Liquefied Natural Gas Phase III: Export Competition in a Well Supplied, Flow-Shifting Global Economy

<p>With trillions of cubic feet of shale reserves, the United States&rsquo; (US) abundance of natural gas has prompted an increase in production of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) as an export commodity. While the Trump administration has taken strides to loosen policy set by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) in order to streamline US LNG export facility permitting, UNOTI has reasoned that policies focused too heavily on LNG as an export is misguided. A more robust energy policy acknowledges the higher value of natural gas to the petrochemical manufacturing industries as well as the development and commercialization of new LNG technologies in the maritime industry, particularly as a marine fuel. Furthermore, US energy independence fueled by shale mining will alter how the US acts in the global market place, thereby destabilizing the system in place since the Bretton Woods Agreement in 1944. However, competing natural gas rich nations like Australia, Qatar, and Russia have similar goals to expand production indicating US LNG export growth will not be without competition. In addition to potential increases in US LNG exports and what this implies for global markets, this paper discusses current transportation developments in LNG powered marine vessel refueling technology allowing for waterside refueling as an alternative to shore side bunkering, as well as an overview of what increased US shale frac&rsquo;ing and LNG export implies for US roadway infrastructure and how short sea shipping may provide an alternative to trucking and rail movements.</p>

Are comments on Stack Overflow well organized for easy retrieval by developers?

<p>Many Stack Overflow answers have associated informative comments that can strengthen them and assist developers. A prior study found that comments can provide additional information to point out issues in their associated answer, such as the obsolescence of an answer. By showing more informative comments (e.g., the ones with higher scores) and hiding less informative ones, developers can more effectively retrieve information from the comments that are associated with an answer. Currently, Stack Overflow prioritizes the display of comments and as a result, 4.4 million comments (possibly including informative comments) are hidden by default from developers. In this study, we investigate whether this mechanism effectively organizes informative comments. We find that: 1) The current comment organization mechanism does not work well due to the large amount of tie-scored comments (e.g., 87% of the comments have 0-score). 2) In 97.3% of answers with hidden comments, at least one comment that is possibly informative is hidden while another comment with the same score is shown (i.e., unfairly hidden comments). The longest unfairly hidden comment is more likely to be informative than the shortest one. Our findings highlight that Stack Overflow should consider adjusting the comment organization mechanism to help developers effectively retrieve informative comments. Furthermore, we build a classifier that can effectively distinguish informative comments from uninformative comments. We also evaluate two alternative comment organization mechanisms (i.e., the <em>Length</em> mechanism and the <em>Random</em> mechanism) based on text similarity and the prediction of our classifier.</p>

Outdoor activity participation improves adolescents' mental health and well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic

<p>The COVID-19 pandemic is reshaping human interactions with the natural environment, generating profound consequences for health and well-being. To assess the effects of COVID-19 on the outdoor recreation participation and well-being of adolescents we conducted a nationally representative survey of youth ages 10-18 across the United States (n = 624) using a Qualtrics XM panel between April 30 and June 15, 2020. Survey questions focused on frequency of participation in several types of outdoor activities before and during the pandemic. Activity categories included outdoor play activities (e.g., running, biking), nature-based activities (e.g., camping, fishing), and spending outdoor time with family. We assessed changes in the psychological health of youth using a four-item subjective well-being scale validated by the World Health Organization. Paired t-tests revealed significant decreases in both outdoor recreation participation (64% of youth reported declines) and subjective well-being (52% reported declines) during the pandemic. A regression model examining correlates of changes in subjective well-being (<i>R<sup>2</sup></i>=0.42) revealed strong associations between subjective well-being and changes in outdoor play activities (<i>B</i>=0.44, <i>p</i>&lt;0.001) and changes in nature-based activities (<i>B</i>=0.21, <i>p</i>=0.016). Youth who continued to participate in these activities during COVID-19 reported significantly smaller drops in subjective well-being, whereas youth whose outdoor participation waned were more negatively impacted by the pandemic. Furthermore, youth who reported high levels of outdoor play activity participation before the pandemic were also less likely to experience post-COVID-19 declines in subjective well-being. These results contribute to our understanding of adolescent psychological reactions to the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as highlighting the critical role that time outdoors and time in nature can play in bolstering youth resilience to environmental stressors.</p>

Data from: How well can we estimate diversity dynamics for clades in diversity decline?

The fossil record shows that the vast majority of all species that ever existed are extinct and that most lineages go through an expansion and decline in diversity. However, macroevolutionary analyses based upon molecular phylogenies have difficulty inferring extinction dynamics, raising questions about whether the neontological record can contribute to an understanding of the decline phenomenon. Two recently developed diversification methods for molecular phylogenies (RPANDA and BAMM) incorporate models that theoretically have the capacity to capture decline dynamics by allowing extinction to be higher than speciation. However, the performance of these frameworks over a wide range of decline scenarios has not been studied. Here we investigate the behavior of these methods under decline scenarios caused by decreasing speciation and increasing extinction through time on simulated trees at fixed intervals over diversity trajectories with expansion and decline phases. We also compared method performance over a comprehensive dataset of 214 empirical trees. Our results show that both methods perform equally well when varying speciation rates control decline. When decline was only caused by an increase in extinction rates both methods wrongly assign the variation in net diversification to a drop in speciation, even though the positive gamma values of those trees would suggest otherwise. We also found a tendency for RPANDA to favor increasing extinction and BAMM to favor decreasing speciation as the most common cause of decline in empirical trees. Overall our results shed light on the limitations of both methods, encouraging researchers to carefully interpret the results from diversification studies.
