Data from: Variable mesophyll conductance among soybean cultivars sets a tradeoff between photosynthesis and water-use-efficiency

Photosynthetic efficiency is a critical determinant of crop yield potential, though it remains below the theoretical optimum in modern crop varieties. Enhancing mesophyll conductance, i.e. the rate of carbon dioxide diffusion from substomatal cavities to the sites of carboxylation, may increase photosynthetic and water use efficiencies. To improve water-use-efficiency mesophyll conductance should be increased without concomitantly increasing stomatal conductance. Here we partition variance in mesophyll conductance to within and among cultivar components across soybeans grown under both controlled and field conditions, and examine the covariation of mesophyll conductance with photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, water-use-efficiency and leaf mass per area. We demonstrate that mesophyll conductance varies more than 2-fold and that 38% of this variation is due to cultivar identity. As expected mesophyll conductance is positively correlated with photosynthetic rates. However, a strong positive correlation between mesophyll and stomatal conductance among cultivars apparently impedes positive scaling between mesophyll conductance and water-use-efficiency in soybean. Contrary to expectations, photosynthetic rates and mesophyll conductance both increased with increasing leaf mass per area. The presence of genetic variation for mesophyll conductance suggests there is potential to increase photosynthesis and mesophyll conductance by selecting for greater leaf mass per area. Increasing water-use-efficiency though, is unlikely unless there is simultaneous stabilizing selection on stomatal conductance.

Photosynthesis-irradiance measurements used to derive P-I relationships and to calculate primary production for each discrete sample. Samples collected aboard Palmer LTER annual cruises off the coast of the Western Antarctic Peninsula, 1991 - 1993.

Photosynthesis-irradiance measurements are used to derive P-I relationships and to calculate primary production for each discrete sample. Blue-green photosynthetron method described by Prezelin et al. (1994) were used to determine photosynthesis irradiance (P-I) relationships for collected samples. Non-linear cureve fits for the P-I data were calculated using the simplex method of Caceci & Cacheris (1984). Curve fitting provided estimates of Pmax (the light saturated rate of photosynthesis) and alpha (the affinity for photosynthesis at light-limited irradiances.

VIIRS/NPP Gross Primary Productivity and Net Photosynthesis Gap-Filled 8-Day L4 Global 500m SIN Grid V002

The NASA/NOAA Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP) Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Gross Primary Productivity (GPP) and Net Photosynthesis (PSN) Gap-Filled (VNP17A2GF) Version 2 product is a cumulative composite of GPP values based on the radiation use efficiency concept that is potentially used as inputs to data models to calculate terrestrial energy, carbon, water cycle processes, and biogeochemistry of vegetation. VNP17A2GF is an 8-day composite at 500 meters (m) spatial resolution delivered as a gridded Level 4 (L4) product in Sinusoidal projection. The VNP17A2GF will be generated at the end of each year when the entire yearly 8-day VNP15A2H is available. Hence, the gap-filled VNP17A2GF is the improved VNP17A2, which has cleaned the poor-quality inputs from 8-day Leaf Area Index and Fraction of Photosynthetically Active Radiation (LAI/FPAR) based on the Quality Control (QC) label for every pixel. If any LAI/FPAR pixel did not meet the quality screening criteria, its value is determined through linear interpolation. However, users cannot get VNP17A2GF in near-real time because it will be generated only at the end of a given year. Provided in the VNP17A2GF product are layers for GPP, PSN, along with a quality control layer. A low resolution browse image for GPP is also available for each VNP17A2GF granule.Known Issues* For complete information about known issues please refer to the [MODIS/VIIRS Land Quality Assessment website](https://landweb.modaps.eosdis.nasa.gov/knownissue?sensor=VIIRS).
