Mexican cartels form a network of alliances and rivalries

Mexican cartels lose many members due to conflict with other cartels and arrests. Yet, despite their losses, cartels managed to increase violence for years. We address this puzzle by leveraging data on homicides, missing persons and arrests in Mexico for the past decade, along with information on cartel interactions. We model recruitment, state incapacitation, conflict and saturation as sources of cartel size variation. Results show that by 2022, cartels counted 160,000–185,000 units, becoming a top employer. Recruiting at least 350 people per week is essential to avoid their collapse due to aggregate losses. Furthermore, we show that increasing incapacitation would increase both homicides and cartel members. Conversely, reducing recruitment could substantially curtail violence and lower cartel size.

Experimental files for Dynamics of plasmas produced by a laser pulse, inside a dense gaseous target, formed in an ambient gas

Time development of plasmas produced by interaction of laser pulses, with a nitrogen gas, was investigated. The interaction took place inside a small portion of dense nitrogen gas injected temporarily into a chamber filled with the gas under low pressure. High-temperature plasmas produced directly by the laser pulse were a source of soft x rays and charged particles, ionizing and exciting the surrounding gas. In this way, low-temperature plasmas were produced. The formation of high-temperature plasmas was studied using soft x-ray spectroscopy and x-ray streak imaging. Low-temperature plasmas formed at various distances from the laser focus were investigated using an optical streak camera. The experimental data.zip file contains the experimental data from an X-ray spectrograph, X-ray streak camera and optical streak camera.

Work supported by the National Science Centre, Poland, Grant Agreement No. UMO-2020/39/B/ST2/00509

Experimental files for Investigation of low temperature plasmas formed in low density gases surrounding laser produced plasmas

Temporal and spectral investigation of plasmas produced by interaction of laser pulses, with gaseous mixtures, was performed. High-temperature plasmas produced directly by the laser pulse were a source of soft x rays and charged particles, ionizing and exciting the surrounding gas. In this way, low-temperature plasmas were produced. The formation of low-temperature plasmas was studied using optical spectroscopy and streak imaging. FEDORA. Artifacts from two study groups on inter/multi/transdisciplinary forms of knowledge organization and multi-actor contexts of knowledge construction

The dataset contains artifacts from two intensive multi-actors and inter-disciplinary study groups realized within the FEDORA project. The basic artifacts are jamboard used to collect and share experiences of interdisciplianity in terms of: barriers, features of good interdisciplinarity experiences, interdisciplinary skills, forms of knowledge organization.

The study groups involved 14 participants with diverse backgrounds (physics, chemistry, educational science, management, mathematics, philosophy, history of science, sociology, science communication). The interdisciplinary group discussions drew on the reading selected by UNIBO and experience from international projects and yielded three narratives of the barriers, conditions that facilitate interdisciplinarity, and interdisciplinary attitudes and skills to inter/multi/transdisciplinarity. The results are detailed in the deliverable D1.1 (DOI 10.5281/zenodo.7519006)

Data from: Widely naturalized species are not more promiscuous in the use of different nitrogen forms, but benefit more from inorganic nitrogen

Nitrogen (N) has been considered a crucial factor influencing invasion success. Many studies have assessed responses of alien plants to different N availabilities. However, in natural soils, N comes in different forms. Few studies have explored yet whether responses of alien species to different N forms are related to their naturalization success globally.

We selected 22 common herbaceous species native to Germany that have all become naturalized elsewhere in the world. We grew them under six different N conditions that differed in the availability or form of N, and assessed their growth performance.

We found that neither biomass production nor promiscuity to different N forms was related to naturalization success of the species. However, the biomass response to inorganic N, relative to organic N, was stronger for the widely naturalized species than for the less widely naturalized ones.

Our comparative multi-species study shows that although the widely naturalized species were not more promiscuous than the less widely naturalized species, they took more advantage of the inorganic-N forms. This indicates that naturalization success might be partly driven by a species' ability to take advantage of increased inorganic N levels.
