Chang'e 5 RF recording at 8463.7 MHz with Allen Telescope Array during LOI-2

This dataset contains a recording of X-band telemetry signals from the Chinese lunar sample retrieve mission Chang'e 5 done on 2020-11-29 before and during the LOI-2 (lunar orbit injection 2) manoeuvre that circularized the spacecraft's elliptical lunar orbit. The recording was done at Allen Telescope Array using antenna 1h in dual XY (linear) polarization.

The hardware configuration was as follows: antennas 1h was connected to RFCB LO d, which was tuned to a frequency of 8475 MHz and used an output IF of 512 MHz. A USRP N321 was connected to the IF output of the RFCB and digitized both polarizations. The USRP used external 10 MHz reference and PPS coming from the observatory distribution system. The IQ sample rate of the USRP was 30.72 Msps and a GNU Radio flowgraph was used to channelize four frequencies from the spacecraft (8463.7, 8471.2, 8478.6 and 8486.2 MHz), using an IQ sample rate of 240 ksps for each channel.

The GNU Radio flowgraph stored the IQ data for each channel as 32-bit floats in the GNU Radio metatata file format, with detached headers. After recording, the data was converted to SigMF format.

This dataset contains the IQ data for the channel at 8463.7 MHz, which corresponds to the lander, in SigMF format. Each polarization is in a different file. The original metadata headers are also provided.

Note: during the observation, the frequency of the RFCB LO was lowered by exactly 30 kHz in two occasions to prevent the signals from drifting out of the channel passband due to Doppler. The two LO jumps can be easily seen in the residual carrier of the signals and corrected.

Recording of JUICE with the Allen Telescope Array on 2023-04-15 (antenna 5c)

This dataset contains an IQ recording of the X-band 8436 MHz telemetry signal from JUICE (Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer). The recording was done on 2023-04-15, the day after launch. Antennas 1a and 5c from the Allen Telescope Array were used in dual XY (linear) polarization.

The hardware configuration was as follows: the antenna was connected to RFCB LO d, which was tuned to a frequency of 8436 MHz and used an output IF of 512 MHz. A USRP N321 and USRP N320 were connected to the IF output of the RFCB. The N321 digitized both polarizations of antenna 1a, and the N320 digitized both polarizations antenna 5c. The USRPs used an external 10 MHz reference and PPS coming from the observatory distribution system, and LO sharing was set up among the four channels. The IQ sample rate of the USRP was 6.144 Msps and a GNU Radio flowgraph was used to record IQ data to disk. The GNU Radio flowgraph stored the IQ data for each channel as 16-bin integers in the GNU Radio metatata file format, with detached headers.

After recording, the data was postprocessed to synthesize the signal polarization (which is expected to be RHCP) by finding and correcting the amplitude and phase offset between the X and Y channels, and adding coherently both channels. The data was downsampled to 2.048 Msps and converted to 8-bit to reduce the size of the dataset. Finally, the dataset was formatted using SigMF.

This dataset contains the recording for antenna 5c. The recording for antenna 1a can be found here.

DeepSpaceYoloDataset: an annotated set of smart telescopes images

During the MILAN research project (MachIne Learning for AstroNomy), we have compiled a large collection of deep sky images during Electronically Assisted Astronomy sessions in Luxembourg, France, Belgium.

We have used two instruments for several months (from March 2022 to September 2023): a Stellina smart telescope (https://vaonis.com/stellina) and a Vespera smart telescope (https://vaonis.com/vespera).
We have captured data for a representative set of deep sky objects from the Messier / NGC / IC / Sharpless2 / Barnard catalogues.
Different types of celestial objects were considered: emission/reflection/dark/planetary nebula, galaxies, globular/open clusters.
Images were obtained after the capture and the stacking of sub-frames of 10 seconds exposure time.
Training images were splitted into 608x608 patches.
Based on the YOLOv7 format, the dataset is a ZIP file containing 4696 RGB images, and the corresponding 4696 labels text files with the positions of deep sky objets in the images.

This research was funded by the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR), grant reference 15872557.

More information about the MILAN project: https://www.fnr.lu/results-2021-1-bridges-call/.

More information about VAONIS instruments: https://vaonis.com

More information about Luxembourg of Science and Technology (LIST): https://www.list.lu

Data license for files: Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International
