GitSED: GitHub Socially Enhanced Dataset

Software Engineering has evolved as a field to study not only the many ways software is created but also how it evolves, becomes successful, is effective and efficient in its objectives, satisfies its quality attributes, and much more. Nonetheless, there are still many open issues during its conception, development, and maintenance phases. Especially, understanding how developers collaborate may help in all such phases, but it is also challenging. Luckily, we may now explore a novel angle to deal with such a challenge: studying the social aspects of software development over social networks.

With GitHub becoming the main representative of collaborative software development online tools, there are approaches to assess the follow-network, stargazer-network, and contributors-network. Moreover, having such networks built from real software projects offers support for relevant applications, such as detection of key developers, recommendation of collaboration among developers, detection of developer communities, and analyses of collaboration patterns in agile development.

GitSED is a dataset based on GitHub that is curated (cleaned and reduced), augmented with external data, and enriched with social information on developers’ interactions. The original data is extracted from GHTorrent (an offline repository of data collected through the GitHub REST API). Our final dataset contains data from up to June 2019. It comprises:

8,556,778 repositories

32,411,674 developers

6 programming languages (Assembly, JavaScript, Pascal, Python, Ruby, Visual Basic)

13 collaboration metrics

There are two previous versions of GitSED, which were originally built for the following conference papers:

v2 (May 2017): Gabriel P. EUNIS Habitat Maps: Enhancing Thematic and Spatial Resolution for Europe through Machine Learning

The EUNIS habitat classification is essential for categorising European habitats and supporting European policy on nature conservation and to implement the Nature Restoration Law. As such, to meet the growing demand for detailed and accurate habitat information, we provide spatial predictions for 260+ EUNIS habitat types at EUNIS level 3, together with validation and uncertainty analyses.

More specifically, using ensemble machine learning models together with high-resolution satellite imagery and other climatic, terrain and soil variables, we produced an European habitat map at a 100-m resolution indicating the most likely EUNIS habitat at level 3 for every location across Europe. Predictions were validated for three independent countries, namely for France, the Netherlands and Austria. We also provide information on uncertainty and the most probable habitats at level 3 within each EUNIS level 1 formation. Products can be further refined with accurate and local land cover data. This product is thus likely to be particularly useful for restoration but also conservation purposes.

Figure: Wall-to-wall map of EUNIS habitats at level 3 - (color coded at level 2 for visibility)

Exaggerated mandibles are correlated with enhanced foraging efficacy in male Auckland tree wētā

Sexual selection has driven the evolution of weaponry for males to fight rivals to gain access to females. Although weapons are predicted to increase males' reproductive success, they are also expected to incur costs and may impair functional activities, including foraging. Using feeding assays, we tested whether the enlarged mandibles of Auckland tree wētā (Hemideina thoracica) impact feeding activity (the total volume of biomass consumed, bite rate, and number of foraging visits) and foraging behaviour (time spent moving, feeding, or stationary). We predicted that increased mandible length in male wētā would hinder their feeding rates. However, we found that wētā with longer heads fed at a faster rate and spent less time foraging than wētā with smaller heads, regardless of sex. Contrary to expectations that weapons impede functional activities, our results demonstrate that exaggerated traits can improve feeding performance and may offer benefits other than increased mating success.

Bodily and Visual-Cognitive Navigation Aids to Enhance Spatial Recall in Mild Cognitive Impairment

Individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) syndrome often report navigation difficulties, accompanied by impairments in egocentric and allocentric spatial memory. However, studies have shown that both bodily cues (e.g., motor commands, proprioception, vestibular information) and visual-cognitive cues (e.g., maps, directional arrows, attentional markers) can support spatial memory in MCI. These aids offer valuable insights for designing navigation training programs in aging. Fifteen MCI patients were recruited for this study. Their egocentric and allocentric memory recall performances were tested through a navigation task with five different virtual reality (VR) assistive encoding procedures (bodily, vision only, interactive allocentric map, reduced executive load, free navigation without cues). Bodily condition consisted of an immersive VR setup to engage self-motion cues, vision only condition consisted of passive navigation without interaction, in the interactive allocentric map condition patients could use a bird-view map, in the reduced executive load condition directional cues and attentional markers were employed, and during free navigation no aid was implemented. Bodily condition improved spatial memory compared to vision only and free navigation without cues. In addition, the interactive allocentric map was superior to the free navigation without cues. Surprisingly, the reduced executive load was comparable to vison only condition. Moreover, a detrimental impact of free navigation was observed on allocentric memory across testing trials. These findings challenge the notion of an amodal representation of space in aging, suggesting that spatial maps can be affected by the modality in which the environment was originally encoded.

An enhanced author name dataset for PubMed/MEDLINE

The incompleteness of author names is a well-known issue in the MEDLINE database. It was since 2002, the full author name has been systematically indexed in MEDLINE. Although many full author names have been added to MEDLINE, we still found a significant number of abbreviated names in papers published after 2002.

Here we built an enhanced author name dataset for MEDLINE, called EAN, achieved by linking the whole PubMed to other large literature databases and conducting a large-scale name comparison and restoration with obtained multi-sources author names. Our evaluation shows that more than 90% of author names in EAN are complete as compared to the ratio of ~60% in MEDLINE.

In this paper, we study the influence these biases can have in the pervasive problem of fake news by evaluating human participants' capacity to identify false headlines. By focusing on headlines involving sensitive characteristics, we gather a comprehensive dataset to explore how human responses are shaped by their biases. Our analysis reveals recurring individual biases and their permeation into collective decisions. We show that demographic factors, headline categories, and the manner in which information is presented significantly influence errors in human judgment. We then use our collected data as a benchmark problem on which we evaluate the efficacy of adaptive aggregation algorithms. In addition to their improved accuracy, our results highlight the interactions between the emergence of collective intelligence and the mitigation of participant biases.
