Data from: Predicting local adaptation in fragmented plant populations: implications for restoration genetics

Understanding patterns and correlates of local adaptation in heterogeneous landscapes can provide important information in the selection of appropriate seed sources for restoration. We assessed the extent of local adaptation of fitness components in 12 population pairs of the perennial herb Rutidosis leptorrhynchoides (Asteraceae) and examined if spatial scale (0.7 – 600km), environmental distance, quantitative Q_ST and neutral genetic differentiation F_ST, and size of the local and foreign populations could predict patterns of adaptive differentiation. Local adaptation varied among populations and fitness components. Including all population pairs, local adaptation was observed for seedling survival, but not for biomass, while foreign genotype advantage was observed for reproduction (number of inflorescences). Among population pairs, local adaptation increased with Q_ST and local population size for biomass. Q_ST was associated with environmental distance, suggesting ecological selection for phenotypic divergence. However, low F_ST and variation in population structure in small populations demonstrates the interaction of gene flow and drift in constraining local adaptation in R. leptorrhynchoides. Our study indicates that for species in heterogeneous landscapes, collecting seed from large populations from similar environments to candidate sites is likely to provide the most appropriate seed sources for restoration.

Optimizing Forest Restoration: a holistic spatial approach to deliver Nature's Contributions to People with minimal trade-offs and maximal equity

<p>The datasets in this repository are the results of the study titled "Optimizing Forest Restoration: a holistic spatial approach to deliver Nature's Contributions to People (NCP) with minimal trade-offs and maximal equity". The study shows that forest restoration plans aimed at joint achievement of multiple NCP have minimal trade-offs between the NCP, optimize areas evenly across the potential restoration area considered and have maximal equity considering socioeconomically disadvantaged people in India, when compared to single NCP forest restoration plans. There are 3 NCP considered- climate change mitigation (MtC), biodiversity value NCP (number of forest depenend mamm species of 56 forest mammals considered, who restoration area target will be met)) and people NCP (number of people to whom livelihoods, energy and housing contruction material will be delivered). Single NCP forest restoration plans aim at only one of the three NCP considered at a time while the integrated plan is aimed at joint achievement of all three NCP. The peer-reviewed publication will be linked here after the peer-review process.&nbsp;<br><br>There are 5 datasets in this repository. The first titled opportunearea_10km_resample.tif is the potential forest restoration area considered in this study. The pixel values indicate the amount of potential forest restoration area within that pixel in sqm. The remaining 4 datasets are zipped files indicating each of the forest restoration plans considered. In each zipped file there are 100 raster files (.tif format). Each of the rasters provide the forest restoration area (first dataset) optimized for the respective type of forest restoration plan in 1% increments of the total potential restoration area. The naming format followed for each of these rasters is Y_NCPtype_optimality.tif, where Y is 1-100 and NCPType is either Biodiveristy, People, Carbon or Integrated. The pixel values in each of the rasters have a range of 0-1, where 0 means that restoration area (pixel) is not optimized for delivery of the respective NCP for that increment of total potential restoration area and 1 means the entire restoration area (pixel) has been optimized for delivery of the respective NCP. Proportional pixel values indicate that the respective proportion of the restoration area is optimal.&nbsp;<br><br>All rasters have pixel dimensions of 10 km x 10k (333, 325, 1 (nrow, ncol, nlyr)) with raster extent 7590450, 10840450, 902100, 4232100 (xmin, xmax, ymin, ymax) and WGS 1984 Psuedo Mercator (EPSG: 3857) coordinate reference system.</p>

Can prescribed fires restore C4 grasslands invaded by a C3 woody species and a co-dominant C3 grass species?

<p>Prescribed fire is used to reduce woody plant invasion and restore herbaceous production and diversity in grasslands and savannas worldwide. Here we determined if a concentrated series of repeated-winter, repeated-summer, or alternate-season (winter and summer) fires in a short timeframe ("transition fires") could catalyze the restoration of C<sub>4</sub> perennial grasses in Southern Great Plains, USA grasslands that had become dominated by a fire-tolerant C<sub>3</sub> woody N<sub>2</sub>-fixer (honey mesquite, <i>Prosopis glandulosa</i>) and a C<sub>3</sub> perennial bunchgrass (Texas wintergrass, <i>Nassella leucotricha</i>). We applied transition fires over a 5-year span, and maintenance fires on a portion of each plot 7 or 8 years later. We measured herbaceous standing biomass and cover and soil variables (soil organic C, N, δ<sup>13</sup>C and δ<sup>15</sup>N) in unburned, transition-burned and maintenance-burned treatments. Greater δ<sup>13</sup>C at 10-20 (-17 ‰) than 0-10 (-20 ‰) cm depth increment confirmed that vegetation was historically mostly C<sub>4</sub> grassland that shifted towards C<sub>3</sub> dominance. Transition treatments with summer fire were most effective at top-killing mesquite, but no treatments root-killed &gt;3%. Regrowth of top-killed mesquite was similar in all treatments and reached pre-fire height by 9 to 10 years post-fire. Herbaceous production and cover responses showed that: (1) alternate-season transition fires increased C<sub>4</sub> mid-grass, but did not change Texas wintergrass, (2) repeated-summer fires reduced Texas wintergrass, but did not change C<sub>4</sub> mid-grass, and (3) repeated-winter fires did not change C<sub>4</sub> mid-grass or Texas wintergrass compared to the unburned control. All maintenance fires stimulated Texas wintergrass biomass and cover, thus eliminating the reduction of Texas wintergrass caused by repeated-summer transition fires. There were no long-term effects of transition fires on soil C, N, δ<sup>13</sup>C or δ<sup>15</sup>N. Results advance our understanding of the expectations and limitations of prescribed fire in shifting a woodland alternate state toward what was historically a fire supported C<sub>4</sub> grassland/savanna.</p>

