Amîr Khusrau’s famous work on epistolography and elegant prose-writing, with numerous specimens both of official documents and of the author’s own letters, entitled رسائل الاعجاز or اعجاز خسروى, and completed according to the statement in Rieu ii. p. 527, A.H. 719 (A.D. 1319); an earlier date, at least for the completion of the second risâlah, is given in W. Pertsch, Berlin Cat., p. 1006, viz, A.H. 716, 7th of Shawwâl (A.D. 1316, Dec. 23); see besides these two references, No. 1337 of the Bodleian Cat., and Elliot, History of India, iii. p. 566. It consists of a preface, an introduction (ديباچه), and five risâlas, each of which is subdivided into several khaṭṭs (خطّ), ḥarfs (حرف), etc. Contents: Preface, on fol. 1b, beginning: هذا الكتاب بفضل الله ذى الكرم انشأت سحرًا لصيد الخ. Introduction, on fol. 10a, last line (ديباچۀ كتاب رسائل الاعجاز). First risâlah, in ten khaṭṭs ( الرسالة الاولى فى المفردات و المركّبات تشتمل على عشرة خطوط), on fol. 15a. Second risâlah, in nine khaṭṭs ( الرسالة الثانية فى المرتّبات من المكتوبات يشتمل على تسعة خطوط), on fol. 53b. In the Berlin copy (W. Pertsch, loc. cit) this risâlah has ten khaṭṭs, like the first. Third risâlah, in two khaṭṭs ( الرسالة الثالثة من الاعجاز فى اللطائف من المصنوعات يشتمل على خطّين), on fol. 149b. Fourth risâlah, in five khaṭṭ ( الرسالة الرابعة فى البدائع من المعنويّات تشتمل على خمسة خطوط), on fol. 182b. Fifth risâlah, in six khaṭṭs (الرسالة الخامسة فى السوابق من المنشآت تشتمل على ستّة خطوط), on fol. 277b. Numerous marginal glosses and additions, written by the same hand as the text. The headings, given here, are taken from the following copy. Dated Shawwâl, A.H. 1084 (A.D. 1674, January-February), by Sayyid Ja’far ibn Sayyid Ṭâhir Ḳâdirî. The first risâlah of the رسائل الاعجاز has been lithographed in Lucknow, 1865; the whole work, under the title of اعجاز خسرو, in the same place, 1876. Mathnawiyyât, on fol. 71b; the first, in honour of Sulṭân ‘Alâ-aldîn Khiljî, begins: بيا اى گهر جوى درياى غيب الخ (see Rieu, loc. cit., and No. 783 of the Bodleian Cat.); another mathnawî, in honor of Shaikh Niżâm-aldîn Auliyâ, noticed in No. 780 of the Bodleian Cat., is found here on fol. 85a, and begins: بنام پادشاه بنده پرور الخ. No date. Tenth century of the Hijrah. This copy was bought at Lucknow and formerly belonged to Mr. Richard Johnson. No. 3314, olim 19. Lyrical poems by Amîr Najm-aldîn Ḥasan Sanjarî of Dihlî, the friend of Amîr Khusrau, and like him, a pupil of Niżâm-aldîn Auliyâ; he was called the Sa’dî of India (see Haft Iḳlîm, No. 392, col. 405 in this Cat.), and probably died A.H. 727 (A.D. 1327); later dates of his death are A.H. 738 (A.D. 1337, 1338), see Khulâṣat-alafkâr, No. 73 (Bodleian Cat., col. 305), and A.H. 745 (A.D. 1344, 1345) according to Taḳî Kâshî; the date given in the Mirât-alkhayâl, No. 31 (Bodleian Cat., col. 208), viz. A.H. 707 (A.D. 1307, 1308), is due to a mistake, as the poet began in this year the memoirs of Niżâm-aldîn Auliyâ, styled فوائد الفؤاد, which he completed A.H. 720 (A.D. 1320); comp. Bodleian Cat., Nos. 780-783; Rieu ii. p. 618; W. Pertsch, p. 73, and Berlin Cat., p. 841; A. Sprenger, Catal., p. 18, No. 70, and p. 418; Cat. des MSS. et