Coupled Situational Awareness System to Improve Transportation Infrastructure Performance during Extreme Events

The dense road networks and numerous low water crossings throughout Texas may be contributing to the higher recurrence rates of floods that pose a danger to vehicles. A timely issue that should be addressed by researchers is the compounding of disaster. Flooding can be combined with other life-threatening occurrences such as power loss and interruptions of health and emergency services. During these events, rescue requests from the stranded communities overwhelm the emergency response facilities; impassable roadways and the paucity of reliable information on the affected areas and their accessibility hamper emergency response operations, causing several detours and delays that put both the responders and evacuees at risk. This research presents a framework for improved situational awareness during extreme flooding events by combing a flood inundation model with transportation infrastructure performance assessment. The flood inundation model can be driven by real-time radar rainfall data in an efficient manner. The road network work model can use land use, census data, and locations of critical facilities in combination with spatial analysis. The proposed framework is demonstrated on a small catchment in San Antonio, Texas. The study includes the following tasks: literature review, vehicle-related flood fatality analysis, review of flood warning systems in Texas, and the proposed framework of a road flooding forecasting system that can predict land surface flooding in detail and the impacts on the road network and provide information on the spatial and temporal evolution of road network access during flooding events. It is recommended that the framework be used for identifying the transportation network-wide impacts of flood ‘hot-spots’ and assessment of transportation-related flood mitigation alternatives. The framework can also support disaster planning and emergency preparedness measures in preparation for major events. Examples may include contingency planning for deployment of barricades, mitigation of critical facilities, and large-scale evacuation planning. The methodology can provide useful outputs on system-wide costs of flooded roads that can be used to inform regional mitigation efforts.

Data for: Gender medicine teaching increases medical students' gender awareness: results of a quantitative online survey

Background

Gender medical knowledge is insufficiently integrated into university teaching in Germany. Gender awareness represents a key competence to integrate this knowledge into one's medical practice. This study is the first survey of the gender awareness of medical students in Germany.

Methods

From April to July 2021, a quantitative cross-sectional survey in an online format using the 'Nijmegen Gender Awareness in Medicine Scale' (2008) was conducted at four German universities (Charité Berlin, Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena, Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich, and the University of Cologne) with a varied implementation of teaching gender medicine. Students indicated their agreement or disagreement with assumptions and knowledge about the influence of gender in everyday medical practice (gender sensitivity), as well as gender role stereotypes towards patients and physicians (gender role ideology).

Results

The 750 included participants showed a relatively high gender sensitivity and low gender role stereotyping towards patients and doctors. The curricular implementation of gender medicine of the universities showed to have a significant influence on the students' gender sensitivity, as well as on their gender role stereotyping towards patients. Students who reported having taken classes in gender medicine showed significantly higher level of gender sensitivity. Cis-males showed significantly lower gender sensitivity and significantly higher gender role stereotyping.

Conclusion

Implementation of gender medicine in the medical curriculum, attending courses on gender education and one's gender have a significant impact on medical students' gender competencies. These results support the need for structural integration of gender in medical education and gender trainings at medical schools in Germany.

Testing Context-Aware Software Systems in the Automotive Domain: A Multi Vocal Literature Review Protocol and Dataset

Testing Context-Aware Software Systems in the Automotive Domain: A Multi Vocal Literature Review Protocol and Dataset

A Multi-Vocal Literature Review (MVLR) is a form of a systematic review that includes grey literature in addition to peer-review literature (Garousi, Felderer, and Mäntylä 2019). The decision to justify an MVLR is drawn from the results of recent literature reviews, in particular the recent results from (Matalonga et al. 2022) where it is shown that there is little evidence in the white literature on the approaches to testing non-academic CASS Systems.

Previous academic works (including our Quasi-Systematic Literature Reviews and Rapid Reviews) operate under the following assumptions and observations:

Assumption 1. CASS are widespread and being deployed for commercial or industrial use.

Observation 1. The software engineering and software testing communities have had time to adopt (or develop new) techniques to deal with the context and effects of testing software systems.

Observation 2. Academics have been able to work with software organizations to transfer or study the approaches used to test CASS, yet the published case studies we are aware of describe a partial picture of the overall adoption and approach of the problem.

In spite of these assumptions and the availability of systematic literature review studies, there is little evidence of how software organizations are testing CASS.

Research Goals

Aim: To uncover evidence on how the automotive industry reports their working with the dynamic testing process regarding CASS.

We use the term industry to broaden our scope to include stakeholders with an interest in the quality of CASS like NGOs, standard-setting organizations and regulation-setting organizations who can influence how software must be treated in different domains.

The following research questions convey the general interest of our enquiries. These are driven by our previous research and expectations on the sources.

RQ1 Are there sources to support the understanding and indicate directions to deal with the problem of testing CASS?

RQ2 What are the challenges of using these dynamic testing process solutions?

RQ3 How are the dynamic testing processes that deal with the context of CASS described in the sources?

Dataset

This dataset contains the following artifacts:

Testing CASS MVLR Protocol.pdf: protocol containing the methodological details of performing the MVLR

Sources Identification, Selection and Data Extraction.xlsx: spreadsheet used to record and control discovered and selected sources

Extraction_Documents.zip: compressed file containing all data collection forms filled with data extracted from the

MVLR_Analysis-Codebook.xlsx: listing of codes emerging from the collected data
