<p>Carbon and oxygen isotope values of bulk carbonates for Castellas Fault zone and D19 fault zones, La Fare anticline (SE France).</p> <p><strong>B</strong>: bulk measurement; <strong>M</strong>: micrite value; <strong>C1, C3, C4,</strong> and <strong>C5</strong>: cement isotopic value; <strong>FR</strong>: fault rock isotopic value.</p> <p> </p> <p>To determine stable carbon and oxygen isotopes (<sup>13</sup>C and <sup>18</sup>O), 204 microsamples (< 5 mg) were drilled, 194 of them were micro-drilled from polished thin sections with an 80 μm diameter micro-sampler (Merkantec Micromill) at VU 15 Amsterdam (the Netherlands). We micro-sampled bulk rocks (57), sparitic cements (101), fault rocks (9) and micrite (27). The bulk rock values are related to a nonselective sampling giving information on the whole-rock isotopic values. These values do not capture the signature of isolated cement (Swart, 2015). Carbon and oxygen isotopic values were acquired with Thermo Finnigan DeltaCmass spectrometer equipped with a GasBench preparation device at VU Amsterdam. The internationally used standard IAEA-603, with official values of +2.46‰for <sup>13</sup>C and -2:37‰for <sup>18</sup>O, is 25 measured as a control standard. The standard deviation (SD) of the measurements is, respectively, < 0:1‰ and < 0:2‰ for <sup>13</sup>C and <sup>18</sup>O. Ten whole-rock samples were analyzed using a GasBench II connected to a Thermo Fisher Delta V Plus mass spectrometer at the FAU University (Erlangen, 30 Germany). Measurements were calibrated by assigning <sup>13</sup>C values of +1:95‰ to NBS19 and -47:3‰ to IAEA-CO9 and <sup>18</sup>O values of -2:20‰ to NBS19. All values are reported<br> in per mil relative to V-PDB.</p>

<p>Supporting dataset for the paper "Climate and atmospheric deposition effects on forest water‑use efficiency and nitrogen availability across Britain" by Guerrieri et al. 2020 Scientific Reports DOI is 10.1038/s41598-020-67562-w (<a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-020-67562-w">https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-020-67562-w</a>)</p> <p>The dataset includes carbon, oxygen and nitrogen stable isotope composition measured in tree rings for four species at twelve forests across climate and atmospheric deposition gradients in Britain. Data were used to i) investigate spatial and temporal (over 30‑years) changes in tree intrinsic water use efficiency (iWUE, i.e., the ratio between CO<sub>2</sub> assimilation - A, and stomatal conductance- g<sub>s</sub>); ii) assess the possible species-specific physiological mechanisms (changes in A and/or g<sub>s</sub>) evaluate whether sites receiving high Ndep experience increase in ecosystem N availability and N saturation (using tree-ring nitrogen isotope composition as a proxy); iv) elucidate drivers of spatial and temporal changes in the isotope-derived physiological and ecological processes (i.e., relative contribution of climate vs. changes in atmospheric CO<sub>2</sub> and nitrogen and sulfur deposition). </p> <p>The following files are available:</p> <ul> <li>CSV file including: a) Site names; b) Species; c) Latitude; d) Longitude; e) Investigated years (1980-2010); f) Measured isotope-related parameters and tree ring nitrogen %. Periphyton carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes detect agricultural stressors in low-order streams
<p>Shifts in the stable isotope signatures of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) in ecological materials have the potential to indicate environmental disturbances. This study examined the δ<sup>13</sup>C‰ and δ<sup>15</sup>N‰ ratios of stream water and periphyton from low-order streams in a landscape influenced by agricultural activities. Our key purpose was to assess the influence of best management practice (BMP) presence and age on C and N isotope values as a potential water-quality assessment. We collected stream water and periphyton from 19 streams within the Upper Delaware River watershed in New York, USA, in each of 4 management categories: 1) recently applied BMP treatments, 2) long-standing BMPs, 3) streams lacking BMPs, and 4) minimally disturbed reference streams. We sampled and analyzed water and periphyton for δ<sup>13</sup>C‰ and δ<sup>15</sup>N‰ in a repeated-measures design (BMP category ´ time) from April to November 2013. There were large seasonal differences in stream water δ<sup>13</sup>C-dissolved organic C (DIC)‰ and δ<sup>15</sup>NO<sub>3</sub>-N‰, with strong differences between reference and agricultural streams. Periphyton δ<sup>13</sup>C‰ and δ<sup>15</sup>N‰ values also differed strongly across streams draining land with agricultural activities, with 85% higher periphyton δ<sup>15</sup>N‰ signals in all agricultural categories vs reference streams. Periphyton diatom and chlorophyte taxonomic proportions showed the strongest relationship with periphyton δ<sup>13</sup>C‰ values, where diatoms were negatively associated with increasing δ<sup>13</sup>C‰. These results suggest that aqueous and periphytic stable isotopes were sensitive in detecting persistent effects of agriculture on these streams despite BMP mitigation, where nutrient (orthosphosphate, nitrite, and ammonia) levels were non-indicative. These results also suggest that BMPs may not have fully eliminated the negative impacts of agricultural stressors on water quality in impacted streams.</p>
Leaf, stem, and root stable carbon isotope ratios and gas exchange data for 452 plants
<p>This dataset contains a compilation of stable carbon isotope ratios in leaves, stems, and roots for tree saplings and associated gas exchange data. It was used in a book chapter to test whether the relationship between carbon isotope discrimination and the ratio of intercellular to ambient carbon dioxide concentrations differs between leaves and woody tissues. The book chapter is entitled 'Carbon isotope effects in relation to CO<sub>2</sub> assimilation by tree canopies' authored by Lucas A. Cernusak and Nerea Ubierna. It is part of the book entitled 'Stable Isotopes in Tree Rings' edited by Rolf T. Siegwolf, J. Renee Brooks, John Roden, and Matthias Saurer. The publisher of the book is Springer International Publishing, with publication in April 2022.</p>

