SBC LTER: Reef: Seasonal Kelp Forest Community Dynamics: biomass of kelp forest species, ongoing since 2008
These data represent values of biomass density for more than 200 species of macroalgae, invertebrates and fish measured in fixed plots at five reefs as part of SBCLTER's seasonal kelp forest monitoring program to track long-term patterns in species abundance and diversity. Taxon-specific relationships between size and mass were applied to field measurements of species abundance to estimate biomass density of each species. The five reefs (Arroyo Quemada 34°28.048’N, 120°07.031’W; Carpinteria 34°23.474’N, 119°32.510’W; Isla Vista 34°23.275’N, 119°32.792’W; Mohawk 34°23.649’N, 119°43.762’W; and Naples 34° 25.342’N, 119° 57.102’W) ranged in depth from 5.8 m to 8.9 m (MLLW) and were chosen to represent a range of physical and biological characteristics known to influence subtidal macroalgal assemblages in the region.

This dataset provides estimates of seasonal net primary production (NPP) for all taxa of macroalgae sampled in fixed plots of the SBC LTER's seasonal kelp forest monitoring sites. SBC LTER: Hourly photon irradiance at the surface and seafloor, ongoing since 2008
These data represent mean hourly values of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) (in units of mol m-2 s-1) at five subtidal reefs and one coastal location off Santa Barbara, California. Sensors record instantaneous irradiance at one-minute or 30 second intervals, and data are averaged hourly. Sensors are mounted on the sea floor at five sites (Arroyo Quemado, Carpinteria, Naples Reef, Isla Vista, and Mohawk Reef). A surface sensor is deployed on an unobstructed coastal rooftop at the UC Santa Barbara campus; some historical observations are available from sensors mounted above the sea surface at a subset of the five sites.
SBC LTER: Reef: Annual time series of biomass for kelp forest species, ongoing since 2000
These data are annual estimates of biomass of approximately 225 taxa of reef algae, invertebrates and fish in permanent transects at 11 kelp forest sites in the Santa Barbara Channel (2-8 transects per site). Abundance is measured annually (as percent cover or density, by size) and converted to biomass (i.e., wet mass, dry mass, decalcified dry mass, ash free dry mass) using published taxon-specific algorithms. Data collection began in summer 2000 and continues annually in summer to provide information on community structure, population dynamics and species change. The time period of data collection varied among the 11 kelp forest sites. Sampling at BULL, CARP, and NAPL began in 2000, sampling at the other 6 mainland sites (AHND, AQUE, IVEE, GOLB, ABUR, MOHK) began in 2001 (transects 3, 5, 6, 7, 8 at IVEE were added in 2011). Data collection at the two Santa Cruz Island sites (SCTW and SCDI) began in 2004. See Methods for more information.

The experiment was initiated in 2008 at 4 sites; a fifth site as added in 2011. Data collection is ongoing. NPP of understory taxa was calculated using field measurements of irradiance and biomass (derived from abundance) and laboratory estimates of taxon-specific photosynthetic parameters. NPP for the giant kelp, Macrocystis pyrifera, was calculated using linear relationships between frond density in a given season and average NPP for that season.
SBC LTER: Ocean: Time-series: nearshore calibrated pH and temperature outside of reefs, ongoing since 2011
Calibrated pH (Total scale, SeaFET sensor) data was collected from 10 reefs in the Santa Barbara Channel along with in situ temperature. Most pH sensors are deployed together with SBC long-term mooring instruments. Data collection intervals and SeaFET sensor depths vary based on the site location.
