Public parks and the pandemic: how park usage has been affected by COVID-19 policies
<p>Public parks serve an important societal function as recreational spaces for diverse communities of people, with well documented physical and mental health benefits. As such, parks may be crucial for how people have handled effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly the increasingly limited recreational opportunities, widespread financial uncertainty, and consequent heightened anxiety. Despite the documented benefits of parks, however, many states have instituted park shutdown orders due to fears that public parks could facilitate SARS-CoV-2 transmission. Here we use geotagged social media data from state, county, and local parks throughout New Jersey to examine whether park visitation increased when the COVID-19 pandemic began and whether park shutdown orders were effective at deterring park usage. We compare park usage during four discrete stages of spring 2020: (1) before the pandemic began, (2) during the beginning of the pandemic, (3) during the New Jersey governor's state-wide park shutdown order, and (4) following the lifting of the shutdown. We find that park visitation increased by 63.4% with the onset of the pandemic. The subsequent park shutdown order caused visitation in closed parks to decline by 76.1% while parks that remained open continued to experience elevated visitation levels. Visitation then returned to elevated pre-shutdown levels when closed parks were allowed to reopen. Altogether, our results indicate that parks continue to provide crucial services to society, particularly in stressful times when opportunities for recreation are limited. Furthermore, our results suggest that policies targeting human behavior can be effective and are largely reversible. As such, we should continue to invest in public parks and to explore the role of parks in managing public health and psychological well-being.</p>

Neutrophil-mediated oxidative stress and albumin structural damage predict COVID-19-associated mortality
<p>This work reports that COVID-19-induced oxidative stress inflicts structural damages to human serum albumin (HSA) and is linked with mortality outcome in critically ill patients. Analyzing blood samples from patients and healthy individuals, the paper provides evidence that neutrophils are major sources of oxidative stress in blood and that hydrogen peroxide is highly accumulated in plasmas of non-survivors. The electron paramagnetic resonance spectra of spin-labeled fatty acids (SLFAs) bound with HSA in whole blood of control, survivor, and non-survivor subjects (n=10–11) were analyzed to probe structural damages to the protein. Non-survivors' HSA showed dramatically altered biophysical parameters that reflect remarkably fluid protein microenvironments. Following loading/unloading of 16-DSA, the results show that the transport function of HSA may be impaired in severe patients. Stratified at the means, Kaplan–Meier survival analysis indicated that lower values of S/W ratio and accumulated H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub> in plasma significantly predicted in-hospital mortality.</p>

Exposure to the Covid-19 pandemic and generosity in Spain
<p>We report data from an online experiment, which allow us to study how generosity has changed during the initial explosive growth of the Covid-19 pandemic in Spain. We have gathered data from over a six-day period in which Covid-19-associated deaths in Spain, one of the most affected countries in the corresponding period, increased fourfold. In our experiment, participants could donate a fraction of a €100 prize to a charity. Our data are particularly rich in the age distribution and we complement them with daily public information about the Covid-19-related deaths, infections, and hospital admissions. We find correlational evidence that donations decreased in the period under study and scale down with the public information about the life and health impact of the pandemic. The effect is particularly pronounced among older subjects. Our analysis of the mechanisms behind the detected decrease in solidarity suggests that subjects' expectations about others' behavior, perceived mortality risk, and (alarming) information in behavioral adaptation play a key—but independent—role.</p>

<p>Cette base de données est issue d’une enquête quantitative par questionnaire (nombre d’observations = 415, période : mars 2021). Elle est construite sur la base de la théorie du comportement planifié. La variable finale que le modèle cherche à expliquer (la variable dépendante) est l’intention d’abandonner ses études chez les étudiants. </p> <p>L’objectif premier est de mesurer (via des statistiques descriptives) et de comprendre (via des statistiques explicatives) les facteurs qui conduisent des étudiants à envisager d’abandonner leurs études ; et donc à pouvoir comprendre comment agir pour limiter cet abandon. L’objectif second réside a) dans la prise en compte de l’impact d’un contexte (la pandémie du Covid-19) dans la théorie et b) dans la confirmation de la place de l’identité personnelle en tant que mesure alternative de l’intention comportementale (et non en tant que variable explicative de cette intention).</p>

<p><b>Background:</b> The emergence of the COVID-19 epidemic threw the world into turmoil. The medical community bore the brunt of the pandemic's toll. It became clear that there was a shortage of medical personnel and resources. Long work hours, and a lack of personal protective equipment (PPE) and social support all had an influence on mental health.</p> <p><b>Methods: </b>This cross-sectional study was conducted among Lumbini Medical College Teaching Hospital students and employees in Palpa, Nepal. Data entailing their demographic details, pre-existing comorbidities, or death in the family due to COVID-19 was collected using a self-administered survey. In addition, the level of fear, anxiety, obsession, and functional impairment due to COVID-19 was recorded using previously validated respective scales.</p> <p><b>Results:</b> In total, 403 health care workers and trainees participated in our study. The average age of the study participants was 23±4 years, and more than half of them (n=262, 65%) were females. A significant association was found between fear score with age (p=0.04), gender (p-value <0.01) and occupation (p-value<0.001). Participants suffering from chronic diseases (p-value=0.36), and those who had experienced a COVID-19 death in the family (p-value=0.18), were not found to be significantly obsessed with COVID-19. However, for those who had experienced a COVID-19 death in the family (p-value=0.51) and age (p-value=0.34), these factors were not found to be significantly associated with higher anxiety levels. Nursing students suffered from a significantly greater functional impairment than people of other medical professionals (mean score=269.15, p-value < 0.001). A moderately positive correlation was observed between fear, anxiety, obsession, and functional impairment scales.</p> <p><b>Conclusion:</b> Unpredictability and uncertainty are considerable in the aftermath of the pandemic. People's psychological well-being deteriorates due to the repercussions of developing a severe sickness, being isolated, and confronting the stigma of being infected. With the health care personnel at the front lines, the stakes are considerably higher for them. This study revealed various socio-demographic characteristics as risk factors for psychological stress in the healthcare personnel of Nepal during the COVID-19 pandemic. A viable answer to this quandary might be adequate psychosocial intervention by health care authorities, increased social support, and the introduction of better mental health management measures for healthcare personnel.</p>
Impact of COVID-19 on international medical education
<p>Purpose: To assess the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on the current study methods and future plans of medical students compared to those in the pre-pandemic period.</p> <p>Materials and methods: Second-grade medical students reported their academic experiences, study methods, and future career plans before (between 2016 and 2019) and during the pandemic (2020) using a questionnaire-based survey at Hokkaido University, Japan (n = 534).</p> <p>Results: From 2016 to 2019, we found an increasing trend for participation in short-term international exchange programs, taking the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE), clinical training, and undertaking research abroad among the students. However, these percentages significantly declined (35.5%) during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 for all the assessed future plans, including short-term exchange programs (-27.9%), taking USMLE (-19.8%), clinical training (-24.5%), and undertaking research abroad (-13.2%) compared to 2019, wherein 67.9% of the students wished to have at least one of these four above-mentioned academic activities.</p> <p>Conclusions: The COVID-19 pandemic adversely and significantly influenced our medical students plans to go abroad for clinical and research training. Future studies are warranted to assess the long-term influence of this pandemic on the career planning of medical students.</p>