Xylographes, p. 356; J. Aumer, p. 22, etc. According to the preface in prose, on fol. 1b sq., in this copy, the author collected the poems of this dîwân in his sixty-third year, A.H. 715, and completed it in the 20th of Dhû-alḳa’dah of that year (A.D. 1316, Feb. 15), see fol. 2b, l. 3. He tells us moreover, that he began composing poetry already in his thirteenth year, and continued it for fifty years, writing works both in prose and verse. He was consequently born A.H. 652 (A.D. 1254). Contents: Preface in prose, on fol. 1b (the heading prefixed to it, كتاب قصائد سعدى, seems to refer to the poet’s epithet of the Indian Sa’di). Ḳaṣîdas, on fol. 2b, beginning: اى حاكم جهان و جهان داور حكيم محدث همه بدائع و تو مبدع قديم From the sixth Ḳaṣîdah onwards (on fol. 8a, last line) the arrangement is alphabetical. Ghazals, on fol. 57b, beginning: اى سر هر نامه نقش نام تو – نام ما در دفتر انعام تو The alphabetical order begins, on fol. 60b, with the thirteenth ghazal, the same which is quoted in Bodleian Cat., No. 783; A. Sprenger, and W. Pertsch, Berlin Cat.: .اى بر فراز سرو بر آورده ماه را الخ At the end a few ḳiṭ’as. Some of these ghazals have been edited by Bland in his ‘Century of Persian Ghazals,’ pp. ٥-٨. Rubâ’îs, on fol. 228a. Copied A.H. 943 (A.D. 1536, 1537), according to the colophon on fol. 230a. Another date appears on fol. 227a, viz. 903 ( سنۀ ثلاث و تسعمائه), no doubt a mistake for 943 ( ثلاث و اربعين و تسعمائه). College of Fort William, 1825. This fragment of Amîr Khusrau’s Ḳiṣṣa-i-Khiḍr-khânî (as it is styled here) comprises less than one third of the whole poem; it begins with the following heading (corresponding to No. 2796, 1215 in this Cat., fol. 25a): قلم زدن نخست در شرع تيغ زدن جمهور سلاطين ماضيّه على الخصوص در آثار ذوالفقار محمّد علاء الدنيا و الدين، First bait (not found in No. 2796): كنون از باغ اصلى نو كنم بر - زشاخ خشك ريزم ميوۀ تر Last two headings (on ff. 72a and 76b): گرم شدن چشم دولرانى در روى شمس الحقّ ، و الدين خضرخان واز ناب مهر آب در چشمش گشتن و مهربان گشتن آن چشمۀ مهربان نیلوفر هندی و چون شعاع خورشید بصفراء زمين حکایت and افتادن، (= No. 2796, ff. 48a and 57a). The initial bait of the latter is: بمهمانى بزى شد كهنه ميشى بپهلو خارشی بر پشت ریشی The final bait of the fragment (not found in No. 2796) is: بفردوس حرم با غيب دلكش كه فردوس ارم نبود چنان خوش‘ No date. Butkhâna, No. 31, Bodleian Cat., col. 201; Âtashkada, No. 136, ib., col. 266; Khulâṣat-alkalâm, No. 4, ib., col. 295; Khulâṣat-alafkâr, No. 29, ib., col. 303; Makhzan-algharâ’ib, No. 32, ib., col. 317; only in the Haft Iḳlîm, No. 874, coll. 441 and 442 in this Cat., it is distinctly stated that he ought to be designated Iṣfahânî, and not Marâghî, and that view is followed in the Safînat-alauliyâ, No. 349, col. 309 in this Cat.), who died in Marâgha, A.H. 738 (A.D. 1337, 1338); comp. Khalfa ii. p. 498, No. 3856, etc. Auḥadî was a pupil of Shaikh Auḥad-aldîn Kirmânî (who died A.H. 697=A.D. 1298), with whom he is often confounded. Besides the present mathnawî, he composed a dîwân (copies of which are described in Rieu ii. p. 619a; W. Pertsch, p. 72, etc.; see also Ḥ. Khalfa iii. p. 264) and a ده نامه (see Rieu, loc. cit., and Ḥ. Khalfa iii. p. 239). The Jâm-i-Jam