Variable energy storage and growth in the sea star Pisaster ochraceus
<p>The complete data set describes environmentally based variation in size-specific energy storage (dry mass pyloric caeca/dry body mass) and growth of live mass of the intertidal sea star <em>Pisaster ochraceus </em>in British Columbia, Canada. Variation in energy storage and live mass correspond to (1) naturally occurring or (2) experimentally induced changes in the zonation of their prey, the sea mussel <em>Mytilus californianus</em> and associated species. The relevant features of mussel zonation are the depth (vertical distance from a fixed tidal datum) of the lower boundary and the species/size composition of the lower boundary. Downward extensions of the boundaries comprised of masses of relatively young mussels incurred the greatest increases in energy storage and live mass.</p> <p>Data are presented in 4 files:</p> <p>(1) <em>Energy storage - Observational study</em>. Variation in energy storage at three sites sampled at irregular intervals from 2008 to 2014. Variables include live mass, dry mass of viscera, and dry mass of the remainder of the body of individual <em>Pisaster ochraceus</em>. Sample dates were chosen to represent natural inter-annual variation in mussel zonation, rather than tracking continuous time courses. </p> <p>(2) <em>Storage-boundary depth relationships</em>. Variables derived from observational study and include summary measures of energy storage (slope of the linear regression of dry viscera mass to dry body mass, for dry body masses< 120 g); boundary depth (vertical distance from tidal datum); and the qualitative composition of the lower boundary.</p> <p>(3) <em>Energy storage and live mass - Experimental study</em>. Records were made after 1-3 years of experimental manipulation of the mussel boundaries on experimental sites. Variables include initial live mass, final live mass, dry mass of viscera, and dry mass of the remainder of the body of individual <em>Pisaster ochraceus</em> recaptured in the three large-scale replicates of the translocation experiment. </p> <p>(4) <em>Boundary depth - Experimental study</em>. Variables include the type of boundary manipulation, the change in boundary shore levels with respect to conventional tidal data, the resulting composition of the lower boundary, and years of manipulation. </p> <p>Further information on-site locations, methods of data acquisition, and definitions of the variables appear in Methods and Usage Notes below.</p>

Wood Brook catchment: A coupled phenology – surface energy balance model to understand stream – subsurface temperature dynamics
<p>This folder contains data, model input files, model executable and source code required to reproduce results in the paper:"Evaluating a coupled phenology – surface energy balance model to understand stream – subsurface temperature dynamics in a mixed-use farmland catchment" by Han Qiu, Phillip Blaen, Sophie Comer-Warner, David M. Hannah, Stefan Krause and Mantha S. Phanikumar (Water Resources Research).</p> <p>The catchment (referred to herein as Wood Brook, Mill Brook, Mill Haft, BIFOR) is a mixed-use farmland catchment in central England. The "Data" folder contains information needed to create model input files. The "Figures" folder contains MS excel files with observed data (streamflows, groundwater heads, stream, streambed and groundwater temperatures etc) and simulation results to recreate the figures in the WRR paper. The other three folders contain model inputs, outputs and source code.</p>

<p>This release is associated with a paper entitled "Optimal Management of Distribution-Connected Assets Operating under Carbon and Energy Day-Ahead Markets".</p> <p>In this document, we provide information regarding the transmission and distribution power systems adopted to present the results shown in the paper. These systems are modified versions of the IEEE <a href="https://icseg.iti.illinois.edu/ieee-14-bus-system/">14-bus</a> and the IEEE <a href="https://cmte.ieee.org/pes-testfeeders/resources/">34-bus</a>, respectively. Five dispatchable generators were added to the distribution system and 13 load shapes were considered. The data regarding the costs and physical parameters of each of the power system's elements are provided in this document.</p>

<p>Dataset supporting publication:“Environmental sustainability and Energy Efficiency in Historical Buildings: GeoFit Project Implementation in the Case Study of a medieval fortress in Perugia” (publication available for download: <a href="https://zenodo.org/record/7435513">GEOFIT Zenodo</a>)</p> <p>Italian cities are mainly constituted by buildings constructed until the mid-20th century by pre-industrial construction techniques. A HVAC system for the energy retrofit of historical buildings is evaluated when applied in the case study of Sant’Apollinare. It consists of a ground source heat pump a water tank for thermal energy storage connected to a low-temperature radiant system and air handling unit. The building thermal-energy behavior, typically influenced by thermal inertia in historical buildings, and the novel HVAC system performance interactions are comparatively assessed together with more traditional scenarios. Energy demand decreases by about one third compared to the pre-retrofit situation.</p>