SBC LTER: Time series of quarterly NetCDF files of kelp biomass in the canopy from Landsat 5, 7 and 8, since 1984 (ongoing)
This data file represents a time series of canopy area of giant kelp, Macrocystis pyrifera, and bull kelp, Nereocystis luetkeana, and canopy biomass of giant kelp derived from Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper (TM), Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+), Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI), and Landsat 9 Operational Land Imager 2 satellite imagery, along with relevant metadata. The kelp canopy is composed of the portions of fronds and stipes floating on the surface of the water. Canopy area (m) data are given for individual 30 x 30 meter pixels for all coastal areas of Baja California, Mexico, California, Oregon, and the outer coast of Washington (including offshore islands). Biomass data (wet weight, kg) are given for individual 30 x 30 meter pixels in the coastal areas extending from near Ano Nuevo, CA through the southern range limit in Baja California (including offshore islands), representing the range where giant kelp is the dominant canopy forming species. Data were derived from the three Landsat sensors listed above. Observations are made on a 16 day repeat cycle, for each instrument, but the temporal coverage is irregular because of cloud cover, instrument failure, and the mission length of each sensor (TM: 1984 – 2011, ETM+: 1999 – present, OLI: 2013 – present). Estimates of canopy area are derived from the fractional cover of kelp canopy determined from satellite surface reflectance. Estimates of kelp canopy biomass are derived from the relationship between giant kelp fractional cover determined from satellite surface reflectance and empirical measurements of giant kelp canopy biomass in long-term SBC LTER study plots obtained using SCUBA. The different Landsat sensors were calibrated to each other using simulated Landsat data derived from hyperspectral imagery. Tree Mast Production in Pinyon-Juniper-Oak Forests at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico
The purpose of this study is to monitor the fruit production of three common woody tree species that occur on the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) in New Mexico. We estimate fruit production of two monoecious species, Pinus edulis (pinon pine) and Quercus turbinella (Sonoran scrub oak) and one dioecious species, Juniperus monosperma (one-seed juniper). During August – November, we estimate fruit production for these three species at up to six sites within the Sevilleta NWR. Different protocols are used for each species (see Methods). In addition, the age and/or size of each individual tree was assessed at the beginning of the study, excepting in one site (WM) where fruit counts occurred at the plot, rather than individual tree, scale. For P. edulis and J. monosperma, trees wre binned into categories of young, medium, old, or very old trees. For Q. turbinella, we estimate canopy surface area in m 2
Bee species abundance and composition in three ecosystem types at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico, USA
This study was designed to examine community- or population-level fluctuations in bee species at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, both intra- and inter-annually. From 2002 to 2019, passive funnel traps were used to collect bees at three sites, each representing a different ecosystem type of the southwestern U.S. (Plains grassland, Chihuahuan Desert grassland, and Chihuahuan Desert shrubland). Bees were collected during each month from March through October, and were identified to species by taxonomic experts.
Fertilization (NPK) alter dryland biogeochemical processes
Nutrient augmentation is one major global change disturbance that could have cascading effects on local plant and microbial communities thus altering biogeochemical properties (Peñuelas et al. 2012). While many studies have investigated fertilization effects on community change and ecosystem processes, less work has been done in dryland ecosystems (Schimel 2010), where nutrient availability often comes as pulses correlated with rain events (Collins et al. 2008). We leveraged an ongoing fertilization experiment (NutNet) at the Sevilleta to answer the question: How does fertilization alter dryland biogeochemical processes, and how does this effect change seasonally? To explore this topic, we specifically measure three important soil hydrolase enzymes, N-acetyl- glycosaminidase (NAG), phosphatase (AP), and β- glucosidase (BG), microbial biomass, and soil nitrogen levels at 5 points along a seasonal gradient within the NutNet plots.
Small Mammal Demographic Data at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico
This file contains mark/recapture trapping data collected from 2013-present on permanently established small mammal trapping webs in the creosote-shrubland ecotone on the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge in central New Mexico. The two trapping webs are sampled for 3 consecutive nights once per month following the new moon. Each trapping web consists of 145 rebar stakes, 12 spokes originating from a central rebar point, each containing 12 rebars each. The first 4 stakes of the spoke are 5m apart, with the rest being 10m apart for a total of 100m per spoke (200m diameter). Demographic data is collected from each captured animal including age, sex, species, trap location, and reproductive status. Each animal is marked with a unique ear or radio frequency identification (RFID) tag and tissue samples (hair, whiskers, blood and fecal) are collected from each individual once per month. Demographic Findings: From 2013–2023, the program captured an average of 432 unique individuals per year across >10 species from two rodent families, Heteromyidae and Cricetidae. Heteromyids are the most abundant (~77% of captures), with Perognathus flavus (51%), Dipodomys merriami (11%), D. ordii (11%), and D. spectabilis (4%) dominating the community. Recapture rates for these species are >75%, generating longitudinal data on survival.
Precipitation-productivity relationships in desert grassland: a test of the double asymmetry hypothesis.
The purpose of this data package is to provide the derived data and R code for analyses presented in the manuscript by Collins et al. Knowing the relationship between precipitation (PPT) and aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) is essential for understanding and modeling the global carbon cycle. Across grassland to forest gradients, the PPT-ANPP relationship is well-defined and non-linear. Temporal patterns within a site over time, however, are more variable than spatial patterns and nearly always linear. Linear relationships, however, are inconsistent with positive asymmetry occurring when the increase in ANPP in a wet year is greater than the decline in a dry year. The double asymmetry model predicts that concave down non-linearities will occur when extreme high and low PPT years are included in a time series. We used long-term ANPP data from ambient plots, plus rainfall addition and reduction experiments to test the predictions of the double asymmetry model. By combining experimental drought, plus water and nitrogen addition experiments we found some support for the double asymmetry model. However, the response was concave up not down under high precipitation coupled with nitrogen addition. By experimentally extending the range of monsoon precipitation we generated a significant although weak, non-linear PPT-ANPP relationship, but only when nutrient limitation was alleviated. Our results demonstrate that multiple interacting factors govern the PPT-ANPP relationship within a site over time.
Plant species cover and biomass for Sevilleta dominant species removal experiment.
