Data from: Museomics help resolving the phylogeny of snowfinches (Aves, Passeridae, Montifringilla and allies)
<p>Historical specimens from museum collections provide a valuable source of material also from remote areas or regions of conflict that are not easily accessible to scientists today. With this study, we are providing a taxon-complete phylogeny of snowfinches using historical DNA from whole skins of an endemic species from Afghanistan, the Afghan snowfinch, <em>Pyrgilauda theresae</em>. To resolve the strong conflict between previous phylogenetic hypotheses, we generated novel mitogenome sequences for selected taxa and genome-wide SNP data using from ddRAD sequencing for all extant snowfinch species endemic to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) and for an extended intraspecific sampling of the sole Central and Western Palearctic snowfinch species (<em>Montifringilla nivalis</em>).</p>

Help wanted identifying hams in Swarm-E (e-POP) RRI data
<p>In the spirit of making data from the <a href="https://epop.phys.ucalgary.ca/rri/">Radio Receiver Instrument (RRI)</a> onboard <a href="http://www.esa.int/Our_Activities/Observing_the_Earth/Swarm/Swarm_trio_becomes_a_quartet">Swarm-E</a> (formally known as <a href="https://epop.phys.ucalgary.ca/">e-POP</a>) more accessible to the ham radio community via the Ham Radio Science Citizen Investigation (<a href="http://hamsci.org/about-hamsci">HamSCI</a>), we have converted RRI's data into a ".raw" format so that it can be ingested into open source software such as <a href="http://gqrx.dk/">Gqrx</a> or <a href="https://www.gnuradio.org/">GNU Radio</a>. We have done this for all RRI data related to the 2015, 2017, and 2018 ARRL Field Days.</p> <p>We encourage everyone to help us identify hams in RRI's signal. You can use the Gqrx tool discussed here, or you can use your own technique. In most cases, the monopoles are electronically configured into a crossed-diople configuration. In this configuration, RRI records I/Q samples for the two dipoles. RRI has a sampling rate of 62500.33933 Hz, and a ~40 kHz bandpass, and can be tuned to anywhere between 10 Hz and 18 MHz. More information on Swarm-E RRI can be found in the <a href="https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11214-014-0130-y">Swarm-E RRI instrument paper</a> or Gareth Perry's recent <a href="http://hamsci.org/article/field-day-cassiope-2015-results-published-radio-science">Radio Science article</a>.</p> <p><strong>Data Format</strong></p> <p>Each data file contains raw 32 bit complex I/Q samples for a given RRI dipole at a given frequency. The samples are interleaved, e.g., IQIQIQIQ... The data files do not contain any metadata. Any information regarding the time, frequency, and corresponding RRI dipole is in the file name. </p> <p><strong>Filename Format</strong></p> <p>The filename format gives information about the time and data of the recording, the tuned frequency, and which of RRI's dipoles the recording corresponds too. For example, <em>gqrx_20150628_011614_3525000_62500_RRI_Dipole1 </em>contains data recorded on Dipole 1, starting at 01:16:14 UT on June 28, 2015, at 3525000 Hz (3.525 MHz), at a sampling rate of 62500 Hz (RRI's 62500.33933 Hz sampling rate).</p> <p><strong>Gqrx</strong></p> <p>We have opted to convert the data into the .raw format so that it can be ingested into <a href="http://gqrx.dk/">Gqrx</a>. There are other ways of analyzing RRI's data; this is just one way which we felt was as easy first step. We are open to posting about other techniques on the HamSCI site as well. To help get started with Gqrx, we have developed a <a href="http://hamsci.org/resource/how-play-rri-raw-iq-file-gqrx"><em>How to play an RRI raw IQ file on Gqrx</em></a> page.</p>

<p>TEI ODD Customization for the documentation of historical corpora:</p> <p>The TEI ODD customizations map the Metamodel for Corpus Metadata (MCM) to a TEI p5 header structure for each of the objects of the classes 'Corpus', 'Document' and 'Preparation'. The MCM is realized with a subset of the TEI p5 guidelines.</p> <p>Each ODD contains further information and explanations regarding the MCM and the customization of the TEI. Additionally, for each ODD, an HTML documentation is provided.</p>
Dataset manuscript "Does it Help to Feel your Body? Evidence is Inconclusive that Interoceptive Accuracy and Sensibility Help Cope with Negative Experiences
<p>In four studies (total <em>N</em> = 534), we examined the moderating impact of Interoceptive Accuracy (i.e., IAcc, as measured with the heartbeat counting task) and Interoceptive Sensibility (IS, assessed via questionnaire) on negative affect, following social exclusion or after receiving negative feedback. Results from an integrative data analysis combining the four studies confirmed that the manipulations were successful at inducing negative affect. However, no significant interaction between mood induction (control versus negative affect induction) and interoception on mood measures was observed, and this was true both for objective (i.e., IAcc) and subjective (i.e., IS) measures of interoception. Hence, previous conclusions on the moderating impact of interoception in the relationship between mood induction and self-reported mood were neither replicated nor generalized to this larger sample. We discuss these findings in light of theories of emotion regulation as well as recent concerns raised about the validity of the heartbeat counting task. </p>
Temperature stress induces mites to help their carrion beetle hosts by eliminating rival blowflies
<p>Ecological conditions are known to change the expression of mutualisms though the causal agents driving such changes remain poorly understood. Here we show that temperature stress modulates the harm threatened by a common enemy, and thereby induces a phoretic mite to become a protective mutualist. Our experiments focus on the interactions between the burying beetle <i>Nicrophorus vespilloides</i>, an associated mite species <i>Poecilochirus carabi</i> and their common enemy, blowflies, when all three species reproduce on the same small vertebrate carrion. We show that mites compete with beetle larvae for food in the absence of blowflies, and reduce beetle reproductive success. However, when blowflies breed on the carrion too, mites enhance beetle reproductive success by eating blowfly eggs. High densities of mites are especially effective at promoting beetle reproductive success at higher and lower natural ranges in temperature, when blowfly larvae are more potent rivals for the limited resources on the carcass.</p>

