Dataset of Outlining a Novel Psychometric Model of Mental Flexibility and Affect Dynamics

<p>Theoretically, affective states have always been conceived as complex phenomena enabling individuals to respond flexibly and dynamically to environmental demands. Methodologically, the novel field of Affect Dynamics has started to analyze affective states as inherently dynamic and interdependent phenomena by focusing on how and why they fluctuate over time. Fluctuations of affective states can also be conceived as a function of individuals' ability to flexibly modulate their responses according to environmental demands. However, this ability has been sparsely investigated in different disciplines and domains, thus, engendering a plethora of terms and models. In this conceptual analysis, we first aimed to disentangle the puzzle of flexibility by outlining the distinctive cross-domain features of this concept, thus providing a novel comprehensive operationalization. We termed this novel unitary concept "mental flexibility," the general ability to variably adapt to environmental demands. Computational Psychometrics Using Psychophysiological Measures for the Assessment of Acute Mental Stress

<p>The goal of this study was to provide reliable quantitative analyses of psycho-physiological measures during acute mental stress. Acute, time-limited stressors are used extensively as experimental stimuli in psychophysiological research. In particular, the Stroop Color Word Task and the Arithmetical Task have been widely used in several settings as effective mental stressors. We collected psychophysiological data on blood volume pulse, thoracic respiration, and skin conductance from 60 participants at rest and during stressful situations. Subsequently, we used statistical univariate tests and multivariate computational approaches to conduct comprehensive studies on the discriminative properties of each condition in relation to psychophysiological correlates. The results showed evidence of a greater discrimination capability of the Arithmetical Task compared to the Stroop test. The best predictors were the short time Heart Rate Variability (HRV) indices, in particular, the Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia index, which in turn could be predicted by other HRV and respiratory indices in a hierarchical, multi-level regression analysis. Thus, computational psychometrics analyses proved to be an effective tool for studying such complex variables. They could represent the first step in developing complex platforms for the automatic detection of mental stress, which could improve the treatment.</p>

PMID: 34559189.</p> <p>Abstract</p> <p><strong>Background:&nbsp;</strong>The Self-care of Diabetes Inventory (SCODI) is a theory-based tool that measures self-care, a key strategy in the appropriate treatment of diabetes. However, despite the clinical differences between people with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM), the psychometric properties of the SCODI were only tested in mixed samples.</p> <p><strong>Purpose:&nbsp;</strong>This study aims to test the psychometric performances of the SCODI in two separate groups of adults with T1DM and T2DM.</p> <p><strong>Methods:&nbsp;</strong>This is a secondary analysis from two previous multicentre cross-sectional observational studies involving patients with T1DM (n = 181) and T2DM (n = 540). We tested dimensionality with confirmatory factor analysis and reliability with a multidimensional model-based coefficient for every scale of the SCODI: self-care maintenance, self-care monitoring, self-care management, and self-care self-efficacy.</p> <p><strong>Results:&nbsp;</strong>We found that the SCODI showed the same dimensionality, with minimal variation in factor loadings for each factor and each scale among T1DM and T2DM groups. High reliability for each scale in both groups was also found (self-care maintenance: T1DM = 0.86, T2DM = 0.83; self-care monitoring: T1DM = 0.84, T2DM = 1.00; self-care management: T1DM = 0.87, T2DM = 0.86; self-care self-efficacy: T1DM = 0.88; T2DM = 0.86).</p> <p><strong>Conclusion:&nbsp;</strong>The SCODI can be used for measuring self-care in people with T1DM, T2DM, or mixed groups using identical scoring procedures. Considering the well-known differences between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes diseases and patients&#39; characteristics, our results support the generalizability of the self-care theory on which the instrument is based.</p>

Psychometric Assessment of the GHQ-12 (General Health Questionnaire-12 items): Evaluating the reliability, validity, and comparison of factor structure in Indian undergraduate students

<p>Objectives: This study aimed to assess the reliability, validity,&nbsp; and factor structure of the GHQ-12 in the Indian undergraduate student population. Although it is the most widely used scale of psychological distress, the debate around its factor structure is still ongoing. Method: A sample of (n=432) Indian undergraduate students aged 17 to 22 years were taken. The English version of GHQ-12 was used. Internal consistency was assessed by Cronbach&#39;s alpha coefficient. Convergent validity was examined by the correlation coefficients with life satisfaction, subjective happiness, and a measure of general worry. A comparison of the different models of GHQ-12 proposed in the literature was made using Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) with maximum likelihood estimates. Result: Cronbach&rsquo;s alpha (.784) reliability coefficient indicates adequate reliability. Correlation coefficients with life satisfaction (r= -529, p&lt;.01 ), subjective happiness (r= -460, p&lt;.01), and general worry (r= .424, p&lt;.01) were also along the expected lines.Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) showed a good fit to the data (Standardized Root Mean Square Residual (SRMR) = 0.0319, Comparative Fit Index (CFI) = 0.989, Tucker Lewis Index (TLI) = 0.982, Root Mean Square of Error Approximation (RMSEA) = 0.039). Hence, the findings indicated a seven items two-factor model consisting of Social Dysfunction and Anxiety/Depression.</p>