<p>The dataset contains power measurements of the St. Mary's hospital community, located in Gulu, Uganda. The variables available are: PV production, the total load, the back-up diesel generator production and the consumption of the sterilization machine (which are part of the total load). Dataset for Energy Resource Management Considering Participation in the Wholesale Day-Ahead Market
<p>This release is associated with a paper entitled "A Novel Framework for Day-Ahead Market Clearing Process Featuring a Hybrid Pricing Mechanism".</p> <p>In this document, we provide the mathematical manipulation employed to linearize an MPEC problem that models the market-clearing process considering the participation of generation companies and distribution operators in the day-ahead market. Additionally, we provide a numerical example of the pricing mechanism designed for solving the optimization problem. </p> <p>Finally, we include information regarding the transmission and distribution power systems adopted to present the results shown in the paper. These systems are modified versions of the IEEE <a href="https://icseg.iti.illinois.edu/ieee-14-bus-system/">14-bus</a> and the IEEE <a href="https://cmte.ieee.org/pes-testfeeders/resources/">34-bus</a>, respectively. Three renewable non-dispatchable generators were added to the original 14-bus system, while 5 dispatchable generators and 3 non-dispatchable generators were added to the distribution system. 13 load shapes were considered as well as 5 scenarios for each uncertain variable (wind velocity, solar irradiance, distribution load oscillation, and transmission load oscillation). The data regarding the costs and physical parameters of each of the power system's elements are provided in this document.</p>

Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics (MESA): Time-Dependent Convection, Energy Conservation, Automatic Differentiation, and Infrastructure
<p>We update the capabilities of the open-knowledge software instrument Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics (MESA). The new auto_diff module implements automatic differentiation in MESA, an enabling capability that alleviates the need for hard-coded analytic expressions or finite difference approximations. We significantly enhance the treatment of the growth and decay of convection in MESA with a new model for time-dependent convection, which is particularly important during late-stage nuclear burning in massive stars and electron degenerate ignition events. We strengthen MESA's implementation of the equation of state, and we quantify continued improvements to energy accounting and solver accuracy through a discussion of different energy equation features and enhancements. To improve the modeling of stars in MESA we describe key updates to the treatment of stellar atmospheres, molecular opacities, Compton opacities, conductive opacities, element diffusion coefficients, and nuclear reaction rates. We introduce treatments of starspots, an important consideration for low-mass stars, and modifications for superadiabatic convection in radiation-dominated regions. We describe new approaches for increasing the efficiency of calculating monochromatic opacities and radiative levitation, and for increasing the efficiency of evolving the late stages of massive stars with a new operator split nuclear burning mode. We close by discussing major updates to MESA's software infrastructure that enhance source code development and community engagement.</p>
Global and local drivers of the relative importance of allochthonous and autochthonous energy sources to freshwater food webs
<p>Resource quantity (i.e., organic matter; OM) is a main driver of the prevailing energy pathway in freshwater food webs. The OM pool is mainly composed of allochthonous material, a primary resource for freshwater consumers. Contrastingly, small amounts of autochthonous OM (i.e., algae) can subsidize aquatic communities due to its higher nutritional quality. To date, there is no consensus about the relative importance of allochthonous and autochthonous OMs for freshwater food webs or the environmental factors driving their relative importance. We fill this gap by evaluating the relative importance of allochthonous and autochthonous OM sources for freshwater food webs on a global scale through a meta-analytical approach. We gathered the outcome of stable isotope mixing models of 2,789 cases from 58 published studies and calculated a response ratio between the mean contributions of allochthonous and autochthonous OM for freshwater consumers. Using mixed-effect models and a multimodel inference approach, we tested the influence of latitude, habitat type, ecosystem size, climate, and terrestrial productivity over the response ratio. The relative contribution of autochthonous was higher in lotic systems. In lentic systems, increasing terrestrial productivity increased the relative contribution of autochthonous OM, while increasing precipitation and temperature seasonality reduced this relative contribution. We suggested that factors increasing terrestrial productivity might also boost autochthonous OM in these systems, while precipitation increases the transport of allochthonous OM to freshwater habitats. We did not find any relationship between environmental factors and the relative contribution of autochthonous OM for lotic systems. We concluded that the relative contribution of allochthonous and autochthonous energy sources to freshwater food webs differs between lotic and lentic ecosystems and it is dependent on multiple environmental factors.</p>
