The Evolution of Intermediate Mass Stars

Intermediate mass stars (M ~ 2.0 - 3.0 Msun) provide interesting constraints on stellar rotation and evolution because they live in an important transitional regime. Like massive stars, they rotate rapidly on the main sequence and have convective cores. However, they evolve to become secondary clump stars, where their structure and internal rotation can be measured with the tools of red giant asteroseismology developed for lower mass stars. We have used these tools to track these stars as they evolve, and measured their rotation, activity, and chemical mixing in various phases. I will demonstrate that the slow rotation rates of these stars provide conclusive evidence for some combination of strong post-main-sequence angular momentum loss and differential rotation with depth in convective envelopes, and discuss their core-envelope coupling as a function of time. Finally, I will discuss the relationships between rotation, activity, and mixing in these stars, and their implications for the broader population of massive stars.

Reducing pesticides without organic certification? Potentials and limits of an intermediate form of agricultural production

A growing number of farmer cooperatives cultivate crops without chemical pesticides, but also without organic certification. How does this intermediate form of agriculture between conventional and organic production function? What are the outcomes of this production form on cropland biodiversity? How does this model contribute to the transition toward more sustainable forms of agriculture? We address these research questions using original data collected in the AgroBioDiv project from the farmers' cooperative "KraichgauKorn" based in the German State of Baden-Württemberg. This cooperative is a collection of conventional farmers, who refrain from pesticide use during cultivation periods for KraichgauKorn grains, with products being produced without pesticide inputs in the growing season. Our study finds higher levels of weed species biodiversity on KGK cereal fields compared to conventional fields, but lower than organic fields. In addition, more endangered wild species monitored by the State of Baden-Württemberg were found on KGK fields than on conventional fields, with organic fields exhibiting the highest presence of endangered flora. We conclude that such kinds of enterprises may indeed contribute substantially to a successful transformation toward sustainable agricultural systems.

Size and shape data of Globigerinoidesella fistulosa, Trilobatus sacculifer and intermediate specimens from ODP Site 1115

Planktonic foraminifera are extremely well-suited to study evolutionary processes in the fossil record due to their high-resolution deposits and global distribution. Species are typically conservative in their shell morphology with the same geometric shapes appearing repeatedly through iterative evolution, but the mechanisms behind the architectural limits on foraminiferal shell shape are still not well understood. To understand when and how these developmental constraints can be overcome, we study morphological change leading up to the origination of the unusually ornate species Globigerinoidesella fistulosa. Our results show that the origination of G. fistulosa from the Trilobatus sacculifer plexus involved an amalgamation of three different heterochronic expressions: addition of chambers (hypermorphosis), earlier onset of protuberances (pre-displacement), and steeper allometric slope (acceleration) as compared to its ancestor. We argue that the protuberances unique to G. fistulosa were necessary to sustain a surface-area: volume ratio that could host sufficient numbers of photosymbionts. Our work provides a case study of the complex combination of processes required to produce unusual shell shapes and highlights the importance of developmental processes in evolutionary origination.

Effect of climate-change-induced increases on the range of rice-barley double cultivation on the intermediate egret

Intensification of cultivation methods and land use types, particularly in the face of climate change, has steadily weakened the habitat function of rice fields for waterbirds.

Intermediate egrets (Ardea intermedia) are highly dependent on rice field habitats. Here, we examine the effect of a shift from rice monoculture to rice–barley double cultivation on the use of rice fields by intermediate egrets in South Korea. Rice-barley double cultivation has been increasing steadily in the southern region of South Korea due to changes in the rice growth period under climate change and maximization of economic benefits.

We studied rice fields to determine the effect of the rice-barely double cultivation area on the abundance of intermediate egrets on the regional scale and their potential distribution pattern in response to double cultivation in relation to climate change using national-scale climate, altitude, and land cover data from May 1 to June 23, 2018.

Compared to the irrigation practices used for rice monoculture, irrigation was stopped for some time in rice-barley double cultivation prior to planting, compromising the role of rice fields as a food ground for intermediate egrets. The potential abundance of intermediate egrets rapidly decreased by half when the double cultivation area increased to >40% of the total rice-field area, and was less than one individual if the area increased to >80%. Furthermore, according to climate change projections, by 2100, the double cultivation area would account for 75.74% of the predicted range of intermediate egret foraging ground.

Synthesis and applications. Double cultivation areas should be <40% of existing rice fields to minimize the impact of the change in cultivation practices. This approach can also convert rice fields to other types of land use. Consequently, appropriate conservation and management measures may be developed to maintain suitable habitats despite rapidly changing cultivation practices resulting from climate change.

A weak subducting slab at intermediate depths below northeast Japan

Knowledge of the state of stress in subducting slabs is essential for understanding their mechanical behavior and the physical processes that generate earthquakes. Here we develop a novel framework that uses a high-resolution focal mechanism catalog to determine, for the first time, the full deviatoric stress tensor within the subducting slab at intermediate depths. We show that by combining the static stress calculated from coseismic slip distributions with the stress orientations before and after the mainshock, that deviatoric stress within the slab at intermediate depths must be very low ( ∼ 1 MPa). These results preclude earthquake source mechanisms that require large background driving stresses, favoring a mechanically weak subducting slab, thus providing quantitative constraints on the physical processes that generate intermediate-depth earthquakes.
