SHIFT: Vegetation Plot Photos, Santa Barbara, CA, USA, 2022

This dataset contains photographs of the plots where field vegetation sampling was conducted during the 2022 NASA Surface Biology Geology (SBG) High Frequency Time series (SHIFT) campaign. Sampling occurred at the Jack and Laura Dangermond Preserve, Sedgwick Reserve, and Carpinteria Salt Marsh Reserve, which are located in Santa Barbara County, California, USA. Photographs were taken from 2022-02-23 to 2022-09-18. This project collected field data contemporaneously with weekly flights of Airborne Visible-Infrared Imaging Spectrometer-Next Generation (AVIRIS-NG) over the study areas. Related SHIFT data packages contain additional biogeochemical, reflectance, and foliar data.

Data from: Variation in three community features across habitat types and scales within a 15-ha subtropical evergreen-deciduous broadleaved mixed forest dynamics plot in China

The evergreen and deciduous broadleaved mixed forests (EDBMFs) belong to one of the ecosystems most sensitive to environmental change, however, little is known about the environmental determinants for their plant diversity and forest structure at different habitat types and spatial scales. Here, we used data from a 15-ha (300×500 m) forest dynamic plot (FDP) of an old-growth EDBMF to examine the patterns and determinants of the three community features (stem abundance, rarefied species richness and basal area) in three habitat types (ridge, hillside and foothill) and at three spatial scales (20×20 m, 50×50 m and 100×100 m). We found that the three community features significantly changed with habitat type, but only one of them (rarefied richness) changed with scale. Among spatial scales, the principle environmental factors that widely affected community features were pH, SOM and TP, while these effects only taken place at certain habitat. Variations in the three community features explained by soil conditions were generally greater than those explained by topographical conditions. With changes in habitat type, the proportion of variations explained by environmental conditions was 31-53%, 8-25%, and 18-26% for abundance, rarefied richness and basal area (BA), respectively. With increasing spatial scale, the variations explained by environmental conditions were 44-75% for abundance, 28-95% for rarefied richness, and 18-86% for BA. Our study demonstrated that environmental factors had great impacts on the plant diversity and forest structure in the EDBMFs, especially the soil factors such as pH. In addition, the importance of the environmental determinants on these community features was highly related to the spatial scale.

Census data from 65 tree plots in Panama, 1994-2015

These are data from 65 tree plots in Panama established over 1994-2014; 43 of the plots have been recensused, while 22 plots have just a single census. Details of census methods are described in Condit (1998) and Condit et al. (2013). The 65 plots here are mostly 1 ha in area, though several are 0.32 ha, one is 4 ha, and one is 6 ha. Those two larger censuses are the Sherman and Cocoli plots described in Condit et al. (2004). A companion data archive includes all data from the Barro Colorado 50-ha plot (Condit et al. 2019).

The PIs would like to be informed of papers resulting from the marena plot data. Depending on our level of interest and how much a paper depends on the plots, co-authorship might be requested.
References

Condit, R., Engelbrecht, B. M. SBE Seedling Matrix Plot Dataset

Description

This dataset covers a network of stations placed across the south block of the Sabah Biodiversity Experiment (SBE). Two stations were placed in 54 of the SBE plots spanning the range of monocultures, 4-species mixtures, 16-species mixtures and non-planted controls. The stations are a group of three plots placed in a T-formation between the planting lines of the SBE. Each plot in the station are 1 x 1 m where all seedlings were measured for height, diameter at base (5 cm above the soil) and diameter at breast height (1.3 m, if the seedling had sufficient height). Seedlings were identified to species or genus if possible.

Data Access

The dataset is only available upon the approval of Dr. Michael O'Brien (mikey.j.obrien@gmail.com) and Dr. David Burslem (d.burslem@abdn.ac.uk) under the expectation that all authors mentioned here are included as co-authors on any publications that use this dataset.

Notes for users

1. Complete data from the Barro Colorado 50-ha plot: 423617 trees, 35 years

The 50-ha plot at Barro Colorado Island was initially demarcated and fully censused in 1982, and has been fully censused 7 times since, every 5 years from 1985 through 2015 (Hubbell and Foster 1983, Hubbell et al. 1990, Condit et al. 2012, Condit et al. 2017). Every measurement of every stem over 8 censuses is included in this archive. Most users will need only the 8 R Analytical Tables in the format tree, which come here zipped together into a single archive (bci.tree.zip), plus the single R Species Table. Additional tables cover all individuals stems, additional measurements at mulitple positions on some stems, and the full database in original MySQL format. This is the 2019 version of the database, frozen as of 30 May 2019, replacing the 2012 Smithsonian archive (http://dx.doi.org/10.5479/data.bci.20130603). There are unauthorized versions of the BCI database available elsewhere. This is the only version approved by the lead investigators (Condit and Hubbell).

PIs Condit and Hubbell would like to be informed of papers resulting from the BCI plot data. Depending on our level of interest and how much a paper depends on the BCI plot, co-authorship might be requested.

Please cite this archive as

Condit R., Perez, R., Aguilar, S., Lao, S., Foster, R., Hubbell, S.P. 2019.
