Low-pH seawater alters indirect interactions in rocky-shore tidepools
<p>Ocean acidification is expected to degrade marine ecosystems, yet most studies focus on organismal-level impacts rather than ecological perturbations. Field studies are especially sparse, particularly ones examining shifts in direct and indirect consumer interactions. Here we address such connections within tidepool communities of rocky shores, focusing on a three-level food web involving the keystone sea star predator, <i>Pisaster ochraceus</i>, a common herbivorous snail, <i>Tegula funebralis</i>, and a macroalgal basal resource, <i>Macrocystis pyrifera</i>. We demonstrate that during nighttime low tides, experimentally manipulated declines in seawater pH suppress the antipredator behavior of snails, bolstering their grazing, and diminishing the top-down influence of predators on basal resources. This attenuation of top-down control is absent in pools maintained experimentally at higher pH. These findings suggest that as ocean acidification proceeds, shifts of behaviorally mediated links in food webs could change how cascading effects of predators manifest within marine communities.</p>
Dataset title: Two-minute averaged net community production in seawater estimated on the Palmer LTER Cruises along the western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP), years 2012 - 2016
<p>During the annual Palmer LTER cruises in the austral summer of 2012 - 2016, seawater O2/Ar ratios were measured underway from the ship's flow-through seawater system. High-resolution net community production (NCP) in units of mmol O2 m-2 day-1 was derived from delta O2/Ar and National Centers for Environmental Prediction reanalysis winds.</p> <p>This two-minute resolution, quality-checked NCP product was calculated from a dataset containing raw O2 and Ar gas ratios in seawater recorded during the cruise using an equilibrator inlet mass spectrometer (EIMS) (Cassar et al., 2009). The EIMS was connected to the ship’s underway water supply and measured O2 and Ar gas ratios. Data were collected continuously whilst the underway water supply was running. Data were saved continuously onto a desktop computer as well as the expedition data storage, and backed-up every 24 hours onto a USB hard drive.</p>

Seawater was sampled via tubing with depth between the surface and ~50m, then measured for the ion current ratio of dissolved O2/Ar using Membrane Inlet Mass Spectrometry (Tortell, 2005; Kaiser et al., 2005). Measurements were conducted during the P1706 CCE-CalCOFI Process Cruise (1 Jun - 2 Jul 2017). Profiles were taken on 11 June, 15 June, and 25 June during Cycle 1, Cycle 2, and Cycle 4, respectively. Oxygen saturation and solubility were separately and concurrently measured from sampled seawater using an Aanderaa optode oxygen sensor. The ratio of seawater O2/Ar to the O2/Ar ratio at equlibration with the atmosphere is also reported. Vertical profiles of O2/Ar are used to correct surface measurements of productivity using O2/Ar for vertical influences, and can also be used to qualitatively assess profiles of community metabolic activity with depth.
Sources of oceanic freshwater content along the western Antarctic Peninsula (PAL-LTER Study Region) determined by the stable isotope composition (d18O) of seawater.
The oceanic distribution of d18O is determined largely by the same processes that control salinity. Surface d18O reflects the magnitude and spatial distribution of freshwater inputs, and it is a conservative tracer in the ocean interior. The great benefit of d18O is obtained from the circumstances under which it exhibits behavior different to that of salinity. One such circumstance derives from the salinity and d18O values in precipitation, with salinity being constant with latitude (typically zero), while in general d18O in precipitation becomes progressively isotopically lighter toward the poles. This results in glacial ice (which derives from high-latitude precipitation) being very isotopically light, enabling d18O to be a useful tracer of glacial discharge to the ocean (e.g., Schlosser et al. 1990; Weiss et al. 1979). Another difference occurs in regions influenced by sea ice, which greatly affects salinity during its formation/melt cycle but has only minimal impact on d18O. This decoupling of the two tracers allows them to be used in tandem to quantitatively separate freshwater inputs from sea ice melt and those from meteoric sources (precipitation plus glacial discharge). Remote polar and deepwater fish faunas are under pressure from ongoing climate change and increasing fishing effort. However, these fish communities are difficult to monitor for logistic and financial reasons. Currently, monitoring of marine fishes largely relies on invasive techniques such as bottom trawling, and on official reporting of global catches, which can be unreliable. Thus, there is need for alternative and non-invasive techniques for qualitative and quantitative oceanic fish surveys. Here we report environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding of seawater samples from continental slope depths in Southwest Greenland. We collected seawater samples at depths of 188–918 m and compared seawater eDNA to catch data from trawling. We used Illumina sequencing of PCR products to demonstrate that eDNA reads show equivalence to fishing catch data obtained from trawling. Twenty-six families were found with both trawling and eDNA, while three families were found only with eDNA and two families were found only with trawling. Key commercial fish species for Greenland were the most abundant species in both eDNA reads and biomass catch, and interpolation of eDNA abundances between sampling sites showed good correspondence with catch sizes. Environmental DNA sequence reads from the fish assemblages correlated with biomass and abundance data obtained from trawling. Interestingly, the Greenland shark (Somniosus microcephalus) showed high abundance of eDNA reads despite only a single specimen being caught, demonstrating the relevance of the eDNA approach for large species that can probably avoid bottom trawls in most cases. Quantitative detection of marine fish using eDNA remains to be tested further to ascertain whether this technique is able to yield credible results for routine application in fisheries. Nevertheless, our study demonstrates that eDNA reads can be used as a qualitative and quantitative proxy for marine fish assemblages in deepwater oceanic habitats. This relates directly to applied fisheries as well as to monitoring effects of ongoing climate change on marine biodiversity—especially in polar ecosystems.
