The linked data ecosystem for SSH and a case study from the cultural heritage domain
<p>Semantic Web, an extension of the current web, focuses on the structure of data. The aim is to develop data structures that will be more effectively processable by computers, in contrast to the limited functionality of the contemporary scriptocentric web. Semantic Web, therefore, aims to transform the web into a global ‘database’ and lead the developments toward the Web of Data. The specifications developed or related to this aim, as well as the processes and rules for achieving it, are known as Linked Data, i.e. (inter)connected data from different sources. Linked Data creates a content-agnostic, as well as software-agnostic ecosystem, which can be used for encoding and publishing all types of information from various domains.</p> <p>The first presentation of this webinar introduces the basic concepts of Linked Data and shows that Linked Data are particularly suitable for Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) since they do not emphasize metrics and quantifications but conceptualizations and reason. After presenting the paradigm shift introduced by linked data concerning the development of the web, a case study from the cultural heritage domain will be discussed.</p> <p>The second presentation showcases SearchCulture.gr, the Greek cross-domain Cultural Data Aggregator, as a state-of-the-art case, for the use of Linked data in the cultural domain. The National Documentation Centre of Greece (EKT) develops this service, which has collected a growing number of 800.000 digitized Cultural Heritage Objects (CHOs) from 73 cultural institutions. Moreover, it is the Accredited National Aggregator for Europeana having provided more than 580.000 CHOs so far. Addressing metadata heterogeneity has been a key target from the start. Controlled Linked Data vocabularies for item types, historical periods, subjects and persons have been developed over the course of the past years and are being used for the semantic enrichment of the CHOs’ metadata. This presentation addresses the challenges, methodology and tools used over the past 7 years for the process of enriching the aggregated CHOs’ metadata. This process classifies and disambiguates the aggregated data, provides multilinguality and adds significant browse and search functionalities to the portal and, therefore, opens new horizons for SSH research.</p>

Data for linked disturbance in the temperate forest: earthworms, deer, and canopy gaps
<p>Despite the large body of theory concerning multiple disturbances, there have been relatively few attempts to test the theoretical assumptions of how and if disturbances interact. Of particular importance is whether disturbance events are linked, as this can influence the probability and intensity of ecological change. Disturbances are linked when one disturbance event increases or decreases the likelihood or extent of another. To this end, we used two long-term, multi-disturbance experiments in northern Wisconsin to determine whether earthworm invasion is linked to canopy gap creation and white-tailed deer browsing. These three disturbances are common and influential within North American temperate forests, making any interactions among them particularly important to understand. We expected both deer and canopy gaps to favor invasive earthworms, particularly species that live close to or on the soil surface. However, we found only partial support for our hypotheses, as both deer exclosures and canopy gaps decreased earthworms in each experiment. Further, earthworm density increased the most over time in areas far from the gap center and in areas with deer present. Deer exclosures primarily decreased <em>Aporrectodea</em> and <em>Lumbricus</em> species, while gaps decreased <em>Dendrobaena</em> and <em>Lumbricus</em> species. Our findings show that earthworm invasion is linked to deer presence and gap-creating disturbances, which provides new insight toward multiple disturbance theory, aboveground-belowground dynamics, and temperate forest management.</p>

<p>Rainfall maps from commercial microwave link data for Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, accompanying a submission to <em>Journal of Hydrometeorology </em>(<em>JHM</em>) are store in <em>CML_rainfall_maps_Ougadougou.nc</em> . The generation of these rainfall maps is described in the manuscript.</p> <p>The data are stored in a netCDF file with the dimensions <em>x</em>, <em>y</em> and <em>time</em>, <em>longitude</em> and <em>latitude</em> values defining the grid, and the variable <em>rain_rate </em>holding the rainfall maps.</p> <ul> <li>The dataset covers the area over Ouagadougou (longitude: -1.61 to -1.415 and latitude: 12.27 to 12.45) in a regular space grid of 72x79 with 0.55 km grid size.</li> <li>The temporal resolution is 5 minutes for the period from 2020-06-29 to 2020-10-10 <em> </em></li> </ul> <p>As supplementary material an animation (<em>Animation_2020_08_21.mp4</em>) showcases two rainfall events from 18:30 to 21:00 UTC on 2020-08-21.</p>
Data from: Predictive links between petal color and pigment quantities in natural Penstemon hybrids
<p class="MsoNormal">Flowers have evolved remarkable diversity in petal color, in large part due to pollinator-mediated selection. This diversity arises from specialized metabolic pathways that generate conspicuous pigments. Despite the clear link between flower color and floral pigment production, studies determining predictive relationships between pigmentation and petal color are currently lacking. In this study, we analyze a dataset consisting of hundreds of natural <em>Penstemon</em> hybrids that exhibit variation in flower color, including blue, purple, pink, and red. For each individual hybrid, we measured anthocyanin pigment content and petal spectral reflectance. We found that floral pigment quantities are correlated with hue, chroma, and brightness as calculated from petal spectral reflectance data: hue is related to the relative amounts of delphinidin vs. pelargonidin pigmentation, whereas brightness and chroma are correlated with the total anthocyanin pigmentation. We used a partial least squares regression approach to identify predictive relationships between pigment production and petal reflectance. We find that pigment quantity data provide robust predictions of petal reflectance, confirming a pervasive assumption that differences in pigmentation should predictably influence flower color. Moreover, we find that reflectance data enables accurate inferences of pigment quantities, where the full reflectance spectra provide much more accurate inference of pigment quantities than spectral attributes (brightness, chroma, and hue). Our predictive framework provides readily interpretable model coefficients relating spectral attributes of petal reflectance to underlying pigment quantities. These relationships represent key links between genetic changes affecting anthocyanin production and ecological functions of petal coloration.</p>
Supplementary Files and Data of 'Live-bearing cockroach genome reveals convergent evolutionary mechanisms linked to viviparity in insects and beyond'
<p> Live birth (viviparity) has arisen repeatedly and independently among animals. We sequenced the genome and transcriptome of the viviparous Pacific beetle-mimic cockroach and performed comparative analyses with two other viviparous insect lineages, tsetse flies and aphids, to unravel the basis underlying the transition to viviparity in insects. We identified pathways undergoing adaptive evolution for insects, involved in uro-genital remodeling, tracheal system, heart development, and nutrient metabolism. Transcriptomic analysis in the cockroach and tsetse viviparity reveals that uterine remodeling and nutrient production are increased and the immune response is altered during pregnancy, facilitating structural and physiological changes to accommodate and nourish the progeny. These patterns of convergent evolution of viviparity among insects, together with similar adaptive mechanisms identified among vertebrates, highlight that the transition to viviparity requires changes in uro-genital remodeling, enhanced tracheal and heart development (corresponding to angiogenesis in vertebrates), nutrient metabolism, and shifted immunity in all animal systems.</p>
