Nanoscale zero-valent iron loaded vermiform expanded graphite for the removal of Cr (VI) from aqueous solution

<p><span>Cr (VI)</span><span> is indispensable in industrial manufacturing, and its extensive use leads to severe heavy-metal pollution in the water environment around people, posing a </span><span>great</span><span> danger to physical health and living environment of multitudinous organisms. Expanded graphite (EG) is considered as a typical material for adsorption, while nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) can be applied to degrade and sedimentate various organic or inorganic pollutants. In this study, a simultaneous collaboration of EG and nZVI is carried out, with the investigation on the influence of different test conditions for adsorption performances. These findings demonstrate that nZVI@EG manifests favorable adsorptive performance on the removal of hexavalent chromium efficiently. nZVI, acted as an electron donor, is supposed to reduce Cr(VI) to Cr(III), turning itself into iron oxide or hydroxide. The whole process is an exothermic reaction, accompanying chemical reduction and physical adsorption. And Cr(III) is fastened on the appearance by deposition of chromium hydroxide or ferrochromium complex precipitation, which greatly reduces the total chromium content in the aqueous solution. Herein, as a new composite adsorbent, nZVI@EG shows promising prospects of practical applications in water contamination and environmental remediation.</span></p>

MultiEURLEX - A multi-lingual and multi-label legal document classification dataset for zero-shot cross-lingual transfer

<p>The dataset is published with:<br> <br> <em>MultiEURLEX - A multi-lingual and multi-label legal document classification dataset for zero-shot cross-lingual transfer. Ilias Chalkidis, Manos Fergadiotis, and Ion Androutsopoulos. Proceedings of the&nbsp;2021&nbsp;Conference on&nbsp;Empirical Methods in Natural Language Processing. 2021. Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.</em><br> <br> <strong>Documents: </strong>MultiEURLEX&nbsp;comprises 65k EU&nbsp;in 23 official EU languages. Each EU&nbsp;law has been annotated with EUROVOC&nbsp;concepts (labels) by the Publication Office of EU. Each EUROVOC&nbsp;label ID is associated with a Label descriptor, e.g., [60, `agri-foodstuffs&#39;], &nbsp;[6006, `plant product&#39;], [1115, `fruit&#39;]. The descriptors are also available in 23 languages. Chalkidis et al. (2019) published a&nbsp;monolingual&nbsp;(English) version of this dataset, called EURLEX57K, comprising 57k EU&nbsp;laws with the originally assigned gold labels.</p> <p><strong>Languages: </strong>MultiEURLEX&nbsp;covers 23 languages from 7 families. EU&nbsp;laws are published in all official EU&nbsp;languages, except for Irish for resource-related reasons&nbsp;(Read more:&nbsp;https://europa.eu/european-union/about-eu/eu-languages_en).&nbsp;This wide coverage makes the dataset a valuable testbed for cross-lingual transfer. All languages use the Latin script, except for Bulgarian (Cyrillic script) and Greek.</p> <p><strong>Multi-granular Labeling: </strong>EUROVOC<strong>&nbsp;</strong>has eight levels of concepts. Each document is assigned one or more concepts (labels). If a document is assigned a concept, the ancestors and descendants of that concept are typically not assigned to the same document. The documents were originally annotated with concepts from levels 3 to 8. &nbsp;We created three alternative sets of labels per document, by replacing each assigned concept by its ancestor from levels 1, 2, or 3, respectively. Thus, we provide four sets of gold labels per document, one for each of the first three levels of the hierarchy, plus the original sparse label assignment.</p> <p><strong>Supported Tasks:&nbsp;</strong>Similarly to EURLEX&nbsp;(Chalkidis et al., 2019), MultiEURLEX&nbsp;can be used for legal topic classification, a multi-label classification task where legal documents need to be assigned concepts (in our case, from EUROVOC) reflecting their topics. Unlike EURLEX57K, however, MultiEURLEX&nbsp;supports labels from three different granularities (EUROVOC&nbsp;levels). More importantly, apart from monolingual (one-to-one) experiments, it can be used to study cross-lingual transfer scenarios, including one-to-many&nbsp;(systems trained in one language and used in other languages with no training data), and many-to-one&nbsp;or many-to-many&nbsp;(systems jointly trained in multiple languages and used in one or more other languages).</p> <p><strong>Data Split and Concept Drift:&nbsp;</strong>MultiEURLEX&nbsp;is chronologically&nbsp;split in training (55k, 1958-2010), development (5k, 2010-2012), test (5k, 2012-2016) subsets, using the English documents. The test subset contains the same 5k documents in all 23 languages. The development subset also contains the same 5k documents in 23 languages, except Croatian. Croatia is the most recent EU&nbsp;member (2013); older laws are gradually translated.&nbsp;For the official languages of the seven oldest member countries, the same 55k training documents are available; for the other languages, only a subset of the 55k training documents is available.&nbsp;Compared to EURLEX57K&nbsp;(Chalkidis et al., 2019), MultiEURLEX&nbsp;is not only larger (8k more documents) and multilingual; it is also more challenging, as the chronological split leads to temporal real-world concept drift&nbsp;across the training, development, test subsets, i.e., differences in label distribution and phrasing, representing a realistic temporal generalization&nbsp;problem (Huang and Paul, 2019; Lazaridou et al., 2021). Recently, S&oslash;gaard et al. (2021) showed this setup is more realistic, as it does not overestimate real performance, contrary to random splits (Gorman and Bedrick, 2019).</p>

