Highly Skilled Migrant and Non-MigrantWomen and Men: How Do Differences in Quality of Employment Arise?

<p>Research shows that highly skilled migrant women often have poor quality jobs or no</p> <p>employment. This paper addresses two research gaps. First, it provides a comparative perspective</p> <p>that examines differences and commonalities in the quality of employment of four highly skilled</p> <p>groups: migrant- and non-migrant women and men. Four statistical indicators are examined to</p> <p>grasp these differences: employment rates, income, adequacy of paid work, and employment status.</p> <p>The results highlight the role of gender and country of birth: Swiss-born men experience the best</p> <p>employment quality, and foreign-born women the worst. Second, it offers a family perspective</p> <p>to study how the employment trajectories of skilled migrant women develop in time and place in</p> <p>relation to their partners&rsquo;. The qualitative life-course analysis indicates that skill advancement is more</p> <p>favourable for migrant and non-migrant men than for migrant and non-migrant women. However,</p> <p>skill advancement for migrant women depends greatly on the strategies enacted by domestic partners</p> <p>about how to divide paid employment and family work, and where to live. The statistical study draws</p> <p>on recent data from Swiss labour market surveys. The life-course analysis focuses on 77 biographical</p> <p>interviews with tertiary-educated individuals. Participatory Minga workshops are used to validate</p> <p>the study results.</p>

Understanding brain waste: Unequal opportunities for skills development between highly skilled women and men, migrants and nonmigrants

<p>Brain waste studies seldom analyse the skills development of tertiary-educated</p> <p>workers according to gender and country of origin. Combining statistical analyses,</p> <p>participatory workshops and 77 qualitative interviews on employment trajectories</p> <p>with highly skilled workers in Switzerland, I offer three contributions. An</p> <p>intersectional perspective reveals unequal opportunities of skills development:</p> <p>Swiss-born men have the highest rates of employment, income and jobs commensurate</p> <p>with their education, followed by foreign-born men, then Swiss-born women</p> <p>and lastly foreign-born women. Second, a multiscalar perspective shows how actions</p> <p>by individuals, families, employers and the state favour or constrain skills advancement</p> <p>among women and men. Individual perceptions of gender roles and unequal</p> <p>childcare responsibilities within couples constrain women&#39;s skills development. Further</p> <p>constraints are set by the state and employers&#39; policies and practices regarding</p> <p>migration, childcare, taxation and hiring. Third, a spatial&ndash;temporal perspective unveils</p> <p>that gender inequalities arise at particular moments (migration and childbirth) and</p> <p>places (lacking childcare services and limited employment).</p>

Data from: Timing of spring departure of long distance migrants correlates with previous year's conditions at their breeding site

<p>Precise timing of the migration is crucial for animals targeting seasonal resources at locations encountered across their annual cycle. Upon departure, long distance migrants need to anticipate unknown environmental conditions at their arrival site, and they do zkzdsxso with their internal annual clock. Here, we tested the hypothesis that long distance migrants synchronize their circannual clock according to the phenology of their environment during the breeding season, and therefore adjust their spring departure date according to the conditions encountered at their breeding site the year before. To this end, we used tracking data of Eurasian curlews from different locations and combined movement data with satellite-extracted green-up dates at their breeding site. Spring departure date was better explained by green-up date of the previous year, while arrival date at the breeding site was better explained by latitude and longitude of the breeding site, suggesting that other factors impacted migration timing <i>en route</i>. On a broader temporal scale, our results suggest that long distance migrants may be able to adjust their migration timing to advancing spring dates in the context of climate change. </p>

Data for: Optimizing health and nutrition status of migrant construction workers consuming multiple micronutrient fortified rice in Singapore

<p class="MsoNormal">140 Male migrant workers aged 20–51 years of either Bangladeshi or Indian ethnicity from a single dormitory in Singapore volunteered to participate in the study. In total, 133 blood samples were taken at the start of the study and were used to assess vitamin B12, hemoglobin, ferritin, folate, and zinc status; a sub-sample underwent for homocysteine testing. Anthropometric measurements and vital signs, including height, weight, and blood pressure were recorded before and after the intervention.</p>
