<p>Both the development rate and sex of sea turtle embryos depend on incubation temperature, as all species are ectotherms and show temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD). Theory predicts that selection should act on populations to optimise developmental times and primary sex ratios. In this study, we use a consistent methodology to measure development rates and model the reaction norm that defines TSD in three populations of flatback turtles (<i>Natator depressus) </i>and two populations of green turtles (<i>Chelonia mydas</i><i>) </i>that nest in Western Australia. We show that development rates vary between and within species, likely reflecting adaptation to local beach microclimates. Similarly, the parameters that define the TSD reaction norm vary between the two species, and among <i>N. depressus</i> populations, with pivotal temperatures (T<sub>PIV</sub>) varying by 1.5 °C (29.6 – 31.1 °C), and the transitional ranges of temperatures (TRT) varying by 1.4 – 3.3 °C. In contrast, we found a similar T<sub>PIV</sub> for the two <i>C. mydas </i>populations, but a wider TRT at the northernmost tropical rookery. Our findings support the view that thermal parameters in geographically-separated populations of sea turtles are broadly similar, but the variation we describe will be highly relevant for predicting how populations will respond to climate change.</p>
Data from: Female loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta L.) rarely remate during nesting season
The goal of this study was to assess the consequences of single versus multiple paternity by identifying paternity of clutches per female to identify if there were detectable costs or benefits. Multiple mating can occur when the benefits of mating outweigh the costs, but if costs and benefits are equal, no pattern is expected. Previous research on loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) populations found male-biased breeding sex ratios and multiple mating by many females nesting in southwestern Florida. A sample of nesting loggerhead females who laid more than one nest over the course of the season and a subset of their hatchlings were examined from 36 clutches in 2016 on Sanibel Island, Florida. Males that fathered hatchlings in the first clutch sampled were identified in subsequent clutches. Interestingly, 75% of the females analyzed had mated singly. No male was represented in more than one female's clutches. The results suggest that females likely mate at the beginning of the season and use stored sperm for multiple clutches. Evidence for mating between laying events was limited. There was no consistent pattern across the subsequent multiple paternity clutches, suggesting benefits to loggerhead females likely equal their costs and subsequent mating is likely determined by female preference.
Influence of sea turtle nesting on hunting behavior and movements of jaguars in the dry forest of northwest Costa Rica
Jaguars (Panthera onca) are opportunistic predators that prey on large profitable prey items, such sea turtles at nesting beaches. Here we use jaguar and sea turtle track count surveys, combined with satellite telemetry of one jaguar, to evaluate whether jaguar hunting behavior and movements are influenced by seasonal sea turtle nesting in the Sector Santa Rosa of Área de Conservación Guanacaste in northwest Costa Rica. We used Generalized Linear Models to evaluate the effect of moon phase and sea surface temperature on olive ridley (Lepidochelis olivacea) and green turtle (Chelonia mydas) nesting abundance, as well as the combination of these predictors on the frequency of jaguar predation activity (proximity to nesting beaches) and movements. For home range size and location analyses, we calculated Kernel Density Estimates for each season at three different temporal scales. Sea turtle nesting season influenced jaguar activity patterns, as well as sea turtle abundance was related to jaguar locations and predation events, but jaguar home range size (88.8 km2 overall) did not differ between nesting seasons or among temporal scales. Environmental conditions influenced sea turtle nesting and, as a consequence, also influenced jaguar movements and foraging activity. Our study defined the home range of a female jaguar in the tropical dry forest and its relationship to seasonally abundant turtles. Additional information related to the effect of tourism on jaguar-sea turtle interactions would improve conservation of these species at unique nesting beaches in the area.