Data from: Starvation effects on nitrogen and carbon stable isotopes of animals: an insight from meta-analysis of fasting experiments
Nitrogen and carbon stable isotopic compositions (δ15N and δ13C) of consumers have been used for physiological and food web studies. Previous studies have shown δ15N and δ13C values are affected by several biological and environmental factors during starvation, but the generality of the effect of starvation on δ15N and δ13C values has not yet been tested. Here, we performed a meta-analysis to evaluate the effects of starvation on δ15N and δ13C values of consumers, and the underlying factors that may explain the observed variation. The δ15N and δ13C values were calculated as the differences between the final δ15N and δ13C values of consumers (post-starvation) and the pre-starvation values on each experiment. Our meta-analysis showed a large variation in the δ15N and δ13C values of consumers (δ15N range: –0.82 to 4.30‰; mean: 0.47‰ and δ13C range: –1.92 to 2.62‰; mean: 0.01‰). The δ15N values of most consumers increased along the length of the starvation period and were influenced by nitrogen excretion and thermoregulation types, probably because differences in nitrogen metabolism and thermoregulation affect nitrogen processing and excretion rates. None of our predictor variables accounted for the variation in δ13C values, which showed both increases and decreases due to fasting. Our findings suggest that starvation results in changes in consumer δ15N values which are mainly explained by the length of the fasting period and by nitrogen and energy metabolism, but the underlying mechanisms of the starvation effects on δ13C values seem to be more complex than previously thought.

LBA-ECO CD-02 Carbon, Nitrogen, Oxygen Stable Isotopes in Organic Material, Brazil
This data set reports the measurement of stable carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen isotope ratios in organic material (plant, litter and soil samples) in forest canopy profiles and pasture (grasses and shrubs) as well as corresponding carbon and nitrogen tissue concentrations in a number of different sites across Brazil. The sampling design captured the temporal variation in rainfall over the course of several years. Carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios can act as a proxy for interpreting aspects of the carbon and nitrogen cycles in Amazonian rainforests. Data are in three comma-delimited ASCII files.
BOREAS TE-05 Leaf Carbon Isotope Data
The BOREAS group TE-05 collected measurements in the NSA and SSA on gas exchange, gas composition and tree growth. This documentation describes leaf carbon isotope data that were collected in 1993 and 1994 at the NSA and SSA OJP, OBS and NSA UBS sites. In addition, leaf carbon isotope data were collected in 1994 only at the NSA and SSA OA sites. These data were collected to provide seasonal integrated physiological information for 10 to 15 common species at these 6 BOREAS sites.
LBA-ECO CD-08 Carbon Isotopes in Belowground Carbon Pools, Amazonas and Para, Brazil
This data set contains carbon isotope signatures from soil organic matter collected from the following sites: the forests of the ZF-2 INPA reserve approximately 80 km north of the city of Manaus, Amazon; the Tapajos National Forest approximately 83 km south of the city of Santarem, Para; and the Fazenda Vitoria, a ranch near the city of Paragominas, Para. Samples from the Fazenda Vitoria were from degraded and managed pasture sites as well as mature and secondary forests. In addition,carbon isotope signatures from roots sorted by size class, hand-picked from soil pits in the Flona Tapajos and Fazenda Vitoria, are included, as are carbon isotope signatures from soil gases from samples collected at the Fazenda Vitoria. There are 4 ASCII data files with this data set.
BOREAS TE-05 Tree Ring and Carbon Isotope Ratio Data
These data include tree ring widths and cellulose carbon isotope data from coniferous trees collected at the BOREAS NSA and SSA by the BOREAS TE-05 team. Ring width data are provided for both Picea mariana and Pinus banksiana. The carbon isotope data are provided only for Pinus banksiana.
LBA-ECO CD-02 Carbon and Oxygen Isotopes in Atmospheric CO2 in the Amazon: 1999-2004
This data set reports carbon and oxygen stable isotope ratios of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) collected at several forest and pasture sites and in the free troposphere over Amazonia. There are three comma-delimited ASCII files with this data set.Atmospheric CO2 concentrations and isotope signatures were measured at ten different forest and pasture canopy sites across the states of Amazonas, Para, and Rondonia within the Brazilian Amazon between March 1999 and March 2004. Both daytime and nighttime profile samples were collected.Samples of CO2 in the troposphere were collected during aircraft flights over the Amazon/Tapajos Rivers, FLONA Tapajos, and pasture/agriculture areas during five days in May 2003 (wet season). Samples were analyzed for carbon and oxygen isotopes of atmospheric CO2. Flights ranged from low altitudes to above the diurnal tropospheric boundary layer.Measurements of carbon and oxygen stable isotope ratios of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) are a powerful indicator of large-scale CO2 exchange on land across multiple spatial scales. Stable carbon isotope composition of leaf tissue and CO2 released by respiration (delta r) can be used as an estimate of changes in ecosystem isotopic discrimination that occur in response to seasonal and interannual changes in environmental conditions, and land-use change (forest-pasture conversion). Understanding of carbon dioxide stable isotope composition can play a central role in influencing our understanding of the extent to which terrestrial ecosystems are carbon sinks.
