Documentation of Aquatic Beetles in Newtown Ecopark, North 24 Parganas, West Bengal, India (2023-2024)

The publication titled "Documentation of Aquatic Beetles in Newtown Ecopark, North 24 Parganas, West Bengal, India (2023-2024)" has been published by the Nature Mates Nature Club. This publication is a component of the WBHIDCO Pakhibitan Project, centered on the Ecopark located in Newtown, North 24 Parganas, West Bengal, India.

The study area encompasses a total land area of 480 acres(including a 104 acres waterbody with an island in the middle), comprising a varied array of microhabitats. These microhabitats consist of grassland, a mixed forest containing tree species such as Arjuna, Rain tree, Sal, Mahua, Simul, and Babul within the designated "rainforest" region. Additionally, the study area includes fruit trees, flowering trees, vegetable plants, bushes, and shrubs. Furthermore, there is a designated garden area known as the "Butterfly Garden," which primarily consists of shrubs and herbs.

In addition to this, there exists a grassland region within the "formal garden" and "Golfarena." Located on a periphery of the park, there exists a diminutive expanse of wetland referred to as Pakhibitan, characterized by the presence of cattails, colloquially known as 'hogla' among the indigenous populace. Located opposite the park lies a substantial body of freshwater, encompassing an approximate surface area of 104 acres. In addition to the natural water bodies, the park also features several artificial water bodies that have been created by human intervention. Kolkata experiences four distinct seasons, namely summer, monsoon, winter, and autumn. The annual temperature exhibits a range of 43°C to 9°C. The annual average precipitation is 1400mm. The soil type in this area is classified as alluvial due to its geographical location within the Indo-Gangetic plain.

Various parameters were recorded during the survey, these are pH, TDS, EC, salinity and DO. pH recorded was from 7 to 11. TDS was 283 ± 10 ppm. With EC 566 ± 20 μs/cm, DO was 6.12 ± 1.28 mg/l. Salinity was 0% and remained same throughout the study period

The dataset presented here comprises a record of aquatic beetles documented during a biodiversity survey conducted over the period spanning from april 2023 to march2024.

All species have been identified at either the species or genus level. A comprehensive tally of 13 species was documented belonging to 3 separate families under order coleoptera

Resource Contacts

Name: Biplob Kr. Rapid Documentation Avifaunal Diversity of Buxa Tiger Reserve, Alipurduar, West Bengal, India

The dataset “Rapid Documentation Avifaunal Diversity of Buxa Tiger Reserve, Alipurduar, West Bengal, India” is published by Nature Mates Nature Club

Buxa Tiger Reserve is a tiger reserve and national park lies in the Alipurduar district of northern West Bengal, India, covering an area of 760 km2.

Buxa Tiger Reserve was created in 1983 as the 15th tiger reserve in India. In 1986, Buxa Wildlife Sanctuary constituted over 314.52 km2 of the reserve forests. In 1991, 54.47 km2 was added to Buxa Wildlife Sanctuary. A year later, in 1992, the Government of West Bengal declared its intentions to constitute a national park over 117.10 km2 of the Buxa Wildlife Sanctuary. State government finally declared the national park with notification No.3403-For/11B-6/95 dt. 05.12.1997.

Buxa Tiger Reserve(BTR) lies in Alipurduar district of West Bengal. Its northern boundary runs along the international border with Bhutan

It is the easternmost extension of extreme bio-diverse North-East India and represents highly endemic Indo-Malayan region. The fragile "Terai Eco-System" constitutes a part of this reserve. The Phibsoo Wildlife Sanctuary of Bhutan is contiguous to the north of BTR. Manas National Park lies on east of BTR. BTR, thus, serves as an international corridor for Asian elephant migration between India and Bhutan. To the south-west, the Chilapata Forests form an elephant corridor to the Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary.

