Murchison Falls National Park Uganda Woody Plant and Palm Inventory Plots 2022
Murchison Falls National Park (MFNP) is a protected area in northern Uganda along the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo and straddling the Victoria Nile. This project was designed to assess the accuracy of woody cover maps developed in (Nagelkirk & Dahlin, 2020). We determined an area of interest and then identified 40 plots that we expected would range from zero to nearly 100% woody cover. Due to restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic, we could only spend six days in the field, and so our sampling time was limited. We were able to collect 36 30x30 m square plots (four plots were not measured due to safety or accessibility issues). In each, we collected data describing woody plant species, when possible, diameter at breast height (DBH) or basal diameter depending on the size of the plant, and two crown diameter measurements: one at the widest width and another approximately perpendicular to the first. Together these measurements allow us to estimate woody plant canopy cover and basal area, along with species diversity both by count and by basal area. With additional information, aboveground biomass, functional diversity, and phylogenetic diversity could also be estimated in the future. Although this project was limited in scope, since eastern African savannas are underrepresented in global databases of woody cover and aboveground biomass, this data set will contribute to our overall understanding of vegetation patterns and processes.
Using Biodiversity Data to Assess Species-Habitat Relationships in Glacier National Park, Montana
Biodiversity surveys are becoming increasingly popular. However, standard analysis techniques for these data have not yet been developed. This paper explores the use of multivariate ordination techniques for assessing species-habitat relationships using biodiversity data. The research was conducted in Glacier National Park, Montana, and birds and butterflies were chosen as the taxonomic groups of study. Biodiversity assessment sites were established through a range of habitats and monitored from 1987 through 1989. Presence/absence sampling over the total number of sampling sites was used to classify species commonness and rarity. Approximately 86% of the historically recorded butterflies and 70% of the historically recorded bird species have been observed in the 3 yr of sampling. During the 3 yr of this study there was a striking continuity of species richness per site. There was also a striking overlap between the sites that support high species diversity and sites that support rare species. Principal components analysis and cluster analysis worked well in discerning species-habitat relationships. Elevation, structural diversity of the site, and moisture were the major factors explaining species distributions. A chi-square analysis also provided some insights into species-habitat relationships, showing birds were more habitat specific than butterflies. Habitat diversity analyses demonstrated a positive but non-significant correlation between remotely sense spectral-class diversity of a site and species richness for both birds and butterflies. Aspect, slope and elevation diversity had a negative or negligible relationship with species richness.
Conifer seed delivery after the Berry Fire Grand Teton National Park, USA, 2018
These data were collected by NS Gill, TJ Hoecker, and MG Turner in Grand Teton National Park from July-October 2018. The dataset represents seed delivery and surrounding forest structure and demographics following the 2016 Berry Fire, used to examine the relationship between fire regime change and conifer seed delivery in Pinus contorta var. latifolia forests. Stand structure and cone abundance were quantified at 21 sites positioned at the edges of the burned area in 50-m transects. Seed delivery was measured in seed traps placed at distance intervals running out to 100 m into burned patches from the live forest edge over a period of three months. Pinus contorta, Picea engelmannii, and Abies lasiocarpa seeds were collected. Five meteorological stations were deployed throughout the study area. Wind speed and direction data were attributed to transects from the nearest of these deployed meteorological stations.
Virgin Islands National Park: Coral Reef: Decadal-scale changes in community structure from 1987 to 2011
These time series data sample percent cover of Scleractinian corals by genus measured from photo quadrats. Percent cover is given for each quadrat, each site, each year from 1987 to 2011. Counts of juvenile corals conducted in situ and small colonies less than 4 cm diameter are pooled from all sites. Supplementary data include in situ seawater temperature daily mean from 1989 to 2011. Virgin Islands National Park: Coral Reef: Populations Dynamics: Population Projections
In this study, size-based matrix models for the reef-building coral Orbicella annularis at 14-m depth on the Tektite reef in St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands, were used to: (1) explore the demography of changing coral cover over 25 yr, (2) test for spatial homogeneity in demographic properties through a contrast with a previous study (at Yawzi Point, Edmunds and Elahi 2007), and (3) evaluate the potential for future population stability. During three, five year intervals from 1988 to 2002, St. John was affected by hurricanes and bleaching, yet coral cover at Tektite increased from 33% to 49%; from 2002 to 2007, it declined to 27%; and from 2010 to 2013, it stabilized at ∼ 28%. Over a quarter-century, colonies > 50 cm2 became rare, the abundance of colonies ≤ 50 cm2 increased from 58% (1988) to 92% (2013), and population density doubled to 67 colonies m-2 by 2013. Population growth (λ) was greater at Tektite (1.152 ≥ λ ≥ 1.018) than Yawzi Point (0.679 ≥ λ ≥ 0.586), and while population size at Tektite declined due to bleaching and disease in 2005 (λ = 0.753 over 2003–2008), it recovered between 2008 and 2013 (λ = 0.966); the population at Yawzi Point declined from 1988 to 2003 without signs of recovery. Projections suggest a continuation of recent conditions could allow O. annularis at Tektite to retain ∼ 9% cover after 100 yr, but with a return to the rates of growth and survival of 1993–1998, it could attain coverage similar to that of 1988 (33%) in ∼ 15 yr.
Virgin Islands National Park: Coral Reef: Population Dynamics: Octocorals
These data are evidence of the the long-term dynamics of shallow coral reefs along the south coast of St. John from as early as 1987. These data describe coral reef community structure by density based on the analysis of color photographs. All of these data originate from color images of photoquadrats recorded annually (usually in the summer) from as early as 1987. The data falls into three groups. The two groups that are contained in this data package are (1) Tektite & Yawzi and (2) Random sites. Tektite – this is at 14 m depth on the eastern side of Great Lameshur Bay and is the original site of the Tektite man-in-the sea project in 1969; this project marked the birth of the Virgin Islands Ecological Research Station (later the Virgin Islands Environmental Resource Station) that hosts the field component of the project. The reef in this location consists of a single buttress that has remained dominated by Montastraea anularis since the start of the research (1987). These surveys consist of 30 photoquadrats (1 x 1 m) distributed along three, 10 m transects. Yawzi – this is at 9 m depth and is on the western side of Great Lameshur Bay and has been recorded photographically since 1987. This reef also started the study period dominated by Montastraea annularis, but has degraded much more rapidly that the Tektite site. These surveys consist of 30 photoquadrats (1 x 1 m) distributed along three, 10 m transects. Random sites – were added in 1992 to address the concern that the original sites (Yawzi and Tektite) were selected on “good” areas of reef and, therefore, could only decline in condition. The Random sites were selected using random coordinates in 1992, and consist of 6 sites (at 7-9 m depth) scattered between Cabritte Point and White Point. All lie a little shoreward of Yawzi and Tektite, and have always been characterized by low coral cover (< 10% cover). In early years photos were analyzed with less refined taxonomic classsification. This reference table may be used to aggregate taxa to align with coarse analysis. Use this table to define sub-categories and super-categories such as the M. annularis complex. This is a reference dataset containing the taxonomic classifications, groupings of taxonomic classifications, and functional groups. It has been updated in accordance with Budd, et al., 2012.

