A model of the optimal selection of crypto assets - simulation code
<p>In the modelling we assume that crypto assets differ by two essential features: security (technological) and stability (governance). Investors make choices over crypto assets similarly to how they make choices by using a recommender app: the app presents each investor with a pair of crypto assets with certain security-stability characteristics to be compared. Each investor submits its preference for adopting one of the two assets to the app. The app, in turn, provides a recommendation on whether the proposed adoption is sensible given the assets' essential features, information about the adoption choices of all other investors, and expected future economic benefits of adoption. Investors continue making their adoption choices over all pairs of crypto assets until their expected future economic benefits can no longer be improved upon. This constitutes an optimal selection decision. We simulate optimal selection decisions considering the behaviour of different types of investors, driven by their attitudes towards assets' features. We find a variety of possible emergent outcomes for the investments in the crypto-ecosystem and the future adoption of the crypto assets.</p>
Data from: A strengths-based data capture model: mining data-driven and person-centered health assets
With health care policy directives advancing value-based care, risk assessments and management have permeated health care discourse. The conventional problem-based infrastructure defines what data are employed to build this discourse and how it unfolds. Such a health care model tends to bias data for risk assessment and risk management toward problems and does not capture data about health assets or strengths. The purpose of this article is to explore and illustrate the incorporation of a strengths-based data capture model into risk assessment and management by harnessing data-driven and person-centered health assets using the Omaha System. This strengths-based data capture model encourages and enables use of whole-person data including strengths at the individual level and, in aggregate, at the population level. When aggregated, such data may be used for the development of strengths-based population health metrics that will promote evaluation of data-driven and person-centered care, outcomes, and value.
Data from: ASSET: analysis of sequences of synchronous events in massively parallel spike trains
With the ability to observe the activity from large numbers of neurons simultaneously using modern recording technologies, the chance to identify sub-networks involved in coordinated processing increases. Sequences of synchronous spike events (SSEs) constitute one type of such coordinated spiking that propagates activity in a temporally precise manner. The synfire chain was proposed as one potential model for such network processing. Previous work introduced a method for visualization of SSEs in massively parallel spike trains, based on an intersection matrix that contains in each entry the degree of overlap of active neurons in two corresponding time bins. Repeated SSEs are reflected in the matrix as diagonal structures of high overlap values. The method as such, however, leaves the task of identifying these diagonal structures to visual inspection rather than to a quantitative analysis. Here we present ASSET (Analysis of Sequences of Synchronous EvenTs), an improved, fully automated method which determines diagonal structures in the intersection matrix by a robust mathematical procedure. The method consists of a sequence of steps that i) assess which entries in the matrix potentially belong to a diagonal structure, ii) cluster these entries into individual diagonal structures and iii) determine the neurons composing the associated SSEs. We employ parallel point processes generated by stochastic simulations as test data to demonstrate the performance of the method under a wide range of realistic scenarios, including different types of non-stationarity of the spiking activity and different correlation structures. Finally, the ability of the method to discover SSEs is demonstrated on complex data from large network simulations with embedded synfire chains. Thus, ASSET represents an effective and efficient tool to analyze massively parallel spike data for temporal sequences of synchronous activity.

Improved nutritional status may promote an "asset protection" reproductive strategy in male rock lizards
<p><span>Investing in the current reproduction requires diverting energy resources from other metabolic functions, which may compromise future reproduction and lifespan. To solve this trade-off, an individual may consider its labile state to decide how much to invest in current reproduction. We tested experimentally whether the "state quality" of male rock lizards influences their reproductive strategies. To improve the nutritional status of males before the mating season, we captured and supplemented experimental males (<i>N</i> = 20) with dietary vitamin D3 (an essential nutrient for lizards) and had a control group of males (<i>N</i> = 20). Then, we released all these males and females (<i>N</i> = 31) in a large semi-natural outdoor enclosure where lizards could interact and mate freely during the mating period. Activity levels of males did not vary between treatments, but supplemented males started fewer intrasexual agonistic interactions and made fewer mating advances to females. When the mating season ended, we incubated eggs laid by females to obtain the offspring and estimated the paternity of males using DNA microsatellites. Supplemented males sired fewer offspring than control males. These results suggest that vitamin D3 supplemented males used a low risk/less costly mating strategy to protect their assets (i.e. vitamin D reserves), but that still resulted in "some" current reproductive success, while likely increasing longevity and the expected future total reproductive success.</span></p>

Connectedness and spillover effect between cryptocurrency and financial assets
Cryptocurrencies have quickly become one type of important financial asset. Accordingly, it is important to understand the interaction between cryptocurrency and other financial asset markets. However, previous literature paid less attention to the correlation between the price trend of cryptocurrencies and other financial assets. Using the vector autoregression model, we analyzed price correlation and spillover effect between cryptocurrencies and financial assets between November 2017 and February 2022. The study concludes that stock price has a spillover effect on cryptocurrencies, government bonds, and precious metals. The research results are useful while allocating portfolios or hedge strategies that include cryptocurrencies and financial assets such as stocks, government bonds, and precious metals.
