Repeated erosion of sediments with biofilms from Rowley River mud flats, year 2012, Rowley, MA
This study aims to explore the interplay between biofilms and erodability of cohesive sediments. Erosion experiments were run in four laboratory annular flumes with natural sediments. Mud from the Rowley River mudflats was taken at low tide and then placed in flumes. Two of the flumes were bleach to prevent biota, while the other two were allowed to grow; nutrients were also added to the flumes. On different intervals, the flumes were eroded and the amount of erosion and velocity of the flow were measured. Additionally, each day biofilm growth was measured using Pulse-Amplitude Modulation (PAM) Underwater Fluorometry. Reported here are 10 minute averages of shear stress (derived from velocity) and suspended sediment (uncalibrated, in NTUs) along with PAM measurements. The complete dataset is available upon request via .mat files, but the dataset is quite large (kendallv@bu.edu or pie_im@mbl.edu).
MarTREC Data Set for Report: Large Scale Evaluation of Erosion Resistance of Biocementation against Bridge Scour and Roadway Shoulder Erosion
<p>Data set used for the report, "Large Scale Evaluation of Erosion Resistance of Biocementation against Bridge Scour and Roadway Shoulder Erosion". The purpose of the report was to develop an alternative approach for armoring the riverbed with biocementation through MICP to mitigate soil erosion. Long-term erosion exposed to outdoor environment, rainfall induced erosion, and accelerated erosion were conducted on MICP-treated samples to prove the feasibility of the MICP technique for potential applications in prevention of bridge scour and road shoulder erosion. The experimental work and discussion about the testing results indicated that exposing to outdoor environment could result in sharp decrease on UCS for MICP-treated samples. But the MICP-treated samples had better resistance to rainfall induced erosion. The bio-surface treatment gave significant help for cement-treated samples to resist accelerated erosion and water absorption, especially the multiple bio-surface treatments method, no erosion could be measured and 5% lower water absorption was achieved after the cement-treated sample was triple treated by bio-surface treatments. The pure MICP-treated samples were also good at resisting accelerated erosion and water absorption. Furthermore, fiber addition and multiple MICP treatments could improve their resistance. The maximum erosion rate of single MICP-treated samples reduced from 0.16 mm/min to 0 mm/min after triple MICP treatment cycles applied on the samples. Extra MICP treatments on soil samples improved the resistance to water absorption significantly. The triple MICP-treated samples achieved a 6% lower absorption than single-treated samples. All these results indicated that the bio-mediated particulate material based on MICP can provide an effective solution for problematic cases of sandy soil in prevention of bridge scour and road shoulder erosion.</p>

Data from: A regime shift from erosion to carbon accumulation in a temperate northern peatland
<p>Peatlands are globally important ecosystems but many are degraded and some are eroding. However, some degraded peatlands are undergoing apparently spontaneous recovery, with switches from erosion to renewed carbon accumulation—a type of ecological regime shift. We used a palaeoecological approach to investigate and help understand such a switch in a blanket peatland in North Wales, UK. Our data show: (a) a rapid accumulation of new peat after the switch from the eroding state, with between 5.2 and 10.6 kg m<sup>-2</sup> carbon accumulating since the beginning of the recovery which occurred between the late 1800s and early to mid‐1900s CE, with an average carbon accumulation rate in the new peat between 46 and 121 g C m<sup>−2</sup> year<sup>−1</sup>; (b) three main successional pathways in peat‐forming vegetation; and (c) hydrological changes with an increase to moderately high water‐tables after the switch that promoted new carbon accumulation as well as protecting vulnerable old carbon. External factors, including changes in climate and industrial activity, can only partially explain our results. Following previous studies, we suggest that internal ecosystem processes offer a substantial part of the explanation and interpret the switch to renewed carbon accumulation as a bifurcation‐type tipping point involving changes in the physical form of the eroded landscape. <i>Synthesis</i>. Our long‐term ecological data reveal a switch from a degraded peatland with active erosion and loss of carbon to a revegetated, wetter peatland accumulating carbon. The switch can be interpreted as a bifurcation tipping point. We suggest that external factors such as climate and pollution levels are important for setting suitable boundary conditions for peatland recovery, but internal mechanisms can explain the change in peatland state. Our study is the first of its kind to apply tipping‐point theory to the internal mechanisms linked to peat erosion and recovery and may help improve understanding of the trajectories of other peatlands in a changing climate.</p>
Trade-off between vegetation type, soil erosion control and surface water in global semi-arid regions: A meta-analysis
<p>Soil erosion control and water resource protection can closely interact during restoration of terrestrial ecosystems. In semi‐arid ecosystems, an urgent issue is how vegetation restoration can achieve the goal of soil erosion mitigation and water conservation, which in turn, feeds back to ecosystem functioning.</p> <p>We reviewed 78 articles from 22 countries in semi‐arid areas to evaluate the effects of vegetation type (i.e. forest, grassland and scrubland) on runoff and sediment yields across different environmental conditions (i.e. vegetation coverage, rainfall intensity, slope gradient and soil texture).</p> <p>Our meta‐analysis shows that runoff and sediment reduction both increased as the vegetation coverage increased, and tended to be stable when vegetation coverage exceeded 60%. Vegetation provided a greater benefit for sediment reduction than for runoff control under intense rainfall. Grasslands were generally more effective in reducing sediment than other vegetation types. Forests, grasslands and scrublands were most efficient in soil erosion control on 20°–30°, 0°–25° and 10°–25° slopes respectively. Grasslands and scrublands generally performed better with respect to soil erosion control on moderately coarse soils, whereas forests were most effective on medium‐textured and moderately fine soils.</p> <p>Synthesis and applications. Effective restoration and soil erosion control in semi‐arid ecosystems strongly depends on the selection of vegetation type. Our study further indicates that, for land managers, it is critical to consider local slope, and soil texture, and maintain appropriate vegetation coverage to achieve ecosystem sustainability. Grasslands might be particularly suitable to optimize the trade‐off between soil erosion control and surface water resource in semi‐arid regions.</p>