The forest type of the reserve includes : Northern dry deciduous, Eastern Bhabar and Terai sal, East Himalayan moist mixed deciduous forest, Sub-Himalayan secondary wet mixed forest, Eastern sub-montane semi-evergreen forest, Northern tropical evergreen forest, East Himalayan subtropical wet hill forest, Moist sal savannah, Low alluvium, Savannah woodland.(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buxa_Tiger_Reserve, http://www.wildbengal.com/buxa.php).The main species constitutes trees like Sal, Champ, Gamar, Simul, Chikrasi.

The climate of the reserve is mostly humid subtropical with hot summers and cool winters. The monsoon season begins in June and lasts until September, bringing heavy rainfall to the region. (https://www.studyiq.com/articles/buxa-tiger-reserve/)

So far 352 species of trees, 133 species of shrubs, 189 species of herbs, 108 species of climbers, 144 species of orchids, 46 species of grasses,16 species of sedges, 6 species of canes and 4 species of bamboos have been reported. Buxa has a good faunal diversity. As many as 68 species of mammals, 41 species of reptiles, more than 246 species of birds, 4 species of Amphibians along with 103 species of fishes and around 500 species of insects have been recorded.(https://ntca.gov.in/assets/uploads/briefnote/buxa.pdf)

This dataset enlists all the birds identified during a biodiversity survey conducted in the year 2016

Species or genus-level identifications have been made for every species. There are bird species total, with records of them in different families and different orders.

Resource contacts

Name: Arjan Basu Roy

Position: Secretary

Organization: Nature Mates-Nature Club

Address: 6/7 Bijoygarh Kolkata-700032

Email: basuroyarjan@gmail.com

Orcid : https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9872-3562

Home page: http://www.naturematesindia.org/

Name: Tarak Samanta

Position: Research Associate

Organization: Nature Mates-Nature Club

Address: 6/7 Bijoygarh Kolkata-700032

Email: taraksamanta995@gmail.com

Orcid : https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6809-0549

Home page: http://www.naturematesindia.org/

Name: Rishin Basu Roy

Position: Researcher

Organization: Nature Mates-Nature Club

Address: 6/7 Bijoygarh Kolkata-700032

Email: wildrishin@gmail.com

Orcid : https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9638-818X

Home page: http://www.naturematesindia.org/

Name: Nivedita Sengupta

Position: Intern

Organization: Nature Mates-Nature Club

Address: 6/7 Bijoygarh Kolkata-700032

Email: niveditasngpta.ns@gmail.com

Orcid : https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1085-7385

Home page: http://www.naturematesindia.org/

Name: Lina Chatterjee

Position: Research Associate

Organization: Nature Mates-Nature Club

Address: 6/7 Bijoygarh Kolkata-700032

Email: lina.linachatterjee@gmail.com

Orcid : https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5626-5046

Home page: http://www.naturematesindia.org/

Name: Vijay Barve

Position: Research Advisor

Organization: Nature Mates-Nature Club

Address: 6/7 Bijoygarh Kolkata-700032

Email: vijay.barve@gmail.com

Orcid : https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4852-2567

Home page: http://www.naturematesindia.org/

Rapid Documentation Of Avifaunal Diversity of Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary, Darjeeling, West Bengal, India

The dataset “Rapid Documentation Of Avifaunal Diversity of Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary, Darjeeling, West Bengal, India” is published by Nature Mates Nature Club

The establishment of the Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary took place in 1915 within the Darjeeling District of West Bengal, India. The term 'Senchal' denotes 'The Hill of Damp and Mist', therefore leading to the designation of the refuge as the "Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary". The aforementioned wildlife sanctuary holds the distinction of being among the oldest in India, encompassing a total land area of 38.6 square kilometers.

The central region of the Sanctuary maintains a consistently low temperature throughout all seasons. The months of July and August are characterized by the occurrence of monsoon in the region. The central region of the sanctuary experiences an annual precipitation range of 2500 - 3000 mm. A significant volume of water is discharged through the fountains and slopes originating from the elevated region of the Sanctuary, ultimately flowing into the Teesta River in the east and the Balason River in the west. The soil is unconsolidated, young, and of the Mountainous loamy type, with some sands mixed in on the upper part. The Kurseong region is characterized by a soil composition consisting primarily of alluvial mixtures, which provides favorable conditions for the establishment and development of many tree species.