Monitoring permafrost thaw in Denali National Park and Preserve: year one of data collection 2013
Transects were established at six sites in the Toklat river basin, Denali National Park and Preserve. This was the fist year of what will be a long-term monitoring project of permafrost and ecosystem characteristics. Transects were co-located with known thaw subsidence (thermokarst) features and run from outside (relatively undisturbed tundra) through the feature.

Treelines in Alaska are advancing in elevation and latitude because of climate warming, which is expanding the habitat available for boreal wildlife species, including snowshoe hares (Lepus americanus). Snowshoe hares are already present in tall shrub communities beyond treeline and are the main browser of white spruce (Picea glauca), the dominant tree species at treeline in Alaska. We investigated the processes involved in a 'snowshoe hare filter' to white spruce establishment near treeline in Denali National Park. Because multiple factors interact to influence browsing of spruce, including the hare cycle, snow depth and the characteristics of surrounding vegetation, we collected an array of site variables relevant to spruce-hare interactions in Denali National Park, Alaska. Site variables collected included elevation, landscape position, vegetative cover, and the density of white spruce seedlings, saplings and trees.

We hypothesized that surrounding vegetation would influence the likelihood of spruce being browsed by hares. Therefore, at each plot we estimated ramet density for all associated woody vegetation using one square-meter subplots. Within these subplots we also counted the total number of hare fecal pellets found on the ground.

We investigated the processes involved in a 'snowshoe hare filter' to white spruce establishment near treeline in Denali National Park. We modeled the pattern of spruce establishment from 1970 to 2009 and found that fewer spruce established during periods of high hare abundance. To do so, we measured several demographic attributes of white spruce in Denali National Park, including spruce height, basal diameter, browsing history and age.
Microclimate data from stations within the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, NC
This dataset contains measurements of air temperature, relative humidity, soil temperature, soil bulk electrical conductivity, and soil volumetric water content from a sites located in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, NC. Soil temperature, soil bulk electrical conductivity, and soil volumetric water are measured at 0-30cm and 30-60cm below ground surface at locations 25 meters above gradient and 25 meters below gradient of a central transect location where air temperature and relative humidity are measured at 1.5 meters above ground surface. Measurements are taken every 60 seconds with average, minimum, and maximum values saved hourly to the output table.