An assessment of energy system transformation pathways to achieve net-zero carbon dioxide emissions in Switzerland. Supplementary Information Assumptions and Results

<p>This dataset accompanies the corresponding article in Communications Earth and Environment. It contains the key assumptions used in the energy system modelling with the Swiss TIMES energy systems model (STEM) for assessing net-zero carbon dioxide emissions scenarios for Switzerland. In addition, contains extensive results from STEM for each one of the core scenarios and variants assessed in the study.</p> <p>The following files are contained in this repository:</p> <ul> <li><strong>Supplementary Data 1</strong>: This is the EXCEL file &quot;Supplementary_Information_Assumptions.xslx&quot; which contains key assumptions of the long-term scenarios assessed with STEM. These include among others: the major energy and climate policies in each scenario, the economic and demographic assumptions, key drivers for the residential energy demand (e.g., floor reference area or appliances), key drivers for the energy demand in the services sectors (e.g., Gross Value Added or floor area), key drivers for the energy demand in industry (e.g., production index or Gross Value Added), mobility demands, energy import prices, hourly electricity import prices, net transfer capacities, domestic sustainable renewable resource potentials, energy supply and demand technologies costs and efficiencies</li> <li><strong>Supplementary Data 2</strong>: This is the EXCEL file &quot;Supplementary_Information_Results.xlsx&quot; which contains energy balances from the baseline and the net-zero CO<sub>2</sub> emissions scenarios. Data for: Sub-zero temperatures and large-scale weather patterns induce tooth damage in Icelandic arctic foxes

<p><span>Tooth damage in carnivores can reflect shifts in both diet and feeding habits, and in large carnivores it is associated with increased bone consumption. Variation in tooth condition in Icelandic arctic foxes, a mesocarnivore, was recorded from 854 individual foxes spanning 29 years. We hypothesized that annual climatic variations, which can influence food abundance and accessibility, will influence tooth condition by causing dietary shifts toward less edible prey. We examined tooth condition in relation to four climatic predictors: mean annual winter temperature, indices of both the El Ni</span><span>ñ</span><span>o anomaly and North Atlantic subpolar gyre (SPG), and the number of rain-on-snow days (ROS). We found</span> unequivocal evidence for a strong effect of annual climate on tooth condition. <span>Teeth of Icelandic foxes were in better condition</span> <span>when </span>winter temperature<span>s were higher</span>, <span>when the </span><span>SPG</span><span> was </span>more positive, and <span>when the </span>number of <span>ROS was low. We also found </span>a substantial subregional effect with foxes from northeastern Iceland having lower tooth <span>damage</span> than those <span>from</span> <span>two</span> western sites. <span>Contradicting our original hypothesis that foxes</span> from northeastern Iceland<span>, </span>where <span>foxes are known to scavenge on </span>large mammal remains<span> (e.g., sheep and horses),</span> would show the highest tooth <span>damage, we suggest that</span> western <span>coastal </span>sites exhibited greater tooth <span>damage because</span> cold <span>winter</span> <span>temperatures </span>lower<span>ed</span> the availability of seabirds<span>,</span> causing a shift in diet toward <span>abrasive </span>marine subsidies <span>(e.g., bivalves) and </span>frozen beach wrack. <span>O</span>ur study shows that monitoring tooth breakage and wear can be a useful tool <span>for</span> evaluat<span>ing</span> the impact of climate on carnivore populations <span>and that climate change may influence the condition and fitness of carnivores in complex and potentially conflicting ways</span>.</p>

These data have been reduced with the <a href="http://github.com/scexao-org/vampires_dpp">VAMPIRES DPP</a> and also serve as a zero point reference for &quot;old&quot; VAMPIRES. Note: most of this data is taken without the SCExAO Vis PyWFS, so the wavefront error is not as good as standard VAMPIRES observations.</p>

The experimental datasets are exported by the data acquisition package QCoDeS and can be read as an xarray Dataset.
