Dataset of the study "Bridging cultural studies and learning science: An investigation of social media use for Holocaust memory and education in the digital age"

This Zenodo item contains the dataset of the study: Manca, S. (2020). “Bridging cultural studies and learning science: An investigation of social media use for Holocaust memory and education in the digital age".

Abstract

Along with advances in communication technology that are making new forms of historical memorialization and education available, social media are researched as valuable tools for supporting forms of digital memory and for engaging students and teachers about historical knowledge and moral education. This study aims to map the current state of Holocaust remembrance and Holocaust education and to identify main topics of research in the two areas. It adopts a mixed-method approach that combines qualitative analysis with bibliometric approaches to review publications that use social media for digital memory and history education about the Holocaust. Results based on 28 publications reveal several research topics and that, despite some common theoretical references, the two subfields mostly rely on separate conceptual backgrounds. While Holocaust remembrance is a well-established research field, there are few studies and a lack of theoretical elaboration about social media use for teaching and learning about the Holocaust.

A Taxonomy of Contemporary Arctic Studies under Social Sciences and Humanities Domain

This database serves a list of the scientific studies related to the developments in the Arctic Region from the perspective of Social Sciences and Humanities. It analyzes the Arctic studies considering their structural features, related key words, relevance to PESTEL-DEL analysis (extension of the well-known PESTEL methodology by including the dimensions of Defense-Security, Energy and Logistics), geographical coverage and methodological framework. The database covers 169 most recent scientific studies published between 2007 and 2019. It addresses topics including political issues and disputes in the Arctic Region, potential economic activities as well as economic opportunities and challenges, social and ecological structure of the region, technological developments based on the changing conditions, environmental concerns as a result of climate change and new industrial activities, legal disputes regarding continental shelf and EEZ, national defense and security efforts of the actors in the Arctic, and potential energy reserves and new logistics routes that have become accessible due to melting glaciers.

In particular, the raw data are about 27 journals, 132 articles, 5,340 bibliographic references, 8,400 mentions and 5 quotations in Medicine, and 19 journals, 81 articles, 4,571 bibliographic references, 6,953 mentions and 835 quotations in Social Sciences.

The dataset is composed of three files:

the file "medicine-journals.csv" contains the raw data of the articles published in Medicine journals;

the file "social-sciences-journals.csv" contains the raw data of the articles published in Social Sciences journals;

the file "aggregated-data-medicine-social-sciences.csv" contains the aggregated data created considering the raw data in the previous files, which have been used to creating all the tables and figures in the article.

Dataset to study "Social dynamics of values, taboos, and perceived threats around sacred groves in Kurdistan, Iran"

This dataset includes the raw data of a survey of 205 local residents in Kurdistan province, Iran. The "Dataset" sheet presents respondents' socio-demographic characteristics (distance to Baneh city, age group, gender, formal education, traditional lifestyle) and Likert-scale answers (ranging from 1 to 5) on agreement with several statements on values, taboos, and perceived threats around sacred groves in Kurdistan. The full statements are cited in the "Statements" sheet. The complete method is described in: Plieninger, T., Quintas-Soriano, C., Torralba, M., Samani, M.K. & Shakeri, Z. (2020): Social dynamics of values, taboos, and perceived threats around sacred groves in Kurdistan, Iran. People and Nature, in press.

Teaching UML Models with FLOSS Projects: A study carried out during the period of social isolation imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic

Software Engineering Education must include professional practice experiences so that students are able to specify, design, implement, maintain and evaluate computer systems, using appropriate theories, practices and tools. However, teaching Software Engineering (SE) principles, concepts and practices and relating them to real-world scenarios are challenging tasks. The adoption of Free/Libre/Open-Source Software (FLOSS) projects can assist in facing these challenges. This paper presents an experience report on the pedagogical use of FLOSS projects in a SE course, in the context of social isolation imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The course was fully virtualized, with supporting tools such as Google Classroom, Google Meet, Github, Padlet and Trello, and modeled after an instructional design based on Bloom’s taxonomy of cognitive learning objectives. FLOSS projects were used in the context of software modeling activities with UML class, sequence and activity diagrams. An online survey with twenty-six (26) students and an interview with the instructor were conducted to collect their perceptions about such experience. Results showed that most students (i) agreed that the instructional methods addressed the knowledge, comprehension and application levels in a satisfactory way; (ii) were satisfied in working with real software projects developed by others; and (iii) liked the developed activities and the tools used in the classes. The instructor and students (iv) missed face-to-face activities; and (v) agreed that the instructional design could be used in future face-to-face SE classes.

Data from: The personal and social experiences of community-dwelling younger adults after stroke in Australia: a qualitative interview study
Objectives: To examine the personal and social experiences of younger adults after stroke. Design: Qualitative study design involving in-depth semi-structured interviews and rigorous qualitative descriptive analysis informed by social constructionism. Participants: Nineteen young stroke survivors aged 18 to 55 at the time of their first-ever stroke. Setting: Participants were recruited from urban and rural settings across Australia. Interviews took place in a clinic room of the Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health (Melbourne, Australia), over an online conference platform or by telephone. Results: Four main themes emerged from the discourses: (1) psycho-emotional experiences after young stroke; (2) losing pre-stroke life construct and relationships; (3) recovering and adapting after young stroke; and (4) invalidated by the old-age, physical concept of stroke. While these themes ran through the narratives of all participants, data analysis also drew out interesting variation between individual experiences. Conclusions: For many younger adults, stroke is an unexpected and devastating life event that profoundly diverts their biography and presents complex and continued challenges to fulfilling age-normative roles. While adaptation, resilience and post-traumatic growth are common, this study suggests that more bespoke support is needed for younger adults after stroke. Increasing public awareness of young stroke is also important, as is increased research attention to this problem.