This study aimed to develop and validate the nursing self-efficacy scale for managing cancer treatment-induced cardiotoxicity (NSS-CTC).</p> <p><strong>Data sources:&nbsp;</strong>An exploratory mixed-method study was performed by including two main phases. The first comprised the developmental tasks to generate the initial pool of items, including a literature review and a consensus meeting based on a nominal group technique. The second phase initially involved an external panel of experts in assessing the content validity of the novel scale, followed by a cross-sectional data collection to perform exploratory factor analysis by employing a multicenter and convenience sampling approach. The most plausible psychometric structure derived from the exploratory factor analysis was tested with a confirmatory factor analysis using a second data collection round on another sample enrolled with a multicenter and convenience sampling approach. Internal consistency was assessed using Cronbach&#39;s alfa.</p> <p><strong>Conclusion:&nbsp;</strong>The NSS-CTS is a novel 15-item self-report measure for assessing nurse self-efficacy in dealing with cancer treatment-related cardiotoxicity. Its two plausible domains were labeled knowledge-related self-efficacy (Cronbach&#39;s &alpha; = 0.924) and practice-related self-efficacy (Cronbach&#39;s &alpha; = 0.937); the factor analyses in both samples showed adequate fit to sample statistics. Future studies are necessary to corroborate its construct validity and assess its measurement invariance across various country contexts.</p> <p><strong>Implications for nursing practice:&nbsp;</strong>Assessing nursing self-efficacy for managing cancer treatment-induced cardiotoxicity is a promising approach for identifying educational gaps and promoting nursing competency in this particular area of cancer care.</p>

Dataset of the article "Exploring Biomarkers of Mental Flexibility in Healthy Aging: A Computational Psychometric Study"

<p>Mental flexibility (MF) has long been defined as cognitive flexibility. Specifically, it has been mainly studied within the executive functions domain. However, there has recently been increased attention towards its affective and physiological aspects. As a result, MF has been described as an ecological and cross-subject skill consisting of responding variably and flexibly to environmental cognitive-affective demands. Cross-sectional studies have mainly focused on samples composed of healthy individual and of patients with chronic conditions such as Mild Cognitive Impairment and Parkinson&rsquo;s, emphasizing their behavioral rigidity. Our study is the first to consider a sample of healthy older subjects and to outline physiological and psychological markers typical of mental flexibility, to identify functional biomarkers associated with successful aging. Our results reveal that biomarkers (respiratory and heart rate variability assessments) distinguished between individuals high vs. low in mental flexibility more reliably than traditional neuropsychological tests. This unveiled the multifaceted nature of mental flexibility composed of both cognitive and affective aspects, which emerged only if non-linear multi-variate analytic approaches, such as Supervised Machine Learning, were used.</p>

Looking at One's Self Through Facebook Increases Mental Stress: A Computational Psychometric Analysis by Using Eye-Tracking and Psychophysiology

<p>The aim of this study was to investigate if Mental Stress was superior, inferior, or equal navigating on Facebook own profile or others profiles. An experimental manipulation would invalidate the results since it would force the participants to navigate in only one condition each time. To overcome this problem, we used an eye-tracker to get clear time markers that identified the areas where the participants focused during all of the Facebook navigation. While the gazes were being recorded for 30 participants, we simultaneously recorded their psychophysiological signals, which were extracted and paired with each specific focus area. Consequently, we obtained the psychophysiological correlates of Facebook navigation for both the conditions related to &ldquo;own&rdquo; and &ldquo;others.&rdquo; The areas related to own were about the own profile (such as exploring and focusing on one&#39;s own information, posting one&#39;s own news, and similar activities). The areas related to others were about Facebook friends (e.g., exploring others&#39; profiles and reading comments). The results showed that, based on cardiovascular measures (strong measurements of psychological stress), looking at one&#39;s own profile increased mental stress level. Bayesian analyses showed that these differences between the two conditions were not due to the cognitive load or the different attentional and emotional content in the two conditions. The study posed new questions about the expression of one&#39;s self to others, and indicated potential detrimental effects of chronic stress deriving from being more oriented to the self than the others.</p>