Dissolved nutrients are measured using standard rapid flow analyzer (RFA) techniques and DOC is quantified on a Shimadzu TOC Analyzer.

Sawgrass above ground biomass from the Taylor Slough, just outside Everglades National Park (FCE), South Florida from October 1997 to December 2006
Sawgrass biomass is measured for TS/Ph-1, 2, 3, & 6 since 1999; TS/Ph-4 & 5 since 1997 to 2006; SRS-1b, 2, & 3 since 2000; SRS1c for 2005 to 2006, and SRS1d since 2006. Three 1 m2 plots are placed on each site. The sites are measured every two months. The number of sawgrass plants is counted for each 1 m2 plot and one third or a minimum of fifteen plants is measured. For each measured plant, measurements of the total number of live leaves, length of the live leaves, and culm diameter at the base are taken. From these measurements we calculate the average leaf length, and the sum of the length of the leaves. We created a model for biomass using a stepwise regression to see which of the variables measured and calculated are more correlated to explain plant biomass. Obtaining the mean biomass for the plants within the plot and multiplying it by the number of plants counted in the plot calculates biomass for each plot. The total biomass for each plot is summed with the other two plots in the same site, and they are averaged to obtain one biomass number per site. To validate our model, plant clippings are obtained in which four plants are clipped (small, medium, large, inflorescence) from each site. The same measurements are applied to the clipped plants as those applied to the measured plants in the plots. The plant clippings are oven dried at 70 degrees C and weighed.

Rain level is recorded at least every thirty minutes at TS/Ph4 and TS/Ph5 (data since 2000). Rain level data are collected using ISCO rain level gages attached to ISCO autosamplers, which also act as dataloggers. We condense these data into daily cumulative rainfall, although hourly rain level data are also available.

Seawater intrusion into a coastal aquifer mixes with the discharging fresh water to form a zone of mixed composition. This mixing zone is considered to be geochemical important in a carbonate aquifer as an area of enhanced carbonate mineral dissolution and,or precipitation. Ion exchange reactions are also common within the mixing zone as the dominant cation in seawater, sodium, replaces other ions adsorbed to the aquifer matrix. Phosphorus has a strong affinity for adsorption to calcium carbonate minerals. Both the dissolution of calcium carbonate minerals as well as ion exchange reactions have the potential to release phosphorus from the aquifer matrix to the groundwater. Discharge of this phosphorus-laden groundwater, as induced by the fresh/saline water interface, may then be an additional source of phosphorus to the overlying coastal environments. Both surface water and groundwater were collected across the seawater intrusion zone of the coastal Everglades in south Florida during the summer of 2003. Hydrogen sulfide was released from the groundwater wells during sampling, indicating the groundwater was most likely anoxic. In order to reduce the potential exposure of the groundwater to oxygen during sampling, groundwater samples were collected in the following manner. Groundwater wells were first purged of at least three well volumes prior to sampling. Water samples were then collected using a submersible pump with a 16-gauge needle fitted at the end of the discharge hose. The needle was pushed through a rubber stopper covering an acid-washed vacutainer that was first flushed with nitrogen gas to remove and oxygen, then evacuated with a vacuum pump to establish a negative pressure within the vacutainer. Water samples were stored on ice and transported to the laboratory. Samples were processed for total phosphorus using colorimetery following dry-oxidation/acid hydroloysis methods within 1 to 5 days following sample collection. Salinity of the groundwater and surf
Water Temperature measured at Shark River, Everglades National Park (FCE) from October 2007 to August 2008
American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) are top predators in the Florida Coastal Everglades (FCE), but their movement patterns and role in the ecosystem are largely unknown. Proposed restoration and management efforts in the Everglades are likely to influence both alligator movements and the spatiotemporal patterns of their effects on ecosystem and community dynamics, making studies of the factors influencing alligator movements important at this time. In October 2007, we initiated a study of alligators in the Shark River Slough of Everglades National Park using two tracking techniques that have yet to be used on crocodilians: GPS tracking and passive acoustic telemetry. GPS units attached to two alligators have provided 120 positions over a two month period while acoustic transmitters attached to 12 alligators have been detected 34,000 times on an array of 8 monitoring stations within the river system. GPS positions are more accurate than acoustic monitoring and can provide data over the entire range an alligator might move, but acoustic transmitters provide more temporally detailed information on movements within a monitoring array and over a longer duration (potentially years rather than months). Our preliminary results show that alligators may remain in localized areas for weeks at a time, but make long-distance moves from the mouth of the river system to the marsh-mangrove ecotone and likely into the marsh. In general, most alligators moved upstream as freshwater inputs decreased, but some individuals remained near the river mouth even when salinities were high. Ultimately, by characterizing alligator movements in relation to spatiotemporal variation in environmental factors we will be able to predict how alligator distributions and populations will respond to planned increases in freshwater flow.
