Patch occupancy sampling of invertebrates and salamanders from Coweeta Synoptic sampling sites located in the Upper Little Tennessee River Basin, 2009 to 2012.

This research was conducted in Macon County, North Carolina, as part of the Coweeta LTER synoptic sampling program. In the summers of 2009-2012 we sampled and counted Tallaperla species, Elimia species, fish, and salamanders found in a 150meter stretch at the synoptic sites, a total of 44 sites. The 150meter stretch was divided into thirty 5meter plots that were sampled on three occasions each year of sampling; in 2009 all 44 sites were sample, in 2010 a subset of 8 sites were sampled, in 2011 a subset of 9 sites were sampled, and in 2012 a subset of 8 sites were sampled.

Synoptic Sampling Program GIS data.

Coweeta LTER researchers sampled fifty-eight stream sites in the Upper Little Tennessee River Basin in February and June of 2009. Sites were selected to represent the range of land cover and land use within the basin. Samples were taken over three days of stable weather and discharge during periods of baseflow. They were used to characterize conditions across the basin during the growing and the non-growing seasons without the influence of elevated discharge. The GIS data presented was used to both help in selecting the 58 sites. The GIS files are split between raster and vector files. The files are in .zip archives. There are text files with information about each GIS in the .zip files.

GIS vector data for sample locations and plots associated with the Hillslope Study in Macon County, NC

The Hillslope Study sites represent a gradient of landscapes, including forested, valley agriculture, and mountain housing developments. These locations and plots were used to collect samples of various matrices for numerous analyses at differing intervals. The data set consists of Open Office spreadsheet and other files that document all the Hillslope Study locations.

Fall 2013 grasshopper monitoring -- mid-marsh grasshopper abundance and species diversity at eight GCE LTER sampling sites

Grasshopper abundance and species diversity were investigated at eight sampling sites within the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems (GCE) LTER study area in August 2013. Visual surveys were conducted along 8 2m by 10m transects randomly allocated within the mid-marsh zone at each site. All grasshoppers observed within each transect were counted and identified to species, if possible. This survey was conducted as part of the GCE invertebrate monitoring program, and will be performed annually to assess long-term changes in relative species abundances across the GCE study area.

Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: Tree component masses sampled west of watershed 6 by Whittaker et al in 1965

In the summer of 1965, Whittaker et al. sampled 93 trees west of watershed 6 at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest. Allometric equations modeling the biomass of various components in relation to diameter and height were published in 1974 in Ecological Monographs, and form the basis for most subsequent biomass estimates at Hubbard Brook and in many other northeastern locations. The data posted here are oven-dry biomass data by component by tree. These Hubbard Brook allometry data have been included in the following two larger allometry databases: Falster, D.S. et al, 2015. BAAD: a Biomass And Allometry Database for woody plants. Ecology 96, 1445. <ulink url="https://doi.org/10.1890/141889.1">https://doi.org/10.1890/141889.1</ulink> Kattge, J. et al, 2020. Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: W3 Surface Water Sampling Sites – 2009-2010

This dataset presents field and analytical data collected during a surface water sampling survey on six dates between July 9, 2009 and October 1, 2010 in watershed 3 (W3) at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, NH, USA. Samples were collected every 50 meters along an ephemeral to perennial stream network and at groundwater seeps wherever they were located. The dataset includes both a table of chemical analyses and a shapefile of sampling site locations. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

Beetle community at Hubbard Brook sampled by window traps 1973-1977 and 2015-2017

Beetles were sampled using window traps at in the same locations within the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, New Hampshire, in 1973-1977 and again in 2015-2017. Samples were collected from late May through early August, but the number of weeks sampled differed among years. Most individuals collected were identified to the family level. For statistical analyses, counts by taxon for all samples were adjusted to a 48-hr collection period by simple linear interpolation. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station. These data have been published in Harris, J.E., Rodenhouse, N.L. and Holmes, R.T., 2019. Decline in beetle abundance and diversity in an intact temperate forest linked to climate warming. Biological Conservation, 240, p.108219.

Pond diatom communities from the McMurdo Sound region of Antarctica, assessed from modern samples (2012-2016) and from historical samples collected during Shackleton’s Nimrod Expedition (1908-1909)

We performed a field survey to characterize diatom communities living in the benthic microbial mats of ponds across the McMurdo Sound region of Antarctica. Samples were collected during the Austral summers of 2012-13, 2013-14, and 2015-16 from the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Cape Royds, and from Hut Ridge near McMurdo Station. We also characterized pond diatom communities in samples collected on various dates from 1908-1909 during Ernest Shackleton’s Nimrod Expedition to compare against modern samples. Historical samples were taken from Cape Royds and the Stranded Moraines, and were analyzed from slides stored at the Natural History Museum, London. This data package includes relative abundance data for diatom species found in these modern and historical samples.

MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Sand Flat Sampling: Sand Infaunal Surveys

These data represent abundances of infaunal invertebrates in lagoonal sand flats along the north shore of Moorea. Surveys were conducted once along five transects in the Vaipahu lagoon within the LTER 1 study site. The number of individuals from distinct invertebrate taxa were counted from 1815 cubic centimeter sand cores taken at varying distances from a large patch reef. The data also include sand grain size distributions.
