Data from: Mutation rate dynamics in a bacterial population reflect tension between adaptation and genetic load
Mutations are the ultimate source of heritable variation for evolution. Understanding how mutation rates themselves evolve is thus essential for quantitatively understanding many evolutionary processes. According to theory, mutation rates should be minimized for well-adapted populations living in stable environments, whereas hypermutators may evolve if conditions change. However, the long-term fate of hypermutators is unknown. Using a phylogenomic approach, we found that an adapting Escherichia coli population that first evolved a mutT hypermutator phenotype was later invaded by two independent lineages with mutY mutations that reduced genome-wide mutation rates. Applying neutral theory to synonymous substitutions, we dated the emergence of these mutations and inferred that the mutT mutation increased the point-mutation rate by ~150-fold, while the mutY mutations reduced the rate by ~40-60%, with a corresponding decrease in the genetic load. Thus, the long-term fate of the hypermutators was governed by the selective advantage arising from a reduced mutation rate as the potential for further adaptation declined.

Stillness Under Tension for Myo+Bela Quartet
<p>Stillness Under Tension is a quartet standstill work for Myo gesture control armband and Bela embedded music platform. Humans are incapable of standing completely still due to breathing and other involuntary micromotions. This work explores the expressive space of standing still through an inverse action-sound mapping: less movement leads to more sound. The Myo is used to measure the performers movement, and the muscle activity in their forearm which they can use--both voluntarily and involuntarily--to control a synthesised sound world. This musical space is defined separately for each performer by their physical position.</p> <p>This video is of the premiere performance in November 2017 at "MusicLab vol.1: Biophysical Music", Escape, Ole Johan Dahls has, Oslo, Norway.</p> <p><a href="http://www.ub.uio.no/english/courses-events/events/ureal/inf/171123MusicLab.html">Event: http://www.ub.uio.no/english/courses-events/events/ureal/inf/171123MusicLab.html</a></p> <p>Video and Production Credits (UiO Science Library Team):</p> <ul> <li>Dag Backer</li> <li>Kyrre Traavik Låberg</li> <li>Dan Michael Olsen Heggø</li> <li>Ivar Haugaløkken Stangeby</li> <li>Solveig Isis Sørbø</li> </ul> <p> </p>
Data from: Incompressible fluid plays a mechanical role in the development of passive muscle tension
Over short time scales, muscle fibres maintain a nearly constant volume of intracellular fluid. This fluid is essential to normal biochemical function, but its role in determining the mechanical properties of muscle has been considered in only a few theoretical analyses. Here we investigate the mechanical role of fluid in a fundamental property of muscle, its development of passive tension in response to stretch. We test a model of muscle structure in which incompressible fluid directly influences passive tension by constraining the geometry of intramuscular connective tissues. This interaction is demonstrated using a simple physical model of muscle morphology comprising a fluid-filled bladder wrapped by helical fibres. The behaviour of the model is compared with that of isolated bullfrog muscle subjected to an osmotic perturbation of intracellular fluid volume. Increasing muscle volume by 40% resulted in 69% increased passive tension, occurring in a manner consistent with the behaviour of the model. These observations support the notion that the interaction of connective tissues with the muscle fibres they surround influences the mechanical behaviour of whole muscles, and highlight the role of fluid as a mechanical component of muscle.
