Emergent Solutions on Requirement Engineering for Agile Software Development: A tertiary study (Auxiliary Documentation in PDF)
<p><strong>[Context and motivation]</strong> Agile Software Development (ASD) is a new trend in software development and has become popular. Its advocates claim that ASD is well suited to solving traditional software development problems by valuing human factors over technical ones. However, one of the most critical phases in software development, Requirements Engineering (RE), can be overwhelming for ASD values.<br> <strong>[Question/problem]</strong> Trying to work with RE in a traditional way for ASD can limit ASD's potential. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate what academia and industry have done in RE to exploit all of the capabilities of ASD beyond traditional RE. <br> <strong>[Principal ideas/results]</strong> This work presents an overview of the state-of-the-art Requirement Engineering (RE) for Agile Software Development (ASD). We conducted a Tertiary Study in secondary studies published from 1st January 2015 to 30th June 2021, looking for solutions for RE-ASD using the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) protocol described by Kitchenham and Charters (2007). After executing the SLR protocol, we accepted 37 out of 169 studies and encountered 136 solutions used by academia and industry for RE-ASD. We considered only a few solutions that could be classified as emergent for RE-ASD, 24 out of 106. Furthermore, we cataloged the challenges presented by the emergent solutions (e.g., a steep learning curve due to the lack of experience, process, or culture) that should be addressed. Finally, we identified a possible gap between academia and industry regarding these emerging solutions that need further investigation. <br> <strong>[Contribution]</strong> By highlighting emerging Requirements Engineering (RE) solutions for Agile Software Development (ASD), we made our contribution to help researchers who need to propose new solutions to some of the problems that remain unsolved by pointing out the recent trends for RE for ASD.</p> <p>The repository contains the following:</p> <ul> <li>Auxiliary Documentation in PDF;</li> <li>Dataset from the Tertiary Study - compressed file (refsq2023Complement.zip): <ul> <li> <p><strong>REFSQ2023-ALL-ARTICLES.csv:</strong> is a comma-separated file with all 198 (including the duplicates) found in our search in the digital libraries with their respective status (accepted, rejected, or duplicated).</p> </li> <li> <p><strong>REFSQ2023-DISTINCT-SOLUTIONS.csv:</strong> is a comma-separated file with all the distinct solutions we found in our research. Supplementary Material for Investigating the Perceived Impact of Maternity on Software Engineering: a Women's Perspective
<p>Background: Several researchers report the impact of gender on software development teams, especially in relation to women. In general, women are under-represented on these teams and face challenges and difficulties in their workplaces. When it comes to women who are mothers, these challenges can be amplified and directly impact these women's professional lives, both in industry and academia. However, little is known about women ICT practitioners' perceptions of the challenges of maternity in their professional careers.<br> Objective: This paper investigates mothers' challenges and difficulties in global software development teams. Method: We conducted a survey with women in the ICT field who work in academia and global technology companies. We surveyed 141 mothers from different countries and employed mixed methods to analyze the data. Results: Our findings reveal that women face sociocultural challenges, including work-life balance issues, bad jokes, and moral harassment. The prejudices they suffer make them insecure and with low confidence in the work performed. Furthermore, they usually do not have a supporting network during and after maternity leave, which culminates in them feeling overloaded. The surveyed women suggested a set of actions to reduce the challenges they face in their workplaces, such as: creating a code of conduct for men and childcare within companies.<br> Conclusion: Women face many challenges when they become mothers. Our findings explore these challenges and can help organizations in developing policies to minimize them. Also, it can help raise awareness of co-workers and bosses, toward a more friendly and inclusive workplace.</p>
Questionnaire and Results for the "Gamify-IT - A Web-Based Gaming Platform for Software Engineering Education" Paper
<p>This archive contains the questions and results of our questionnaire to evaluate the prototype Gamify-IT e-learning platform. The questionnaire contains 18 questions and statements to evaluate the students' experience with the platform. We conducted the evaluation with students of our programming introductory course at the University of Stuttgart. 20 students provided their feedback. Results are anonymized.</p>
Understanding the Teamwork Challenges of Software Engineering Students
<p>Developing collaborative skills in students is nontrivial. The fact that students work in teams does not mean they become skilled in teamwork. Students face varied challenges when working in teams that harm their skill development and attitude towards teamwork. To prepare students for the collaboration-intensive workplace, we researched and designed a catalog of challenges present in the teamwork of undergraduate software engineering students on 3-month projects.</p> <p>We created an initial catalog of 10 challenges by examining the literature, surveying 15 teaching assistants, and coding their opinions regarding the problems faced by student teams. Using the catalog, we crafted a survey for students nearing the end of their team project to assess which challenges were present in their teamwork. We surveyed students from multiple contexts, including teams of 3, teams of 4, and teams of 16 students.</p> <p>We analyzed 155 answers to determine the prevalence and intensity of the 10 challenges in student teams. We discuss our findings and best practices for resolving the most prevalent challenges. The catalog and recommendations are directly valuable for software engineering educators and can inform the broader community of collaborative learning researchers and instructional designers.</p>

An Experience Report About Challenges of Software Engineering as a Second Cycle Course
<p>The dynamism of the software development market has demanded increasingly qualified professionals with practical knowledge on the implementation of paradigms and methodologies in the development of projects. In this context, there are undergraduate courses in Software Engineering (SE) offered in the format of two cycles, to try to deliver to the market professionals who meet the demands of the sector. Therefore, it is important to know the challenges that arise in the teaching scenario and the emerging topics of SE, in order to provide students with an academic-professional training closer to the real scenario of the software industry. Thus, this article aims to identify the difficulties observed in an undergraduate course in SE and its emerging topics, in the form of two cycles. For this, a survey with professors from a two-cycle SE course was carried out. Through a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the results, it was possible to identify some main challenges faced by professors. This type of analysis has proved to be useful to identify opportunities for improvement in the academic-professional training of SE students and to provide the software industry with more qualified professionals.</p>
Identifying Improvement Opportunities in Software Engineering Education at the Maranhão State: Listening to Voices from Academy and Industry
<p>The teaching of Software Engineering (SE) has become challenging due to the large amount of content taught and the constant evolution of the software industry, directly impacting the requirements necessary to apply for a position in the area of Information Technology (IT). In this context, it is clear that students of computer courses still find it difficult to know how to prepare for the job market, and Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) may have difficulties in aligning themselves with market expectations with their syllabus in SE. This paper aims to provide a holistic view of the teaching-learning process, involving the views of students, HEIs and IT companies in the context of the state of Maranhão; and to propose reflections on the current state of the education to complement the contents and methodologies applied in the classroom with the needs of the local industry. To do so, three activities were carried out: (1) mapping expectations and evaluating higher education from the students’ point of view; (2) analysis of higher education disciplines in higher education institutions in the state of Maranhão in Brazil; and (3) survey of expectations of the IT market considering the vacancies disclosed in relation to the SE area in the state of Maranhão. The results indicate a partial fulfillment of the demand regarding the taught topics related to SE from the local industry by the HEIs. In addition, there is a need to improve the teaching-learning methodological processes, focusing on practical activities and the learning of teamwork skills, in addition to knowledge in software development.</p>