Data from: How science communications can help build societal perceptions of invasive alien species and their impacts on the environment
<p>In this study, we investigated the reported beneficial aspects of the invasive alien plant species (IAPS) and argued that, over time and space, the detrimental impacts of the IAS might endanger sustainable livelihoods. The data set contains the following files:</p> <p>Data_S1.xlsx: The file contains details of 154 literature reports. From each paper, we extracted IAPS names (both as reported and standardized), taxonomic information (family and taxon rank), year, country, the scale of observation, and reported beneficial impacts. The beneficial impacts were further categorized into 13 use categories at TDWG (Taxonomic Databases Working Group) Level-1 states (in binary format - 1 indicates the IAPS use and 0 indicates not in use for the individual category).</p> <p>The Metadata_S1.pdf file contains detailed information on preparing literature records for data extraction, the data extraction process, and data organization. </p>
Data from: Helpers don't help when it's hot in a cooperatively breeding bird, the Southern Pied Babbler
<p><span>Cooperative breeding, where more than two individuals invest in rearing a single brood, occurs in many bird species globally and often contributes to improved breeding outcomes. However, high temperatures are associated with poor breeding outcomes in many species, including cooperative species. We used data collected over three austral summer breeding seasons to investigate the contribution that helpers make to daytime incubation in a cooperatively breeding species, the Southern Pied Babbler <em>Turdoides bicolor,</em> and the ways in which their contribution is influenced by temperature. </span><span>Helpers spent a significantly higher percentage of their time foraging</span><span> (41.8 ± 13.7%) and a significantly lower percentage of their time incubating (18.5 ± 18.8%) than members of the breeding pair (31.3 ± 11% foraging & 37.4 ± 15.7% incubating). In groups with only one helper, the helper's contribution to incubation was similar to that of breeders. However, helpers in larger groups contributed less to incubation, individually, with some individuals investing no time in incubation on a given observation day. Helpers significantly decrease their investment in incubation on hot days (>35.5°C), while breeders tend to maintain incubation effort as temperatures increase. Our results demonstrate that</span><span> pied babblers share the workload of incubation unequally between breeders and helpers, and this inequity is more pronounced during hot weather. These results may help to explain why recent studies have found that larger group size does not buffer against the impacts of high temperatures in this and other cooperatively breeding species.</span></p>

<p><strong>Supplementary Material</strong></p> <p><em><strong>Context</strong></em>: Software development is a knowledge-intensive activity, and its success in an organization relies deeply on knowledge sharing. Knowledge management challenges are often increased in agile environments, which involve a lot of tacit knowledge, commonly acquired through experiences and hard to be made explicit. Therefore, knowledge sharing among practitioners is crucial. However, identifying suitable experts to share specific knowledge is not trivial. It involves not only discovering the individuals with the desired knowledge but also considering other factors that may improve the expert responsiveness, such as social connections and availability. <em><strong>Objective</strong></em>: Considering the important role experts play in knowledge sharing, we decided to investigate approaches that help identify experts that can share knowledge in software development. Our goal is to provide a panorama of the existing approaches and shine a light on research opportunities. <em><strong>Method</strong></em>: We carried out a systematic literature mapping and analyzed 17 publications. <em><strong>Results</strong></em>: The results show that most approaches have relied on code repositories as a source of evidence for identifying experts and, consequently, focus on supporting developers and aiding in the codification activity. Additionally, expert identification has been mostly automated, and factors beyond possessing the desired knowledge have often been disregarded. <em><strong>Conclusion</strong></em>: Although there are several expert identification approaches, there has been a lack of concern with factors that influence reaching the most suitable expert for a specific situation (e.g., considering the characteristics of the person seeking knowledge). Moreover, there is a need for deeper reflection on how to better explore different artifacts as sources of expert evidence and how to combine them to improve expert identification.</p> <p>This package contains supplementary material of the study performed to investigate approaches that help identify experts that can share knowledge in software development. It contains:</p> <ul> <li>A spreadsheet containing raw data (research protocol, considered and selected publications, and research questions answers).</li> </ul>
