Interactions of pharmaceutical companies with world countries, cancers and rare diseases from Wikipedia network analysis

<p>Using the English Wikipedia network of more than 5 million articles we analyze interactions and interlinks between the 34 largest pharmaceutical companies, 195 world countries, 47 rare renal diseases and 37 types of cancer. The recently developed algorithm using a reduced Google matrix (REGOMAX) allows us to take account both of direct Markov transitions between these articles and also of indirect transitions generated by the pathways between them<br> via the global Wikipedia network. This approach therefore provides a compact description of interactions between these articles that allows us to determine the friendship networks between them, as well as the PageRank sensitivity<br> of countries to pharmaceutical companies and rare renal diseases. We also show that the top pharmaceutical companies in terms of their Wikipedia PageRankvare not those with the highest market capitalization.</p>

Frog nest foams exhibit pharmaceutical foam-like properties

<p>Foams have frequently been used as systems for the delivery of cosmetic and therapeutic molecules; however, there is high variability in the foamability and long-term stability of synthetic foams. The development of pharmaceutical foams that exhibit desirable foaming properties, delivering appropriate amounts of the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) and that have excellent biocompatibility is of great interest. The production of stable foams is rare in the natural world; however, certain species of frogs have adopted foam production as a means of providing a protective environment for their eggs and larvae from a predators and parasites, to prevent desiccation, to control gaseous exchange, temperature extremes, and to reduce UV damage. These foams show great stability (up to 10 days in tropical environments) and are highly biocompatible due to the sensitive nature of amphibian skin. This work demonstrates for the first time, that nests of the Túngara frog (<i>Engystomops pustulosus</i>) is stable <i>ex situ</i> with useful physiochemical and biocompatible properties and is capable of encapsulating a range of compounds, including antibiotics. These protein foam mixtures share some properties with pharmaceutical foams and may find utility in a range of pharmaceutical applications such as a topical drug delivery systems (DDS).</p>

Small intestinal microbiota data of pigs receiving control or pharmaceutical levels of ZincOxide

<p>To improve our understanding of host and intestinal microbiome interaction, this research investigated the effects of a high level zinc oxide in the diet as model intervention on the intestinal microbiome and small intestinal functionality in clinically healthy post-weaning piglets.</p> <p>In study 1 piglets received either a high concentration of zinc as zinc oxide (Zn, 2690 mg/kg) or a low Zn concentration (100 mg/kg) in the diet during the post weaning period (d 14-23). We investigated the effects on the piglet&rsquo;s small intestinal microbiome and functionality of intestinal tissue. In study 2 we investigated the impact of timing of the dietary zinc intervention, i.e. between d 0-14 and/or d 14-23 post weaning, and the consecutive effects on the piglet&rsquo;s intestinal functionality. We acquired data on the microbiota composition in small intestinal digesta and gene expression profiles of both jejunum and ileum tissue.</p> <p>Overall, we observed differences in the small intestinal functionality during the post weaning period between piglets receiving a diet with a low or high concentration ZnO content.</p>

Pharmaceutical effects on biofilm functioning quantified via contaminant exposure substrates presented in Rosi et al. 2018.

An ongoing component of the Baltimore urban long-term ecological research (LTER) project (Baltimore Ecosystem Study, BES) is the use of the watershed approach and monitoring of stream water quality to evaluate the impacts of multiple chemical stressors on urban stream ecosystem functioning within Baltimore. The LTER research has focused on the Gwynns Falls watershed, which spans a gradient from highly urban, urban-residential, and suburban zones. In addition, a forested watershed serves as a reference. The long-term sampling network includes four longitudinal sampling sites along the Gwynns Falls mainstem, as well as several small (40-100 ha) watershed within or near the Gwynns Falls, providing data on water quality in different land use zones of the watersheds. Each study site is continuously monitored for discharge and is sampled weekly for water chemistry. Those data are available elsewhere on the BES website. We are interested in studying the effects of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) on stream biofilm functioning within urban streams. We constructed and deployed contaminant exposure substrates (CES) in four streams within the greater Baltimore, Maryland, USA area to measure the responses of biofilms in each of the four streams to caffeine, ciprofloxacin, cimetidine, diphenhydramine, and no PPCPs. We incubated CES for 2 weeks in the four different streams, with five replicate CES for each treatment being randomly placed on plastic L-bars within each stream. After the two-week deployment, we used the light-dark incubation approach to estimate gross primary production and community respiration via change in dissolved oxygen (DO) for biofilms colonizing substrates (either cellulose sponges to select heterotrophic biofilms or fritted glass disks to select for autotrophic biofilms) topping each CES.
