Vision and mission statements in pharmaceutical industry: Evidence from content analysis perspectives

<p><strong>Background:</strong> Recently, the growth of pharmaceutical sector in Nigeria are challenged by competitive and dynamic environment. There is a strategic planning process that the organisation needs to use to achieve the pre-determined objectives. This study aimed to determine the vision and mission statements of the pharmaceutical industries which affects their growth and performance outcomes.</p> <p><strong>Methods:</strong> To accomplish this study, a sample of 20 Top Pharmaceutical Companies in Nigeria was analyzed using excel spreadsheet to draw out the vision and mission components. And the list was obtained from Pharmaapproach, Pharmaceutical and Medical Manufacturing Companies in Nigeria as well as InfoGuide Nigeria.</p> <p><strong>Results:</strong> The findings examined that the 20 pharmaceutical firms do have recurring vision and mission statements that are published in their various corporate websites. The industries&rsquo; vision statements shows the survival; growth and profitability concern; technology; products and services; markets; philosophy; concern of employees; customers; self-concept and; concern for public image while the mission statement fulfill the components of statement of purpose; customer; products and services; location/market; core technology; concern for growth and profit; philosophy value; self-concept; concern for public image; concern for shareholders and concern for employees.</p> <p><strong>Conclusions:</strong> The study recommends that components of vision and mission statements of pharmaceutical industries have to be consistent, strategically-crafted, well-organized and established. Vision statements have a strategic future plan for an industry and how target goals of the firm will be met. Mission statements, however, is an effectiveness of work done in the industry They determine the daily task that is being carried out, and what direction the firm is heading towards to achieve the specific vision of the industry. The impact of pharmaceutical form and simulated side effects in an open-label-placebo RCT for improving psychological distress in highly stressed students (Open Data and Open Materials)

<p>&nbsp; Open-label placebo (OLP) may be utilized to reduce psychological distress. Yet, potential contextual effects have not been explored. We investigated the impact of pharmaceutical form and the simulation of side effects in a parallel group RCT (DRKS00030987). A sample of 177 highly stressed university students at risk of depression were randomly assigned by computer generated tables to a one-week intervention with active or passive OLP nasal spray or passive OLP capsule or a no-treatment control group. After the intervention, groups differed significantly in depressive symptoms but not regarding other outcomes of psychological distress (stress, anxiety, sleep quality, somatization), well-being or treatment expectation. OLP groups benefitted significantly more compared to the no-treatment control group (<em>d</em>=.40), OLP nasal spray groups significantly more than the OLP capsule group (<em>d</em>=.40) and the active OLP group significantly more than the passive OLP groups (<em>d</em>=.42). Interestingly, before intervention, most participants, regardless of group assignment, believed that the OLP capsule would be most beneficial. The effectiveness of OLP treatments seems to be highly influenced by the symptom focus conveyed by the OLP rationale. Moreover, pharmaceutical form and simulation of side effects may modulate efficacy, while explicit treatment expectation seems to play a minor role.</p>

Baltimore Ecosystem Study: Pharmaceutical concentrations for core sites in Gwynns Falls and Baisman Run

Water samples from one year of weekly samples at the Baltimore Ecosystem Study core stream sites were analyzed to measure concentrations of 92 different pharmaceutical concentrations. Note that none of the sites sampled in this dataset receive effluent from wastewater treatment plants (a common source of pharmaceutical contamination). In Baisman Run, sewage is treated by onsite systems, while in the Gwynns Falls watershed, sewage is piped across the watershed boundary and treated elsewhere.

Two markdown files contains code to pre-process other data and to analyze grab samples from BES streams collected weekly from 2 Nov 2017 through 15 Nov 2018 and analyzed for 92 target pharmaceuticals. Briefly, the analyses here: A) examine spatial and temporal variability in pharmaceutical detections and concentrations among 7 BES watersheds, and B) combine measured concentrations at the watershed outlet (GFCP) with USGS streamflow data to estimate annual loads of pharmaceuticals by resampling or by interpolating concentrations over the discharge record.