The sanctuary comprises a harmonious integration of both natural and man-made woodlands, seamlessly intertwined

Barking deer, Wild boar, Himalayan black bear, Indian leopard, Jungle cat, Rhesus macaque, Assamese macaque, Himalayan flying squirrel are some of the mammalian species that inhabit the area along with many others.

In addition, this sanctuary exhibits a significant abundance of avian species.

The dataset is a complete compilation of bird species identified during a biodiversity study conducted in the year 2017.

All species have been classified and identified at either the species or genus taxonomic level. There is a diverse assemblage of 109 avian species, with each species being systematically classified within various 44 families and 12 orders.

Resource Contacts

Name: Arjan Basu Roy

Position: Secretary

Organization: Nature Mates-Nature Club

Address: 6/7 Bijoygarh Kolkata-700032

Email: basuroyarjan@gmail.com

Orcid : https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9872-3562

Home page: http://www.naturematesindia.org/

Name: Tarak Samanta

Position: Research Associate

Organization: Nature Mates-Nature Club

Address: 6/7 Bijoygarh Kolkata-700032

Email: taraksamanta995@gmail.com

Orcid : https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6809-0549

Home page: http://www.naturematesindia.org/

Name: Rishin Basu Roy

Position: Researcher

Organization: Nature Mates-Nature Club

Address: 6/7 Bijoygarh Kolkata-700032

Email: wildrishin@gmail.com

Orcid : https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9638-818X

Home page: http://www.naturematesindia.org/

Name: Nivedita Sengupta

Position: Intern

Organization: Nature Mates-Nature Club

Address: 6/7 Bijoygarh Kolkata-700032

Email: niveditasngpta.ns@gmail.com

Orcid : https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1085-7385

Home page: http://www.naturematesindia.org/

Name: Lina Chatterjee

Position: Research Associate

Organization: Nature Mates-Nature Club

Address: 6/7 Bijoygarh Kolkata-700032

Email: lina.linachatterjee@gmail.com

Orcid : https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5626-5046

Home page: http://www.naturematesindia.org/

Name: Vijay Barve

Position: Research Advisor

Organization: Nature Mates-Nature Club

Address: 6/7 Bijoygarh Kolkata-700032

Email: vijay.barve@gmail.com

Orcid : https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4852-2567

Home page: http://www.naturematesindia.org/

Estimation of non-health Gross Domestic Product (NHGDP) loss due to COVID-19 deaths in West Bengal, India

This study estimates the economic losses (GDP), particularly the impact of COVID-19 deaths on non-health components of GDP in West Bengal state. The NHGDP losses were evaluated using cost-of-illness approach. Future NHGDP losses were discounted at 3%. Excess death estimates by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and Global Burden of Disease (GBD) were used. Sensitivity analysis was carried out by varying discount rates and Average Age of Death (AAD).

21,532 deaths in West Bengal since 17th March 2020 till 31st December 2022 decreased the future NHGDP by $0.92 billion. Nearly 90% of loss was due to deaths occurring in above 30 years age-group. The majority of the loss was borne among the 46–60 years age-group. The NHGDP loss/death was $42,646, however, the average loss/death declined with a rise in age. The loss increased to $9.38 billion and $9.42 billion respectively based on GBD and WHO excess death estimates. The loss increased to $1.3 billion by considering the lower age of the interval as AAD. At 5% and 10% discount rates, the losses reduced to $0.769 billion and $0.549 billion respectively.

Results from the study suggest that COVID-19 contributed to major economic loss in West Bengal. The mortality and morbidity caused by COVID-19, the substantial economic costs at individual and population levels in West Bengal, and probably across India and other countries, is another argument for better infection control strategies across the globe to end the impact of this epidemic.
