Data from: Historic and contemporary use of catfish aquaculture by piscivorous birds in the Mississippi Delta

<p>This dataset contains data used in the manuscript "Historic and contemporary use of catfish aquaculture by piscivorous birds in the Mississippi Delta", published in The Condor: Ornithological Applications. All data were collected in northwest Mississippi during winters (October - April) of 2000-2001, 2003-2004, 2015-2016, 2016-2017, and 2017-2018. Two primary types of data are present: 1) roost surveys, and 2) aquaculture cluster surveys. Roost surveys were aerial surveys in which all known double-crested cormorant night roosts in northwest Mississippi were surveyed and cormorants were counted. Roost survey data can be found in the "Cormorant_Roost_Survey_Counts.xlxs" file. For the aquaculture cluster surveys, clusters were defined as U.S. Geological Survey land survey sections that contained aquaculture. For each year of data, a random subset of these clusters were chosen to be aerial surveyed and double-crested cormorants, great blue herons, and great egrets were recorded per cluster. Basic descriptive statistics of the clusters can be found in the "Cluster_Descriptive_Stats.xlxs" file. The "Historic_vs_Contemporary_Cormorants.xlxs" file was used to compare cormorant density on aquaculture clusters between the historic period (2000-2001, 2003-2004) and contemporary period (2015-2016, 2016-2017, and 2017-2018). Lastly, the "Cluster_Survey_Data_Contemporary.xlxs" file contains data recorded during the contemporary period only, and other variables regarding the clusters are also present.</p>

Does experimental seaweed cultivation affect benthic communities and shorebirds? Applications for extensive aquaculture

<p>Extensive seaweed aquaculture is a growing industry expected to expand globally due to its relatively low impact and benefits in the form of ecosystem services. However, seaweeds are ecosystem engineers that may alter coastal environments by creating complex habitats on previously bare mudflats. These changes may scale up to top-consumers, particularly migratory shorebirds, species of conservation concern that regulate trophic webs at these habitats. Understanding how habitats are transformed and how this affects different species is critical to direct ecological applications for commercial seaweed management. We experimentally assessed through a Before-After Control-Impact (BACI) design the potential changes exerted by Gracilaria chilensis farming on bare mudflats on the abundance, biomass, and assemblage structure of benthic macroinvertebrates, and their scaled-up effects on shorebirds' habitat use and prey consumption. Experimental cultivation of G. chilensis significantly affects different components of biodiversity that scale-up from lower to upper trophic levels. The total biomass of benthic macroinvertebrates increased with seaweed cultivation and remained high for at least two months after harvest, boosted by an increase in the median size of polychaetes, particularly Nereids. Tactile-foraging shorebirds tracked these changes at the patch level increasing their abundance and spending more time foraging at seaweed cultivated plots. These results suggest that seaweed farming has the potential to impact shorebird populations by favouring tactile-foraging species which could lead to a competitive disadvantage to species that rely on visual cues. Therefore, the establishment of new seaweed farms in bare mudflats at key sites for shorebirds must be planned warranting habitat heterogeneity (i.e., cultivated and non-cultivated areas) at the landscape level and based on an experimental approach to account for local characteristics. Fostering properly designed extensive seaweed farming over other aquaculture industries with greater negative environmental impacts would provide benefits for human well-being and for ecosystem functions.</p>

Biofloc removal by the oyster Crassostrea gasar as a candidate species to an Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) system with the marine shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei

<p>Currently,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/agricultural-and-biological-sciences/aquaculture">aquaculture</a>&nbsp;seeks to implement production models that keep up with the global demands for sustainability and reduced environmental impacts. One of the options adopted is integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA), which cultivates species of different&nbsp;<a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/agricultural-and-biological-sciences/trophic-level">trophic levels</a>, improving the use of nutrients and increasing the economic profitability of the system. On the other hand, the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/agricultural-and-biological-sciences/biofloc-technology">Biofloc Technology</a>&nbsp;system (BFT) has also been highlighted as an important eco-friendly activity. In an attempt to reduce total suspended solids (TSS) and in accordance with the IMTA principles, the present work evaluated the action of the oyster&nbsp;<a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/veterinary-science-and-veterinary-medicine/crassostrea"><em>Crassostrea</em></a><em>&nbsp;gasar</em>&nbsp;on the reduction of TSS and its influence on the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/agricultural-and-biological-sciences/microbial-communities">microbial community</a>&nbsp;present on the bioflocs. An experiment with two treatments (With and Without Oyster) was carried out in waters from an ongoing marine shrimp crop. The experiment lasted for 5&nbsp;days, when water samples and oyster stomach content were collected for analysis of microorganisms. The water quality parameters did not show significant differences. The TSS and aggregates number also showed no differences between treatments, indicating that the presence of oysters did not influence the amount of total suspended solids. However, the predominance of flagellates in the stomach contents of the bivalves indicates a prey selectivity by&nbsp;<em>C. gasar</em>&nbsp;by this microorganism. Thus, it is likely that&nbsp;<em>C. gasar</em>&nbsp;is not an effective tool to reduce suspended solids in IMTA, but this organism can highly benefited from&nbsp;<a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/agricultural-and-biological-sciences/protozoa">protozoan</a>&nbsp;present in BFT system.</p>