Data from: Pharmaceutical pollution alters the cost of bacterial infection and its relationship to pathogen load

<p><span>The relationship between pathogen proliferation and the cost of infection experienced by a host drives the ecology and evolution of host-pathogen dynamics. While environmental factors can shape this relationship, there is currently limited knowledge on the consequences of emerging contaminants, such as pharmaceutical pollutants, for the commonly observed trade-off between a pathogen's growth within the host and the damage it causes, termed its virulence. Here, we investigated how exposure to fluoxetine (Prozac), a commonly detected psychoactive pollutant, could alter this key relationship using the water flea <em>Daphnia magna</em> and its bacterial pathogen <em>Pasteuria ramosa </em>as a model system. Across a variety of fluoxetine concentrations, we found that fluoxetine shaped the damage a pathogen caused, such as the reduction in fecundity or intrinsic growth experienced by infected individuals, but with minimal change in average pathogen spore loads. Instead, fluoxetine modified the relationship between the degree of pathogen proliferation and its virulence, with both the strength of this trade-off and the component of host fitness most affected varying by fluoxetine concentration and host genotype. Our study underscores the potential for pharmaceutical pollution to modify the virulence of an invading pathogen, as well as the fundamental trade-off between host and pathogen fitness, even at the trace amounts increasingly found in natural waterways. </span></p>

Raw Data for the article: Efficacy of Three Commercial Disinfectants in Reducing Microbial Surfaces' Contaminations of Pharmaceuticals Hospital Facilities

<p>To evaluate and validate the efficacy of disinfectants used in our cleaning procedure, in order to reduce pharmaceutical hospital surfaces&#39; contaminations, we tested the action of three commercial disinfectants on small representative samples of the surfaces present in our hospital cleanrooms. These samples (or coupons) were contaminated with selected microorganisms for the validation of the disinfectants. The coupons were sampled before and after disinfection and the microbial load was assessed to calculate the Log<sub>10</sub>&nbsp;reduction index. Subsequently, we developed and validated a disinfection procedure on real surfaces inside the cleanrooms intentionally contaminated with microorganisms, using approximately 10<sup>7</sup>-10<sup>8</sup>&nbsp;total colony forming units per coupon. Our results showed a bactericidal, fungicidal, and sporicidal efficacy coherent to the acceptance criteria suggested by United States Pharmacopeia 35 &lt;1072&gt;. The correct implementation of our cleaning and disinfection procedure, respecting stipulated concentrations and contact times, led to a reduction of at least 6 Log<sub>10</sub>&nbsp;for all microorganisms used. The proposed disinfection procedure reduced the pharmaceutical hospital surfaces&#39; contaminations, limited the propagation of microorganisms in points adjacent to the disinfected area, and ensured high disinfection and safety levels for operators, patients, and treated surfaces.</p>

Degradation of pharmaceuticals using the hybrid ozonation-filtration system

<p>The hybrid ozonation-membrane filtration unit allows the simultaneous treatment of the contaminated water with ozone and micro- and nano-filtration (MF/NF) under controlled conditions using commercial single tubular ceramic membranes with an inside-out operation. In total, four commercial ceramic (CM) membranes with different compositions and pore sizes were selected. The composition of the selected membranes is given below</p> <ul> <li>TiO<sub>2</sub>/ZrO<sub>2</sub> composition of three different pore sizes: 50-, 150-, and 300 kDa MWCO) and</li> <li>TiO<sub>2</sub>/ TiO<sub>2</sub>+ZrO<sub>2</sub> composition of one pore size (0.200 &mu;m MWCO).</li> </ul> <p>The files contain information on the degradation of the pharmaceuticals using the different membranes under the three surface modifications; CeO2, CeTiOx and CeO2+CeTiOx.</p> <p>Permeability tests have been performed on all four membranes. The filtration unit can operate from 0.3 -1.5 bar pressure with a permeability flow ranging from 200 - 1900 L.m<sup>-2</sup>.h<sup>-1</sup> at 1 bar, starting from the lowest molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) membrane (50 kDa) and moving to the higher (0,200 &mu;m) one.</p>

Degradation of pharmaceuticals in batch experiments with ozone and nanoparticles

<p>The catalytic activity of five different nanoparticles (NPs), &alpha;-Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>, &gamma;-Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>, Mn<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>, CeO<sub>2</sub>, and TiO<sub>2</sub> with different particle sizes during ozonation was examined, and the transferred ozone dose (TOD) required for the degradation of the emerging compounds was defined.</p> <p>Data show the degradation of the micropollutants in batch experiments. We studied the degradation of pharmaceuticals in milliQ in the presence or not of NP (C=0.5 g/L). The initial concentration of the pollutants was 10 &mu;M and the added ozone doses ranged from 0, 10, 20, 50, 75, 100, 150, and 200 &mu;M. Bottles of 240 mL working volume were left to react at ambient temperature for four hours after ozone addition, and samples were collected, filtrated through a 0.2 &mu;M nylon filter, and finally, analyzed in the HPLC. Residual ozone, if any, was determined by the indigo method.</p>
