Pearl River Delta FVCOM model mangrove forests scenarios
<p>Model data presented in: De Dominicis, M., Wolf, J., van Hespen, R., Zheng, P., Hu. Z. "Mangrove forests can be an effective coastal defence in the Pearl River Delta, China", <em>Communications Earth & Environment</em> (2023).</p> <p>To explore the effects of vegetation on storm surge dynamics and currents, we used a Finite Volume Community Ocean Model implementation for the South China Sea and the Pearl River Delta and simulated Typhoon Hato (2017) one of the strongest typhoons to affect the coastal areas of the Pearl River Delta in recent decades. We numerically modelled the protection capability of the mangrove wetlands in Shenzhen Bay and in the upper estuary river branches close to Guangzhou to determine their ability to mitigate coastal flooding. Additionally, we analyzed how the effectiveness of mangroves changes under different sea level rise scenarios. </p> <p>The dataset consists of water elevation and horizontal currents for 40 model experiments (see Table 1 in De Dominicis et al, 2023).</p>
Dataset for Disordered dolomite as an unusual biomineralization product found in the center of a natural Cassis pearl
<p>Natural pearls are produced without human intervention, mainly due to various irritations from the surrounding environment to their mantle tissues. Pearls usually possess similar mineral compositions to the host shells, which means they are also dominated by aragonite and calcite. In this study, we report a natural pearl from a <em>Cassis</em> species mollusk containing granular central structures. Raman spectroscopy, laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) coupled with scanning electron microscope (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses were carried out in order to characterize the mineral composition in the center region of this pearl. Our results showed that this pearl's center was made of mostly disordered dolomite (Ca0.53Mg0.47CO3) mixing with small amount of aragonite and high magnesium-calcite. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time disordered dolomite was conclusively identified inside of a natural pearl and such information expanded our knowledge on internal growth structures and formation of natural pearls.</p>

PEARLS: Near Infrared Photometry in the JWST North Ecliptic Pole Time Domain Field
<p>We make public visible and near-infrared images and derived catalogues obtained as part of the ground-based observations targetting the North Ecliptic Pole Time Domain Field. This is one of the prime targets of the PEARLS collaboration (Windhorst+ 2023, AJ 165, 13 (https://doi.org/10.3847/1538-3881/aca163), and was designed to identify transient objects (outer Solar System objects, variable stars, Active Galactic Nuclei, Supernovae). These data complement the already extensive coverage this field has had from space and ground-based observatories ranging from hard X-rays to radio.</p>
