Sampling a pika’s pantry: Temporal shifts in nutritional quality & over-winter preservation of American pika food caches
Climate change is increasing temperature, decreasing precipitation, and increasing atmospheric CO2 concentrations in many ecosystems. As atmospheric carbon rises, plants may increase carbon-based defenses such as phenolics, thereby potentially affecting food quality, foraging habits, and habitat suitability for mammalian herbivores. In alpine habitats, the American pika (Ochotona princeps) is a model species for studying effects of changing plant chemistry on mammals. To survive between growing seasons, pikas cache “haypiles” of plants rich in phenolics. Although they are acutely toxic to pikas, phenolic compounds help plants retain biomass and nutrition during storage, and they break down over time. Alpine avens (Geum rossii, Rosales: Rosaceae) is a high-phenolic plant species that comprises up to 75% of pika winter diet in Colorado. Here, we tested the hypothesis that contemporary climate change has affected the nutritional value of Alpine avens to pikas in the last 30 years. Specifically, we compared phenolic activity, nutritional quality, and overwinter preservation of plants collected at Niwot Ridge, Colorado (USA) in 1992 to those collected between 2010 – 2018, spanning nearly three decades of climate change. Phenolic activity increased in alpine avens since 1992, while fiber and nitrogen content decreased. Importantly, overwinter preservation of plant biomass also increased, particularly on windblown slopes without long-lasting snow cover. Previous studies indicate that pikas at this site still depend on alpine avens in their winter food caches. Increasing phenolic content in alpine avens could therefore enhance the preservation of haypiles over winter; however, if pikas must further delay consuming these plants to avoid acute toxicity, then he nutritional gains from enhanced preservation may not be beneficial. This study provides important insights into how changing plant chemistry will affect mammalian herbivores in the future.
Logger Microclimate Data from Californian Drylands Winter 2023 Sampling.
Logger microclimate data (temperature, sunlight intensity, and relative humidity) were collected using the HOBO ONSET 64K data logger and OMEGA engineering temperature and RH pendant two aridity gradients across California. Microsites included the open, shrub, and two artificial shelter types: square and triangle.
LAGOS Lake nutrient, carbon and chlororphyll data to evaluate biases in lake water quality sampling practices in a 17-state region of the US
This dataset includes data for eight major limnological variables in LAGOS-NE_LIMNO v. 1.087.1 that were used to evaluate biases in lake water quality sampling and implications for macroscale research (Stanley et al. In Revision, Limnology and Oceanography). Most observations came from LAGOS-NE_LIMNO v. 1.087.1, an integrated database of lake ecosystems (Soranno et al. 2015, Soranno et al. 2017) but were supplemented with additional data from the State of New Hampshire. LAGOS-NE contains information on lakes great than or equal to 1 ha (originally derived from the U.S. Geological Survey's 2013 National Hydrography Dataset) for a 17-state region of the U.S., and a subset of the lakes has observational data on lake chemistry and productivity. Approximately 87 different sources of data were compiled for the LAGOS-NELIMNO v. 1.087.1 dataset and were mostly generated by government agencies (state, federal, tribal) and universities. In this analysis, we compiled data for eight major limnological variables (Secchi disk depth, chlorophyll, total phosphorus, total nitrogen, nitrate, ammonium, true water color, and dissolved organic carbon) and geographic characteristics of lakes (location, lake area, depth, perimeter, watershed area) to evaluate biases in different limnological properties over space and time.
Semi-quantitative microcystin concentration measured in surface water samples collected by the Citizen-Led Environmental Observatory (CLEO) from multiple nearshore sites in Lake Lillinonah, Connecticut, USA, 2015-2018
Included in this data package are cyanobacterial toxin data from the Citizen-Led Environmental Observatory (CLEO), a volunteer water quality monitoring program run by Friends of the Lake (FOTL, friendsofthelake.org) and Fairfield University at Lake Lillinonah, Connecticut, USA. The program has been operational since 2008 (toxin data available form 2015-2018). Trained volunteer monitors collect routine surface water samples from multiple nearshore sites twice a month from Memorial Day through Labor Day. In addition, spot samples are taken whenever a significant algae bloom is present at the collection site. These samples are analyzed for microcystin concentrations. Routine water samples are also analyzed for levels of the total nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations. Additionally, CLEO volunteers collect data on water temperature, Secchi disk depth, water color, presence of floating woody debris, recreation potential, trash, particle type and surface scum every 1-3 days during the same period. These data are available in EDI packages EDI567 (general water quality) and EDI568 (nutrients).
