High frequency wind recored from sonic anemometers: Impact of swell waves on atmospheric surface turbulence
<p>Wind-wave interaction affects the fluxes of exchange processes across the air-sea wavy interface. For example, several measurements and modelling experiments have suggested that during the swell waves the wind shear and veer may significantly vary (depending on thermal stratification among other environmental factors). This dataset shows interesting wave energy penetration observed from sonic anemometer mounted at an offshore met-mast at 15m height above the mean sea level. PHOENIX MARS MET LIDAR ATMOSPHERIC PROFILES EDR V1.0
The PHX Atmospheric Lidar Profiles product contains unprocessed laser scattering atmospheric profiles for photon counting data at 532nm, and analog data at both 532 and 1064nm wavelengths (expressed in Dignal Numbers). The range data is provided as a time series of profiles between 5 and 90 min in total duration, with each profile representing an accumulation or average over 1.28-20.24 sec. Supplemental data of estimated laser power and inter-profile analog background skylight estimates are also provided.
VL1/VL2 MARS LCS DERIVED ATMOSPHERIC OPTICAL DEPTH V1.0
Viking Lander camera images of the Sun were used to compute total normal atmospheric optical depth at the two landing sites over a period of about 900 Mars days. The data set contains 1044 measurements of optical depth and associated error estimates. The optical depths were derived from Sun diode images, which were obtained by the Lander cameras at a wavelength of 0.67 micrometers. Note that no images of Phobos were used in deriving this data set. Studies of diurnal, seasonal, and annual variations in optical depth, surface-based observations of great dust storms, and analyses of the contributions of ice haze and dust particles to the observed optical depth, have been carried out using these data. See COLBURN_ETAL_1989, POLLACK_ETAL_1977, and POLLACK_ETAL_1977 for further information on the derivation and interpretation of this data set.

MGS RS: ATMOSPHERIC TEMPERATURE-PRESSURE PROFILES V1.0
This data set contains over 21000 temperature-pressure profiles (TPS files) of the neutral atmosphere derived from Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) radio occultation data. The profiles were previously archived in the MGS-M-RSS-5-SDP-V1.0 data set along with other reduced data products from the MGS Radio Science Team (RST). Here they have been pulled from the original 38 volumes and reorganized in chronological order on a single volume. The profiles themselves have not been modified, and the labels have been edited only to conform with the requirements of the new data set. This set of profiles is accompanied by a single occultation summary file which lists key characteristics of each experiment.

VO1/VO2 MARS ATMOSPHERIC WATER DETECTOR 4 V1.0
This data set consists of the raster-averaged radiant intensities and associated data parameters produced from data acquired by the Mars Atmospheric Water Detectors (MAWD) onboard the Viking Orbiters. The basic observations give temporal coverage spanning just over two martian years and variable, but extensive, spatial coverage of the planet. MAWD was a five-channel grating spectrometer measuring solar radiation reflected from the surface and atmosphere of Mars in and out of water vapor bands in the 1.4 micrometer spectral interval. The data set described here contains the solar reflected radiant intensities (i.e., radiances) measured by MAWD, derived water vapor column abundances, a derived '1.4-micrometer brightness', and ancillary data (e.g., viewing geometry, surface elevation and air mass). Column water vapor abundances were derived by comparing the reflected radiant intensities in three water vapor absorption bands to radiant intensities in the two interspersed continua observed air mass and then normalized by the air mass to obtain a vertical column abundance. A basic description of the instrument, its observational modes and its derived data products is given in [FARMER_ETAL_1977]. A description of the global and seasonal variation of water vapor on Mars, based on the complete MAWD observational record, is given in [JAKOSKY_FARMER_1982]. This data set was generated from the raster-level data base constructed during the Viking Mission on the original data processing system (IRPS: Infrared Processing System) by the MAWD Science Team, led by C. B. Farmer, JPL. Together with the instantaneous field of view (IFOV) radiances and geometry, the raster-level radiances, associated water column abundances and ancillary data have been archived at the NSSDC (NSSDC id 75-075A-03A, 75-083A-03A). Data from the final phase of the VO-1 mission were added, supervised by R. Zurek, JPL. Eventually, the data set was restructured, additional quality flags were introduced, and a second estimate of the water vapor column abundance (WFAPT, termed COLUMN_H2O_A in the data set) was added [by R. Zurek, JPL [JAKOSKY_ETAL_1988].]. The data base was restructured, while preserving key unique parameters, into a consistent format with the Viking Orbiter Infrared Thermal Mapper (IRTM) data [R. Mehlman, R. Zurek]. Both the MAWD and IRTM data sets were then accessible with the XXFUNC package. Further quality checking of the MAWD data was carried out by B. Jakosky, U. Colorado.
Experimental study on the variation of atmospheric magnetic field intensity in dust evets, haze events, rainy days, snowy days and thunderstorms
<p>The simultaneous measurement of vertical magnetic field intensity (<em>B<sub>z</sub></em>), three-dimensional electric field (<em>E<sub>x</sub></em>, <em>E<sub>y</sub></em>, <em>E<sub>z</sub></em>), ambient temperature (<em>T</em>), ambient relative humidity (<em>RH</em>), mass concentration (<em>PM</em><sub>2.5</sub> and <em>PM</em><sub>10</sub>) and three-dimensional wind speed (<em>U<sub>x</sub></em>, <em>U<sub>y</sub></em>, <em>U<sub>z</sub></em>) were conducted at Lanzhou, China and Xi'an, China during haze events, dust events, snowfall events, rainfall events and thunderstorms. The hourly mean value and hourly standard deviation of d<em>B<sub>z</sub>/</em>d<em>t</em> were used to evaluate the disturbance level of atmospheric magnetic field (AMF) during these weather. The hourly mean value of d<em>B<sub>z</sub></em>/d<em>t</em> in dusty days, rainy days, snowy days and thunderstorms varies evidently compared to that in fair weather, which implies that these weather conditions will effectively affect the variation of AMF. Analysis of <em>E<sub>z</sub></em> and <em>U</em><em><sub>xy</sub></em> suggests that the movement of charged particles under the action of horizontal wind will change the average currents in atmosphere and induce a magnetic field, and this induced magnetic field will disturb the variation of AMF. Hence, the induced magnetic fields generated by the movement of charged particles should not be ignored in these complex weather conditions. The analysis of d<em>E<sub>xy</sub></em>/d<em>t</em> shows that the induced magnetic field generated by the change of the electric field can disturb the AMF as well. In addition, hourly standard deviations of d<em>B<sub>z</sub></em>/d<em>t</em> in haze event, snowfall event and thunderstorms are larger than that in fair weather, which means that these events can influence the fluctuation of AMF. The approximate circular motion of charged particles in the horizontal plane under turbulence was discussed to be the main reason for the intense fluctuation of AMF in haze and snowfall events, but the large fluctuation of AMF in thunderstorms maybe attributed to the transient changes of space electric field under lightning.</p>
