Small mammal species composition data for Niwot Ridge, 1981 - 1990.

Small mammals were live trapped during the summer of each year at various locations on Niwot Ridge. Species trapped included pikas (Ochotona princeps), marmots (Marmota flaviventris), deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus), voles (Microtus longicaudus, Microtus montanus, and Phenacomys intermedius), and pocket gophers (Thomomys talpoides). Pocket gophers were only trapped through the summer of 1983. Mice and voles were trapped using Sherman traps, while Tomahawk traps were used to trap both the pikas and marmots. Sherman gopher traps were used to trap gophers. The mice and vole traps were placed 10 meters apart in parallel rows in grids containing from 25 to 100 traps; weather permitting, these traps were placed for 3 consecutive nights every 1 or 2 weeks from June to August. The pikas, marmots, and gophers were trapped during late summer of each year; consult Halfpenny et al. (1984; 1987) for a general description of these trap locations, as well as descriptions of baiting and handling techniques and surrounding vegetation communities. Pika and marmot traps were selectively placed in areas where evidence of these animals existed. In the case of the pocket gophers, traps were placed below ground in active mounds. For pikas, marmots and pocket gophers, traps were set during the day and were checked every 2 hours. After determining and recording species, sex, age, reproductive status, weight, health, and trap location, trapped animals were permanently tagged and released. An additional quality-controlled, derived data-table (pikas_no_recap.cr.data.csv) was added to the original dataset in 2022. This data table is derived from the original capture data, but includes only year-unique captures, where each year-unique capture is the "best" one for comparison with other year-unique captures. Plant species composition data for Saddle grid, 1989 - ongoing.

Permanent 1 m^2 vegetation plots were established near each of the 88 Saddle grid stakes in 1989 by Marilyn Walker, who led the sampling effort until 1997. To estimate plant canopy cover, point quadrat measurements have been made at irregular intervals from 1989 to the present (1989, 1990, 1995, 1997, 2006, 2008 and yearly from 2010 onward). Dissolved inorganic nutrients including 5 macro nutrients: silicate, phosphate, nitrate, nitrite, and ammonium from water column bottle samples collected between October and April at Palmer Station, 1991 - 2025.

The inorganic plant macronutrients dissolved phosphate, silicate, nitrate, nitrite and ammonium are the major sources of nutrition for phytoplankton growth in seawater (with sunlight and inorganic carbon). Macronutrient distributions reflect the large-scale circulation patterns in the oceans and are useful properties to delineate water masses. Dissolved inorganic nutrients samples are typically collected in every Niskin bottle sample collected at and near Palmer Station, Anvers Island, Antarctica on the Western Antarctic Peninsula. Water samples are collected throughout the water column at stations within the Palmer LTER region (primarily B and E, to 50m and 65m respectively). Beginning in the 2020-2021 season, Station B is no longer sampled. In Antarctic waters, dissolved inorganic macronutrients are seldom depleted to limiting concentrations except during heavy prolonged phytoplankton blooms. This is due to the fact that phytoplankton growth is more often limited by light or iron, and to the short growing season. Water samples are analyzed for dissolved nutrients with recognized standard oceanographic protocols for nutrient autoanalyzers (continuous flow analyzers).

Merged discrete water-column data from PAL LTER research cruises along the Western Antarctic Peninsula, from 1991 to 2024.

Water samples are collected throughout the water column along the Western Antarctic Peninsula at regular LTER grid stations where CTD casts are preformed and in surface waters at underway stations, where CTD casts are not done, using the ship's flow-through seawater system. This dataset is the compilation of water samples collected at these stations, merged from other PAL-LTER datasets. Data includes water column Chlorophyll and Phaeopigment concentrations; phytoplankton accessory pigments -including other chlorophyll's (e.g. chlorophyll b), xanthophylls, and carotenes; primary production rates; bacterial production; dissolved organic carbon; particulate organic carbon and nitrogen; dissolved inorganic nutrients; dissolved oxygen, and dissolved inorganic carbon and alkalinity. Measurements of phytoplankton Fv/Fm measured using a FIRe (Fluorescence Induction and Relaxation) fluorometer are also included, though caution is urged as FIRe data has not been corrected nor QCed. Conductivity, temperature, depth, and associated data from instruments on the sampling rosette (e.g. PAR, beam transmission) for each sampling depth are also included. Phytoplankton accessory pigment data is unavailable for the LMG10-01 cruise due to instrumentation problems and for the LMG12-01 cruise due to a freezer failure which resulted in the loss of samples. Dissolved oxygen measurements were discontinues after 2012, and thus no data is available from 2013 onwards. Dissolved Organic Carbon data is unavailable after 2012 due to instrumentation problems. There is no Particulate Organic Carbon data for cruise PD94-01.

