Functional segregation of the human cerebellum in social cognitive tasks revealed by TMS
<p><strong>Introduction</strong>. This database includes the raw data linked with the paper “Functional segregation of the human cerebellum in social cognitive tasks revealed by TMS”. In this paper, we reported healthy participants’ mean accuracy rates and reaction times (RTs) during an emotion discrimination task (Experiment 1 and Experiment 2), an evaluation of situated emotion task (Experiment 3) and emotion recognition task (Experiment 4). The present study aimed at investigating the contribution of different regions of the (posterior) cerebellum to the comprehension of others’ emotions.</p> <p><strong>Methods</strong>. In four experiments, we used Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) to interfere with the activity of two posterior cerebellar sectors, namely a paravermal and lateral cerebellar regions (and over the vertex as control site), while healthy participants performed an emotion discrimination task (N=24, Experiment 1; N=22, Experiment 2), an evaluation of situated emotion task (N=27, Experiment 3) and an emotion recognition task (N=20, Experiment 4).</p> <p><strong>Results (in brief).</strong> Our data showed that interfering via TMS with the activity of the medial posterior cerebellum affected basic emotion recognition in a two-alternative force-choice task, although this effect was restricted to negative stimuli (i.e., classification of fearful faces and scenarios). In turn, TMS over both the medial and lateral posterior cerebellum affected performance in a same-different discrimination task, requiring indicating whether two faces expressed the same or a different (ambiguous) emotion (anger/happiness or fear/happiness). Finally, only TMS over the lateral posterior cerebellum affected performance in a task requiring a higher-level social inference and in which participants had to recognize an (ambiguous) facial emotion as expressing happiness or fear considering the context in which it was experienced, with this effect being again only evident for fearful faces.</p> <p> </p>
Cognitive function in DMD carriers: personal case series and literature review
<p>Introduction: This database includes the raw data linked with the paper “Cognitive function in DMD carriers: personal case series and literature review” published on “Acta Myologica”. Aim: This study aimed to investigate the cognitive involvement in a cohort of DMD carriers.</p> <p>Methods: Our case series consisted of 22 carrier patients from two different centers (IRCCS Mondino, Pa- via and Policlinico Gemelli, Rome), for whom we retrospectively collected cognitive, clinical and genetic data.</p> <p>Results: We found that the average IQ of DMD carriers was lower (74; very low) than the average score on normal curve (100 as average standard score). Furthermore, about 50% of them fell in the “extremely low IQ” range, compared with 2-3% of general population. A higher incidence of intellectual disability was confirmed in symptomatic DMD carriers (mean IQ 66; extremely low) from the IRCCS Mondino, but not for the asymptomatic ones (mean IQ 99; average), when compared to the general population.</p>
The Importance of Cognitive Executive Functions in Gait Recovery After Total Hip Arthroplasty
<p>Objective: To determine the influence of cognitive functioning on gait recovery after total hip arthroplasty.<br> Design: Prospective cohort study.<br> Setting: Rehabilitation hospital.<br> Participants: Patients (NZ40) who underwent a total hip arthroplasty, with normal cognitive functioning and without any other relevant medical condition, were recruited and studied before surgery and at the beginning and the end of the rehabilitation program.<br> Main Outcome Measures: Gait speed (10-Meter Walk Test [10MWT]) and gait functional mobility (Timed Up and Go [TUG] test), measured at the time of discharge from the rehabilitation unit, were the primary outcomes. The candidate predictors were the cognitive and psychological variables collected in the presurgery phase, together with other potentially informative measures such as age, education, perceived pain, body mass index, presurgical gait speed and functional mobility.<br> Results: Our results suggest the existence of a direct relationship between cognitive functioning, with specific reference to high-level frontal executive functions, and the postoperative gait progress: the better the cognitive functioning in the preoperative phase, the better the course of recovery in terms of gait speed and functional mobility.<br> In particular, the performance of the Frontal Assessment Battery test, together with age, perceived pain. Presurgical gait speed and functional mobility, was the best predictor of recovery of walking measured by 10MWT and TUG.<br> Conclusions: The present study highlights the importance of cognitive functioning, together with clinical and demographic features, in the postsurgical recovery of walking, even in the absence of cognitive decline.<br> In particular, these data show the crucial role of higher-order cognitive processes, such as executive functions, involved in the formulation of motor plans and their integration with proprioceptive and visual cues.</p>