was composed A.H. 733 (A.D. 1332, 1333), see here, fol. 137b, l. 3 (in one copy of the British Mus. Or. 333 there appears as date A. H. 732), and divided into three daurs, viz. دور اوّل در مبداء آفرينش, on fol. 21a; دور دوم در كيفيّت معاش جمهور; in two bâbs, (a) در معاش اهل دنيا, on fol. 34b; (b) در معاش اهل آخرت, on fol. 79b; دور سيوم در شرح معاد خلائق و احوال آخرت, on fol. 121b. Beginning: قد قال (read لامرء) هو الله لامره ( read قُل) قال من له الحمد دائما متوال On fol. 8b the praise of Sulṭân Abû Sa’îd Bahâdur-khân, the reigning sovereign (A.H. 716-736=A.D. 1316-1335), begins, and on fol. 14a the dedication of the poem to the wazîr Khwâjah Ghiyâth-aldîn Muḥammad bin Rashîd. Dated by Mîr Najm-aldîn alḥusainî, who transcribed this excellent copy for his friend Mir Sirâj-aldîn, the 23rd of Rabî’-althânî, A.H. 1169 (A.D. 1756, Jan. 26). College of Fort William, 1825. This copy, which appears to have been made from one of the earliest collections of Salmân’s poems, but has unfortunately a lacuna after fol. 11, begins with a long artificial ḳaṣîdah ( قصيدۀ مصنوع), on fol. 1b, of the same manner of taushîḥ as those poems of Ahlî Shîrâzî, described at length in the Catalogue of the Bodleian Library, coll. 652, 653. The chief subtlety is, that all the words of two and two, or three and three baits, written in red ink, form together a new distich, usually a mathnawî-bait, and every bait of this kind represents a different metre and a different tropical figure; for instance, from the first two baits of the ḳaṣîdah: صواى صفوت رويت بريخت آب بهار هواى جنّت كويت ببيخت مشك تتار اگر خبر زصفاى تو گلستان دارد گل از حياى رخت جاودان ندارد بار There springs this mathnawî-bait in the metre of هزج مثمّن سالم, and representing التّرصيع و الاشتقاق: صواى صفوت رويت صفات گلستان دارد هواى جنّت كويت حيات جاودان دارد، Besides, (I) all the initial letters of the baits give a ḳiṭ’ah of three distichs, containing a dedication to the Wazîr Ghiyâth-aldîn Muḥammad; (2) from the حشو, i.e. specially-selected letters, of the words in all the first hemistiches springs a ḳiṭ’ah of eight distichs, in which no alif appears; (3) from the حشو of the words in all the second hemistichs springs another ḳiṭ’ah of seven distichs, in which no diacritical point appears; and (4) by another arrangement of select letters, a ghazal of five distichs is formed. Comparing this ḳaṣîdah of Salmân’s with the above-mentioned three ḳaṣîdas of Ahlî Shîrâzî, it is evident that the latter based his poems on that of his predecessor to such an extent that it may almost be called a plagiarism. The other contents of the dîwân are: Ḳaṣîdas, tarjî’bands, and ḳiṭ’as, without any order, beginning abruptly, on fol.12a, in the middle of a poem (one leaf being left blank); the initial poem of the following copy (No. 2458), viz. در درج در عقيق الخ, is found here on fol. 30a. Ghazals, likewise without any order, on fol. 202b, beginning: تا تو دل در بند جان دارى و جان در بند تن چون مرا در خویش گیری در کنار خویشتن Rubâ’îs, on fol. 266b, beginning: اى كارگذاران الخ . Some words and whole lines are occasionally left blank, on ff. 19a, 19b, 84a, and 268b-274a. No date. A seal from A.D. 1799 on the last page.
