Influence of pollen dispersal and mating pattern in domestication of intermediate Wheatgrass, a novel perennial food crop

Intermediate wheatgrass (IWG) is a perennial forage grass that is currently being domesticated as a grain crop. It is a primarily wind-pollinated outcrossing species and expresses severe inbreeding depression when self-pollinated. Characterization of pollen dispersal, mating parameters, and change in genetic diversity due to pollen movement is currently lacking in IWG. In this study, we examined pollen dispersal in an IWG selection nursery by evaluating 846 progeny from 15 mother plants and traced their parentage to 374 fathers. A set of 2500 genomic loci was used to characterize the population. We assigned paternity to 769 (91%) progeny and the average number of fathers per mother plant was 37, from an average of 56 progeny examined per mother. An extensive number (80%) of pollination events occurred within 10 m of the mother plants. Pollination success was not correlated with trait attributes of the paternal genotypes. Mating system analysis confirmed that IWG is highly out-crossing and inbreeding was virtually absent. Neither genetic diversity nor the genome-estimated trait values of progeny were significantly affected by pollinator distance. The distance of pollinator in an IWG breeding nursery therefore was not found to be a major contributor in maintaining genetic diversity. These findings reveal the pollen dispersal model in IWG for the first time and its effect on genetic diversity, which will be valuable in designing future IWG breeding populations. Information generated and discussed in this study could be applied in understanding gene flow and genetic diversity of other open-pollinated species.

Resting metabolic rate of Sceloporus grammicus at intermediate and native elevations

Body maintenance energy requirements are measured as minimal metabolic rate (RMR) of inactive, postabsorptive individuals in the laboratory. For mountain-dwelling species, translocation to the laboratory can mean a change in elevation and thus oxygen pressure, which may affect metabolic rates. Here we present resting metabolic rate (RMR) of three populations of the Mesquite lizard (Sceloporus grammicus) at their native elevations (i.e., 2600, 3200 and 4100 m) and at an intermediate elevation (3100 m). Each lizard was tested at 15, 25, 30 and 35ºC. For each test RMR is given in VCO2 ml/min. Data also includes sex, snout vent length (SVL), body mass, and throat color morph.

Dataset - Assessing the Added Value of the Intermediate Complexity Atmospheric Research Model (ICAR) for Precipitation in Complex Topography

Abstract. The coarse grid spacing of global circulation models necessitates the application of downscaling techniques to investigate the local impact of a changing global climate. Difficulties arise for data sparse regions in complex topography which are computationally demanding for dynamic downscaling and often not suitable for statistical downscaling due to the lack of high quality observational data. The Intermediate Complexity Atmospheric Research Model (ICAR) is a physics-based model that can be applied without relying on measurements for training and is computationally more efficient than dynamic downscaling models. This study presents the first in-depth evaluation of multi-year precipitation time series generated with ICAR on a 4 × 4 km2 grid for the South Island of New Zealand for an eleven-year period, ranging from 2007 until 2017. It focuses on complex topography and evaluates ICAR at 16 weather stations, eleven of which are situated in the Southern Alps between 700 m MSL and 2150 m MSL. ICAR is assessed with standard skill scores and the effect of model top elevation, topography, season, atmospheric background state and synoptic weather patterns on these scores are investigated. The results show a strong dependence of ICAR skill on the choice of the model top elevation, with the highest scores obtained for 4 km above topography. Furthermore, ICAR is found to provide added value over its ERA-Interim reanalysis forcing data set for alpine weather stations, improving mean squared errors (MSE) by up to 53 % and 30 % on median. It performs similarly during all seasons with an MSE minimum during winter, while flow linearity and atmospheric stability were found to increase skill scores. ICAR scores are highest during weather patterns associated with flow perpendicular to the Southern Alps and lowest for flow parallel to the alpine range. While measured precipitation is underestimated by ICAR, these results show the skill of ICAR in a real-world application, and may be improved upon by further observational calibration or bias correction techniques.
Based on these findings ICAR shows the potential to generate downscaled fields for long term impact studies in data sparse regions with complex topography.

A set of synthetic spectral energy distributions for "diskless", intermediate-mass young stars

These models were published in conjunction with The Duration of Star Formation in Galactic Giant Molecular Clouds. I. The Great Nebula in Carina, by Povich et al. (2019). They will also be used in subsequent papers in that series.

The format of these models conforms with the standards of Robitaille (2017), so they are compatible with the python implementation of the Robitaille et al. (2007) SED fitting tool. We have pre-convolved these models with a number of useful filters, including Johnson/Bessel UBVRI, UKIRT ZYJHK, VISTA ZYJHKS, 2MASS JHKS, Spitzer/IRAC and MIPS.

A software pipeline implementing these models to constrain the age and mass distributions of young stellar populations is also publicly available.

Limitations of these models

These models produce the best results for stars more massive than the Sun and older than about 0.5 Myr. They employ the pre-main-sequence evolutionary tracks of Siess et al. (2000) and Bernasconi & Maeder (1996). Numerous modern tracks offer significant improvement in the treatment of subsolar-mass stars. In addition, the Kurucz stellar atmospheres used in these synthetic SEDs work best for Teff > 4,000 K; for cooler temperatures other models, for example the PHOENIX photospheres, may be more appropriate.

Newer evolutionary tracks covering the intermediate-mass range are now available, for example the Geneva pre-MS tracks of Haemmerlé et al. (2019). The principal innovation of these modern models is the treatment of accretion and location of the intermediate-mass stellar birthline. The coolest, most luminous models in this set are likely unphysical, representing fully-convective stars of >2 solar masses and <0.5 Myr isochronal age.
