In the Footsteps of Tradition: Reinventing the Paths of the Santa Faz within the Paradigm of Sustainability and Territorial Development in Alicante

Abstract: The Santa Faz Pilgrimage, with over 600 years of history and as Spain’s second most significant pilgrimage, is at a critical point due to urbanization and inadequate planning. This study explores revitalizing and enhancing the historical Santa Faz routes, integrating cultural tourism, environmental sustainability, and socioeconomic benefits. Recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage, the pilgrimage impacts Alicante’s cultural landscape, yet faces pressure from modern urban development. Using a multidisciplinary approach aligned with the UN’s 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, the study proposes alternative routes, such as a “green route” through ancient paths and water routes, a Villafranqueza route, and one from the former Monastery of Los Ángeles. These paths would be revived through local reforestation, sustainable tourism infrastructure, and rest areas for pilgrims. The restoration of the Santa Faz paths is seen as vital for cultural heritage conservation, sustainable tourism, and job creation, with both opportunities and challenges in integrating these routes into the Council of Europe’s Cultural Routes. The study advocates modifying the urban plan and promoting employment in heritage and tourism management, emphasizing the need for ongoing research and cross-disciplinary collaboration to secure the long-term preservation and development of these culturally significant spaces.

Mapping Sustainable Development Goals to Citizen Science projects - Datasets

This work presents opportunities, achievements, and future challenges in using computational analytics to better understand the connection between CS and the SDGs. The work in its status does not fully cover SDGs in CS, but it evaluates and shows the potential of the text-classification techniques for identifying SDGs in CS project descriptions and for assessing trends in connection of CS and SDGs based on available data.

A total of 56 websites have been used to extract randomly 208 project descriptions from the CS Track database collected during 2019-2022.

Content and grouping:

Compiled list of keywords for SDG mapping.

Spreadsheet containing training data from SciStarter (set of projects associated with SDGs)

Spreadsheet containing the list of projects associated with SDGs in relation to the different automatic classifiers (nCoder, ESA and OSDG) and manual coding.

Presentation in CS Track ECSA event (8th October 2022, Berlin): CS-Track database: a central database of CS projects in Europe that can be key to understand the connection of CS and SDGs “Understanding the nature of Citizen Science in a rapidly changing world”

The associated full report resulting from this study is in progress. Database article Developing Sustainable Career Paths for Preuniversity Teachers. An Empirical Analysis of Central Dimensions of Job Readiness

The quality of teacher training is highly likely to influence the quality of learning outcomes. In this view, the present paper aimed to develop a pre-service teachers’ job readiness model integrating individual variables associated with teacher professionalism. The study followed an exploratory cross-sectional research design. A sample of 312 Romanian pre-service STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) teachers was selected based on availability criteria. A pre-tested self-administered questionnaire using a 5-point Likert scale was applied during the data collection process. Data analysis was based on a combination of descriptive and inferential statistics, a blending factor analysis and structural equations modeling. A conceptual model of teaching readiness from the teacher professionalism perspective was developed and tested using empirical data. The results suggest that professional knowledge, professional practice, professional engagement and self-management could be considered central dimensions of teacher professionalism, being highly relevant in assessing pre-service teacher job readiness. Moreover, professional knowledge has a strong and positive influence on teaching practice and professional engagement. In relation to the professional knowledge latent variable, the ability to conduct didactic transposition is the most influential. Following the same line of analysis, the most significant vectors of the professional practice variable were found to be the ability to design effective evaluation tools and to analyze and interpret learning outcomes. The research revealed the presence of vulnerable or sensitive areas of teacher training that could be a result of curriculum design. With respect to managing disruptive behaviours, the customization of learning and emotional self-regulation are considered weak areas of teaching readiness. The results could be useful for policymakers and teacher training practitioners in order to improve overall job readiness and teacher professionalism.