Discordant spatio-temporal dynamics of functional and phylogenetic diversity of rotiferan communities exposed to aquaculture effluent

<p>The growth of the human population brought about the global intensification of aquacultural production, and aquaculture became the fastest growing animal husbandry sector. Effluent from aquaculture is an anthropogenic environmental burden, containing organic matter, nutrients, and suspended solids that affect water quality, especially in water bodies of high biodiversity and conservation value. Water quality assessment often relies on bioindicators, analysing changes in taxonomic diversity of various freshwater organismal groups. Stepping beyond taxon diversity, we used functional and phylogenetic diversities of rotifers to identify factors affecting their community organization in response to an aquaculture effluent gradient in the largest oxbow lake in the Carpathian Basin, Hungary. Sampling was carried out three times per season at five points along a 3.5 km section of the oxbow lake, including the point of effluent inflow. We used eight traits to evaluate functional diversity: body size, trophi type, feeding mode, protection type, body wall type, corona type, habitat preference, and tolerance level. Functional and phylogenetic distances among the 24 species identified indicated trait conservatism. Rotiferan diversity increased with increasing distance from the point of influx in spring and summer. Among the factors affecting community organization in spring and summer, we find examples of environmental filtering, while in autumn the role of biotic interaction is more frequent. Under nutrient-rich conditions in spring and summer, organisms belonging to the same functional group were dominant, while under oligotrophic conditions more diverse but less abundant groups were present. Considering functional and phylogenetic traits allowed us to identify organising forces of rotifer communities in the largest oxbow lake of the Hungarian Lowland.</p>

Data for: Waterbird abundance in aquaculture ponds: the significance of day and night and pond type

<p><span>The loss of coastal wetlands represents a grave threat to waterbirds, prompting the use of artificial wetlands, such as aquaculture ponds, as a means of conservation. Aquaculture ponds are common in coastal areas and provide production value and ecological function as waterbird habitats. However, certain piscivorous birds may cause economic losses to the aquaculture industry. Different types of ponds provide habitat for various bird assemblages, and waterbirds exhibit nocturnal feeding behavior and utilize habitats distinct from those used during the day. Most waterbird surveys were conducted during the daytime, limiting our understanding of their nocturnal habitat utilization. This study conducted diurnal and nocturnal surveys on shorebirds, waterfowl, and Black-crowned Night Heron (<em>Nycticorax</em> <em>nycticorax</em>) ten times in three aquaculture ponds situated in the Cigu District of Tainan, namely fish/shrimp, hard clam, and abandoned ponds between October 2021 and November 2022. The results showed no significant difference in shorebird density between day and night. However, shorebird density in fish/shrimp ponds was the highest and significantly higher than in abandoned ponds. Conversely, waterfowl density exhibits a significant increase in abandoned ponds compared to the other two pond types, irrespective of diurnal or nocturnal conditions. Furthermore, waterfowl density in abandoned ponds is significantly higher during daylight hours compared to the nocturnal period. In the daytime, the density of night herons was significantly higher in abandoned ponds than in the other two ponds. Nevertheless, during nighttime hours, fish/shrimp ponds exhibit the highest density of Black-crowned Night Herons, significantly surpassing that found in hard clam ponds. Notably, water coverage also influences the density of both shorebirds and waterfowl. The foraging frequency of waterfowl and night herons was greater during nocturnal hours, while shorebirds did not exhibit significant variations between day and night. Consequently, this study underscores the significance of considering both diurnal and nocturnal habitats in formulating strategies for waterbird conservation.</span></p>
