liver cirrhosis dramatically alters vascular architecture, but how KCs adapt is unclear. We used a mouse model of liver fibrosis and human tissue to examine immune adaptation. Fibrosis forced KCs to lose contact with parenchymal cells, downregulating "KC identity", which rendered them incapable of clearing bacteria. Commensals stimulated the recruitment of monocytes via CD44 to a spatially distinct vascular compartment. There, they formed large aggregates of multinucleated cells (syncytia) that expressed phenotypical KC markers and displayed enhanced bacterial catching ability. Syncytia formed via CD36 and were observed in human cirrhosis as a possible antimicrobial defense that evolved with fibrosis.</span></p>

Pediatric standardized residency training faculty's perceptions of medical education research

<p><strong>Background:</strong> Rigorous medical education research (MER) conducted by faculty in pediatric standardized residency training (SRT) can contribute to the promotion of child health care.  </p> <p><strong>Aim:</strong> This study aimed to assess the perceptions of pediatric SRT faculty regarding MER in Guangdong Province, China.     </p> <p><strong>Methods:</strong> A questionnaire survey was conducted involving 40 pediatric SRT clinical teachers from 10 hospitals in Guangdong Province.</p> <p><strong>Results:</strong> Among the 40 teachers, 16 (40.00%) stated that they did not participate any MER activities. The main challenges they encountered in conducting MER were the lack of training (72.50%), limited time (80.00%), and lack of grants funding (60.00%). Only 10 (25.00%)teachers were reported to have received grants for MER projects.   </p> <p><strong>Conclusion: </strong>The findings highlight the importance of providing support and training to pediatric SRT faculty in Guangdong Province, China, to enhance their engagement in MER. Addressing these challenges can lead to significant improvements in child heal care promotion through evidence-based educational practices. </p>