Socio-ecological drivers of public conservation voting: restoring gray wolves to Colorado, USA

<p>Understanding factors that influence real-world public conservation behaviors is critical for developing successful conservation policies and management actions. Citizens of Colorado, USA recently passed a ballot initiative to restore the gray wolf to its former range within the state. The &gt;3 million votes offer an unprecedented opportunity to test factors that influenced decisions to support or oppose this conservation action. We created spatial linear regression models to assess the relationship between support for wolf restoration and 1) the presidential vote, 2) distance to conservation intervention (i.e., proposed wolf reintroduction and existing wolves), and measures of 3) livelihood and 4) demographics using precinct-level data. Our results demonstrate the strong relationship between support for wolf restoration and political support for the Democratic candidate for president in the 2020 election, and highlights how other factors, including increased age, participation in elk hunting, and proximity to the reintroduction region were associated with less support. Our findings underscore the critical role of politicization on public conservation action and the need to develop outreach and engagement strategies to mitigate polarization.</p>

Data from: The sound of recovery: coral reef restoration success is detectable in the soundscape

<p><span>1. Pantropical degradation of coral reefs is prompting considerable investment in their active restoration. However, current measures of restoration success are based largely on coral cover, which does not fully reflect ecosystem function or reef health. </span></p> <p><span>2. Soundscapes are an important aspect of reef health; loud and diverse soundscapes guide the recruitment of reef organisms, but this process is compromised when degradation denudes soundscapes. As such, acoustic recovery is a functionally important component of ecosystem recovery. </span></p> <p><span>3. Here, we use acoustic recordings taken at one of the world's largest coral reef restoration projects to test whether successful restoration of benthic and fish communities is accompanied by a restored soundscape. We analyse recordings taken simultaneously on healthy, degraded (extensive historic blast fishing) and restored reefs (restoration carried out for 1–3 years on previously-degraded reefs). We compare soundscapes using manual counts of biotic sounds (phonic richness), and two commonly used computational analyses (acoustic complexity index [ACI] and sound-pressure level [SPL]).</span></p> <p><span>4. Healthy and restored reef soundscapes exhibited a similar diversity of biotic sounds (phonic richness), which was significantly higher than degraded reef soundscapes. This pattern was replicated in some automated analyses but not others; the ACI exhibited the same qualitative result as phonic richness in a low-frequency, but not a high-frequency bandwidth, and there was no significant difference between SPL values in either frequency bandwidth. Further, the low-frequency ACI and phonic richness scores were only weakly correlated despite showing a qualitatively equivalent overall result, suggesting that these metrics are likely to be driven by different aspects of the reef soundscape. </span></p> <p><span>5<i>. Synthesis and applications: </i>These data show that coral restoration can lead to soundscape recovery, demonstrating the return of an important ecosystem function. They also suggest that passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) might provide functionally important measures of ecosystem-level recovery – but only some PAM metrics reflect ecological status, and those that did are likely to be driven by different communities of soniferous animals. Recording soundscapes represents a potentially valuable tool for evaluating restoration success across ecosystems, but caution must be exercised when choosing metrics and interpreting results. </span></p>

Assessment of biogeographic variation in traits of Lewis flax (Linum lewisii) for use in restoration and agriculture

<p>Lewis flax (<i>Linum lewisii)</i> is widely distributed across western North America and is currently used in native ecosystem restoration. There is also growing interest in <i>de novo</i> domestication of Lewis flax as a perennial oilseed crop. To better understand this species and facilitate both restoration and domestication, we used common gardens to assess bio-geographical variation in a variety of seed and growth traits from 37 flax accessions, consisting of 35 wild populations from the Intermountain West region, the pre-variety germplasm Maple Grove (<i>L. </i><i>lewisii</i>) and the cultivar 'Appar' (<i>L. perenne</i>) and related this variation to collection site geography and climate. Results from linear mixed models suggest there is extensive phenotypic variation among populations of Lewis flax within the Intermountain West. Using a multivariate approach, we identify a key suite of traits that are related to latitude and climate and may facilitate adaptation, including flowering indeterminacy, seed mass, and stem number. These traits should be taken into account when considering the release of new germplasm for restoration efforts. We also find that Lewis flax seed contains desirably high amounts of <span>alpha</span>-linolenic acid and is otherwise mostly indistinguishable in fatty acid composition from oil-type varieties of domesticated flax (<i>L. usitatissimum</i>), making it a strong candidate for domestication. This study provides fundamental knowledge for future research into the ecology and evolution of Lewis flax, which will inform its use in both restoration and agriculture.</p>