This dataset is the compilation of water samples collected at these stations, merged from other PAL-LTER datasets. Dissolved Organic Carbon data is unavailable after 2012 due to instrumentation problems. There is no Particulate Organic Carbon after the 2012 season.

Euphausia superba length frequency from zooplankton collected with a 2-m, 700-um net towed from surface to 120 m, aboard Palmer LTER annual cruises off the coast of the Western Antarctic Peninsula, 1993 - 2024.

Euphausia superba standard lengths (SL) were measured at grid stations on the annual LTER cruises along the western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP). Annual cruises take place between late December to early February, except for the NBP21-13 cruise, which was November and December. Krill were collected with a 2x2 meter, 700um mesh net fitted with a flow meter and towed obliquely to 120m.

PIE LTER surveys of salt marsh breeding birds using point counts in Rowley and Newbury, Massachusetts

This data set contains the results of point count surveys of breeding birds in the salt marshes of the Plum Island Estuary. Surveys have been carried out each year in June beginning in 2004 and are ongoing. Currently six circles of 100 m radius are being surveyed. Three of the circles are in plots that had been regularly hayed and three in unhayed plots. Currently only one of the plots is regularly hayed. 85 species recorded as of 2020. Most frequently encountered are Agelaius phoeniceus, Ammospiza caudacuta, Tringa semipalmata.

PIE LTER water-column nutrient and particulate transects along the Parker River Estuary, Massachusetts, 1994 - 2019.

Water chemistry including nutrient concentrations for various forms of N, P, C, as well as suspended sediments and light extinction coefficients, was determined from bi-annual nutrient transects along the Plum Island Sound estuary from the Parker River Dam to the mouth of the sound. Grab samples were taken at 11 sites along a 24 km transect from the mouth of the estuary to as near the dam at the head of the estuary as poosible. These samples have generally been collected in Spring and Fall and are done in conjunction with metabolism transects measuring dissolved oxygen levels. The Spring and Fall transects correspond to the high-flow, pre-growth season and the low-flow, post-growth season, respectively.

SBC LTER: Reef: Long-term experiment: biomass of kelp forest species

These data represent values of biomass density for more than 200 species of macroalgae, invertebrates and fish measured in fixed plots at five reefs as part of a long-term experiment designed to evaluate the effects of disturbance to giant kelp on the structure and productivity of the benthic community. Taxon-specific relationships between size and mass were applied to field measurements of species abundance to estimate biomass density of each species. The five reefs (Arroyo Quemada 34°28.048’N, 120°07.031’W; Carpinteria 34°23.474’N, 119°32.510’W; Isla Vista 34°23.275’N, 119°32.792’W; Mohawk 34°23.649’N, 119°43.762’W; and Naples 34° 25.342’N, 119° 57.102’W) ranged in depth from 5.8 m to 8.9 m (MLLW) and were chosen to represent a range of physical and biological characteristics known to influence subtidal macroalgal assemblages in the region. A common (but not always persistent) feature on these reefs was the presence of the giant kelp, which forms a dense canopy at the sea surface that suppresses recruitment and growth of understory algae below it. SBC LTER: Ocean: HFR-derived surface flow metrics, surface water retention times, and related factors in the Santa Barbara Channel (2012-2019)

This data package include three files: 1. daily maps of High-Frequency Radar (HFR) measured surface currents, indices of mesoscale eddy locations, and local retention times on a 2km grid; 2. monthly time series of wind stress, alongshore pressure gradient, surface current EOF principal components, vorticity, eddy area, eddy presence, and spatially averaged retention times from January 2012 to December 2019; 3. A MATLAB script for plotting the maps and timeseries. These data were processed in order to investigate the drivers of surface water retention in the Santa Barbara Channel, CA, details of which are available in the study: Brokaw, R.J., D.A.