The purpose of this research project was to connect the removal of dominant grass species in grasslands at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge to changes in plant community composition and subsequent changes in aboveground biomass. We used species cover data for 23 years of a dominant species removal experiment (https://doi.org/10.6073/pasta/fd3c777524231ae245bf1916715c9140) and converted percent cover values to aboveground standing biomass using methods from Rudgers et al. 2019 (https://doi.org/10.1111/1365-2435.13463). For this project, only two sites from the original study were used blue grama (site 1) and black grama (site 3) as they are referred to in the original study.
Survey of small mammals using trapping data on all Virginia Coast Reserve barrier islands south of Parramore Island (inclusive) 1975-1978
During 1975 and 1977 live-trapping surveys of small-mammals of the Virginia Barrier Islands were conducted. Primary species encountered were Oryzomys palustris, Mus musculus, Micrutus pennsylvanicus, Rattus norvegicus, Cryptotis parva, and Peromyscus leucopus. Data is presented as primary trapping records giving the date of capture, island, species, sex and reproductive condition of the captured animal. Each animal was tagged to allow individual identification upon recapture. Each island was typically trapped for 8 days in two 4-day sessions.
Precipitation data for four sites on the eastern side of Delmarva Peninsula, 2001-2022
Rain gauges (Davis Instruments rain collector with HOBO Event Recorder) were installed at four sites latitudinally along the Eastern Shore, VA to measure instantaneous rainfall. The logger only records when there is a precipitation event (0.2 mm minimum). We calculated daily rain totals and provided only dates with rain. The data represents the time period of 8/9/01 on for Mill, Garg, and Mosq sites and 10/16/01 on for Wach site. The system was down between October 2008 and December 2010. It was replaced by an upgraded system in January 2011 with new Davis tipping-bucket rain gauges and data loggers, and primary responsibility for data collection and processing shifted to VCR/LTER staff. This file will be updated when additional data is downloaded from the rain gauges.

End of Year Biomass in Marshes of the Virginia Coast Reserve 1999-2007
NOTE THIS DATASET HAS BEEN SUPERCEDED BY DATASET VCR09159 This is the end of the year biomass information for the megasite marsh study. Annual sampling of a number of salt marshes and transitional zones into the upland was begun in 1999. And has continued annually. Goals The goal of this long-term project is to look at how sea-level rise affects marsh evolution. Seventeen sites along Virginia's eastern shore have been selected to study marsh evolution on both the mainland and the barrier islands. The original project established initial site characteristics.
Surface Elevation Data for the Upper Phillips Creek Marsh at the Virginia Coast Reserve 1998-2025
This dataset contains data from Surface Elevation Tables (SETs), Root SETs (RSET), and Marker Horizons (MH) located at the Virginia Coast Reserve. NOTE: These research plots are highly sensitive to disturbance and should not be approached by anyone not engaged in taking measurements. Mark Brinson, Robert Christian and Linda Blum conceived the experimental design, installed (1997), and measured (1997-2011) the SET and MH. After Mark Brinson died in 2011, Robert Christian and Linda Blum continued SET and MH measurements through 2017. VCR Staff and Keryn Gedan assumed responsibility for SET and MH measurements subsequent to 2017. Linda Blum and Pat Willis installed the RSET (2003). Pat was responsible for measuring the RSET between (2003-2005). Between 2005-2017, Linda Blum was responsible for measuring the RSET in addition to the SET and MH. Subsequent to 2017, Cora Johnson Baird and Keryn Gedan assumed responsibility for RSET measurements.
High and Low Tides of Hog Island Bay, Redbank, VA, and Oyster, VA for the Virginia Coast Reserve 2007-2025
This dataset is a summary version of the 12-minute tide data. It records the date, time and level of tides at high and low tide (as indicated by the data). Water temperatures are also recorded.
Flux Tower Data for Fowling Point Marsh at the Virginia Coast Reserve 2007-2008
This dataset contains measurements of CO2 and H2O concentrations, temperature and wind speed made every 1/10th of a second. Important note: due to the high frequency of measurements, this dataset is very large (>25 GB) and may take a long time to download. For this reason the main vcrflux_cpole.csv file is provided as well in compressed (.gz and .zip) forms which are only about 6 GB. There are two additional files. Tide_PPT_temp_2007_2008.csv contains 1-per-minute data on tide level, temperature at different heights on the tower and precipitation. Wind_light_temp_2007_2008.csv contains 1-minute summaries of wind, light, and temperature. The research was conducted at the Virginia Coastal Reserve Long Term Ecological Research (VCR LTER) site on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, USA. The flux tower site (37deg 24'39.85"N, 75deg 50'0.53"W) a lagoonal salt marsh which is located near the area of Fowling point. The site is located at about 2.2 kilometers away from the mainland and 10.7 kilometers away from Hog Island, the nearest barrier island. The flux tower is situated at about 80 meters away from the creek edge, on the lagoonal salt marsh.
