Data from: Brain states govern the spatio-temporal dynamics of resting-state functional connectivity
<p>Previously, using simultaneous resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and photometry-based neuronal calcium recordings in the anesthetized rat, we identified blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) responses directly related to slow calcium waves, revealing a cortex-wide and spatially organized correlate of locally recorded neuronal activity (<a href="#_ENREF_68" title="Schwalm, 2017 #1"><span>Schwalm et al., 2017</span></a>). Here, using the same techniques, we investigate two distinct cortical activity states: persistent activity, in which compartmentalized network dynamics were observed; and slow wave activity, dominated by a cortex-wide BOLD component, suggesting a strong functional coupling of inter-cortical activity. During slow wave activity we find a correlation between the occurring slow wave events and the strength of functional connectivity between different cortical areas. These findings suggest that down-up transitions of neuronal excitability can drive cortex-wide functional connectivity. This study provides further evidence that changes in functional connectivity are dependent on the brain's current state, directly linked to the generation of slow waves.</p> <p> </p>
Recipient and donor characteristics govern the hierarchical structure of heterospecific pollen competition networks
<ul> <li>Pollinator sharing can have negative consequences for plant fitness with the arrival of foreign (i.e. heterospecific) pollen, yet responses are often variable among species. Plant traits and relatedness of donor and recipient species have been suggested to drive the variations in plant fitness, but how they shape the structure of pollen competition networks has been overlooked at the community level.</li> <li>To understand the importance of reproductive traits and relatedness on the impacts of heterospecific pollen we conducted a controlled glasshouse experiment with an artificial co-flowering community. We performed 1800 reciprocal crosses by experimentally transferring 50% and 100% foreign pollen among 10 species belonging to three different plant families.</li> <li>We found a significant reduction in seed set with 50% foreign pollen for 67% of the crosses driven largely by recipient traits and the interaction between recipient-donor traits under specific circumstances of trait-matching. In general, species with shorter styles, smaller stigmas and lower pollen:ovule ratios were more impacted by foreign pollen. These traits and their differences among species led to a hierarchical (or transitive) structure of pollen competition with clear winners and losers. However, phylogenetic distance among recipient and donor species did not explain the effects.</li> <li> <i>Synthesis</i>: Our study shows that specific traits and trait combinations between donor and recipient species are important in determining fitness outcomes with heterospecific pollen deposition. Moreover, the differences in traits between species lead to a competitive structure with clear "winners" or "losers" species. The results of this study indicate the need to shift from pairwise to community level interactions to elucidate the mechanisms underlying foreign pollen impacts upon plant reproductive fitness.</li> </ul>

Strong and weak cross-sex correlations govern the quantitative-genetic architecture of social group choice in Drosophila melanogaster
<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>When genotypes differ in niche-constructing traits, genotypes are expected to differ in which environments they experience, providing a novel causal relationship between genotypes, environments, and behavior. Such genetic variation in niche construction (or, more precisely, environment construction) is predicted to be especially important for social environments, yet the quantitative-genetic parameters governing such variation is still poorly understood. Here, we examine genetic variation and cross-sex genetic correlations for social environment-constructing behaviors. We focus on whether genetic variation in patch use—the tendency to spend time near food patches where conspecifics may be present—and group-size preference—the specific group size chosen when individuals are affiliating—is correlated or decoupled across sexes in the fruit fly, <i>Drosophila melanogaster</i>. Across three choice treatments, we find genotype and sex differences in how much time individuals spend near patches, and which group sizes they prefer. We find that the genetic basis of patch use is strongly coupled across sexes, whereas the genetic basis of group-size preference is completely <i>de</i>coupled across sexes. We discuss how these findings augment and complicate our understanding of the evolutionary genetics of social behaviors.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>
Anonymised badger trapping records for government and lay vaccinator groups in England
<p>The first dataset is comprised of anonymised badger trapping records for government and lay vaccinator groups in England. This dataset only includes records from groups operating under Natural England licence. In the first dataset, each record gives details of the number of traps set by a given group at a particular location (an active badger sett or other area of badger activity) on a single trapping night. An anonymised code has been given to each group. Additional fields include organisation type (government or lay vaccinator group), operational year (how many years the group has been active), the number of traps set on a given night and the number of badgers captured (note that this value is not the same as the number of badgers vaccinated as over the course of a two night trapping event, badgers trapped on the first night may be recaptured on the second).</p> <p>The second dataset is comprised of summarised trapping data for calculation of population size (based on Lincoln Petersen estimation) from which the proportion of the population vaccinated is derived. Trapping data have been summarised for each vaccination group in a given year; a total of 35 rows are included. Fields in this dataset include the anonymised code for each vaccination group, year, the total number of badger vaccinated in that group/year combination and the fields required for calculation of the LP estimator.</p>
