False-match symmetry: Data files and simulation code

This record provides data from random-dot stereograms to use in solving the binocular correspondence problem through false-match symmetry. It also provides an implementation of the algorithm used in the article ‘Solving the stereo correspondence problem with false matches’ [Ng CJ, Farell B (2019) Solving the stereo correspondence problem with false matches. PLoSONE 14(7): e0219052. https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0219052].

The record consists of two parts, Data and Algorithm Demo. The Data component consists of pre-computed Keplerian arrays of all possible matches between filtered random-dot image pairs containing stereoscopically defined surfaces. The Algorithm Demo allows data files to be computed afresh from supplied pairs of images of various surface configurations. Plotting of data is possible in both cases. An interactive demo can also be used to explore the target image selection process.

Pollinator community predicts trait-matching between oil-producing flowers and a guild of oil-collecting bees

The impact of pollinator community diversity on trait-matching in plant-pollinator interactions is poorly studied, even though many mutualisms involve multiple interaction partners. We studied ten communities in which one to three species of oil-collecting Rediviva bee pollinate the long-spurred, oil-producing flowers of Diascia 'floribunda' to examine how pollinator diversity affects covariation of functional traits across sites and trait-matching within sites. Floral spur-length was significantly correlated with weighted grand mean foreleg length of the local bee community but not with foreleg length of individual bee species. The closeness of trait-matching varied among populations and was inversely related to pollinator community diversity. For all bee species, trait-matching was closest at sites characterized by exclusive, pairwise interactions. Reduced trait-matching associated with increased community diversity for individual pollinator species, but close matching at the community level support the importance of community context for shaping interacting traits of flowers and pollinators.

Data from: Match and mismatch: integrating consumptive effects of predators, prey traits, and habitat selection in colonizing aquatic insects

Predators are a particularly critical component of habitat quality, as they affect survival, morphology, behavior, population size, and community structure through both consumptive and non-consumptive effects. Non-consumptive effects can often exceed consumptive effects, but their relative importance is undetermined in many systems. Our objective was to determine the consumptive and non-consumptive effects of a predaceous aquatic insect, Notonecta irrorata, on colonizing aquatic beetles. We tested how N. irrorata affected survival and habitat selection of colonizing aquatic beetles, how beetle traits contributed to their vulnerability to predation by N. irrorata, and how combined consumptive and non-consumptive effects affected populations and community structure. Predation vulnerabilities ranged from 0–95% mortality, with size, swimming, and exoskeleton traits generating species-specific vulnerabilities. Habitat selection ranged from predator avoidance to preferentially colonizing predator patches. Attraction of Dytiscidae to N. irrorata may be a natural ecological trap given similar cues produced by these taxa. Hence, species-specific habitat selection by prey can be either predator-avoidance responses that reduce consumptive effects, or responses that magnify predator effects. Notonecta irrorata had both strong consumptive and non-consumptive effects on populations and communities, while combined effects predicted even more distinct communities and populations across patches with or without predators. Our results illustrate that an aquatic invertebrate predator can have functionally-unique consumptive effects on prey, attracting and repelling prey, while prey have functionally-unique responses to predators. Determining species-specific consumptive and non-consumptive effects is important to understand patterns of species diversity across landscapes.

Scots pine log end face images for developing identity matching methods for tree logs

For developing log identification methods, i.e., "face recognition" methods for log individuals, a total of 493 unique Scots pine logs were photographed to create this data set of 4930 log end face images.

The photography was completed in two sessions, each lasting one working day. In the first session, each log was photographed from five different perspectives: directly head-on, plus four other imaging angles. In the second session, which took place five days later, the same photography procedure was repeated for each log.

The data is structured into directories as <log number>/<imaging day>/<angle index>.jpg, where <log number> is the uniquely identifying number for each individual log, imaging day is either 01 (meaning the first imaging session) or 02 (meaning the second imaging session), and angle index is an integer from 0 (the direct head-shot image) to 4, where indeces from 1 to 4 signify the other imaging angles besides the direct head-on perspective.

Please see the publication at https://doi.org/10.1016/j.atech.2023.100201 for more details.

Interactions between protea plants and their animal mutualists and antagonists are structured more by energetic than morphological trait matching

Traits mediate mutualistic and antagonistic interactions between plants and animals, and should thus be useful for predicting trophic species interactions. Studies to date have examined the importance of morphological trait matching for plant-animal interactions, but have rarely explored the extent to which these interactions are shaped by matching between energetic provisions of plants and energetic demands of animals.

We tested whether energetic and/or morphological trait matching shapes interactions between Protea plant species and their interacting animal mutualists and antagonists in the Cape Floristic Region, South Africa.

We recorded interactions between 22 Protea species, pollinating insects, and vertebrates as well as seed predators (endophagous insect larvae in protea cones) at 21 study sites. To relate species interactions to matching trait pairs, we measured key morphological traits (shape and size of flower heads and seed cones, and mouth part length as well as body length) and quantified the animals' energetic demands (metabolic rate) together with the plants' energetic provisions (nectar sugar amount, seed-to-cone mass ratio). We calculated log ratios of both energetic and morphological traits between animals and plants as predictor variables for the number of observed interactions between Protea species and their animal interaction partners.

For both mutualistic and antagonistic interactions, we found significant effects of morphological and energetic trait ratios on the interactions between plants and animals. Trait ratios accounted for 11% to 22% of the variation in species interactions. Consistent with energetic trait matching, we found a hump-shaped relationship between interaction frequency and log ratios of energetic traits of animals and plants, indicating that interactions were most frequent at intermediate log ratios between energetic demand and provision. Effects of morphological trait ratios on interactions were statistically supported in most cases but were variable in the magnitude and shape of the predicted relationships.

Across animal taxa and interaction types, energetic traits had more consistent effects on interactions between plants and animals than morphological traits. This suggests that energy can function as an important interaction currency and facilitate the understanding and prediction of trophic species interactions.
