Fall 2005 grasshopper monitoring -- mid-marsh grasshopper abundance and species diversity at eight GCE LTER sampling sites
Grasshopper abundance and species diversity were investigated at eight sampling sites within the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems (GCE) LTER study area in August 2005. Visual surveys were conducted along 8 2m by 10m transects randomly allocated within the mid-marsh zone at each site. All grasshoppers observed within each transect were counted and identified to species, if possible. This survey was conducted as part of the GCE invertebrate monitoring program, and will be performed annually to assess long-term changes in relative species abundances across the GCE study area.
Soil respiration and temperature measurements at 5 GCE-LTER sampling sites from June 2003 to March 2005
Soil temperature and respiration were measured in tidal marshes at five GCE-LTER sampling sites. The sites represent estuaries of the Georgia coast (USA) that vary in delivery of freshwater and sediment. Replicate measurements were taken from several locations at each site (levee, marsh plain, and marsh dieback) on seven dates between June 2003 and March 2005 to evaluate the effects of freshwater input on soil respiration over time.
River Nutrient Uptake and Transport at North Temperate Lakes LTER (2005-2011)
These data were collected by Stephen Michael Powers and collaborators for his Ph.d. research, documented in his dissertation: River Nutrient Uptake and Transport Across Extremes in Channel Form and Drainage Characteristics. A major goal of this research was to better understand how ecosystem form and landscape setting dictate aquatic biogeochemical functioning and elemental transport through rivers. To achieve this goal, major and minor ions were measured in both northern and southern Wisconsin streams located in a variety of land use settings. In total, 27 different streams were sampled at 104 different stations (multiple stations per system) from both groundwater and surface water sources. Organic and inorganic carbon and nitrogen pools were also measured in northern and southern Wisconsin streams. The streams that were sampled in northern Wisconsin flow through wetland ecosystems. In sampling such streams, the goal was to better understand how wetland ecosystems influence river nutrient deliveries. There is a large amount of stream chemistry data for Big Spring Creek, WI; where the influence of a small reservoir on solute transportation and transformation was studied in an agricultural watershed. All stream chemistry data is incorporated in a single data file, Water Chemistry 2005-2011. While the data is not included in the dissertation, a sediment core study was also done in the small reservoir and channel of Big Spring (BS) Creek, WI. The results of this study are featured in three data tables: BS Creek Sediment Core Analysis, BS Creek Sediment Core Chemistry, and BS Creek Longitudinal Profile. Finally, two data tables list the geospatial information of sampling sites for stream chemistry and sediment coring in Big Spring Creek. Documentation: Powers, S.M., 2012. Effect of Long-Term Nitrogen Fertilization on Mycorrhizal Fungi Associated with a Dominant Grass in a Chihuahuan Desert Grassland at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (2005)
We studied the diversity of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in a semiarid grassland and the effect of long-term nitrogen (N) fertilization on this fungal community. Root samples of Bouteloua gracilis were collected at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge (New Mexico, USA) from control and N-amended plots that have been fertilized since 1995. Small subunit rDNA was amplified using AMF specific primers NS31 and AM1. The diversity of AMF was low in comparison with other ecosystems, only seven operational taxonomic units (OTU) were found in B. gracilis and all belong to the genus Glomus. The dominant OTU was closely related to the ubiquitous G. intraradices/G. fasciculatum group. N-amended plots showed a reduction in the abundance of the dominant OTU and an increase in AMF diversity. The greater AMF diversity in roots from N-amended plots may have been the result of displacement of the dominant OTU, which facilitated detection of uncommon AMF. The long-term implications of AMF responses to N enrichment for plant carbon allocation and plant community structure remain unclear.

Database for study on Vietnam's forest cover changes 2005-2016
<p>The database provided here forms the basis of a study which is published in the journal World Development (year 2020) under the title ' Vietnam’s forest cover changes 2005-2016: veering from transition to (yet more) transaction?'. The database contains two hundred province-level data variables provided by government agencies. The database includes potentially relevant indicators of the Vietnamese provinces’ terrain and geography (G variables), forestland and tree plantation cover/changes (F), population density/changes and ethnic composition (P), labor and poverty (L), development of infrastructure (S) and hydro-electric capacities (H), agricultural cultivations/changes and productivity (A), industrial wood processing capacities (W), illicit logging (C), forestland tenure/contracts (T), payments for forest ecosystem service (PFES) funding/coverage (E), as well as various indices of governance, institutional and public administration, and socio-economic performance (I). Each variable contains 63 data (i.e. 63 Vietnamese provinces) and is described in detail in the file, including data type and summary statistics. The variables were mostly accessible directly from government sources, or indirectly from NGOs or via international publications (the sources are indicated in the file).</p>
