<p>This data set accompanies the publication "Towards a comprehensive framework of the relationships between resource footprints, quality of life and economic development" by Stefan Cibulka and Stefan Giljum from the Institute for Ecological Economics at the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU).</p> <p>The file provides data on resource footprints (carbon footprint, material footprint), Human Development Index, Happiness Index as well as GDP for countries world-wide in the time span from 1990 to 2015. Data from: Economic costs and health-related quality of life for hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) patients in China
Background: Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) is a common illness in China that mainly affects infants and children. The objective of this study is to assess the economic cost and health-related quality of life associated with HFMD in China. Method: A telephone survey of caregivers were conducted in 31 provinces across China. Caregivers of laboratory-confirmed HFMD patients who were registered in the national HFMD enhanced surveillance database during 2012-2013 were invited to participate in the survey. Total costs included direct medical costs (outpatient care, inpatient care and self-medication), direct non-medical costs (transportation, nutrition, accommodation and nursery), and indirect costs for lost income associated with caregiving. Health utility weights elicited using EuroQol EQ-5D-3L and EQ-Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) were used to calculate associated loss in quality adjusted life years (QALYs). Results: The subjects comprised 1136 mild outpatients, 1124 mild inpatients, 1170 severe cases and 61 fatal cases. The mean total costs for mild outpatients, mild inpatients, severe cases and fatal cases were $201 (95%CI $187, $215), $1072 (95%CI $999, $1144), $3051 (95%CI $2905, $3197) and $2819 (95%CI $2068, $3571) respectively. The mean QALY losses per HFMD episode for mild outpatients, mild inpatients and severe cases were 3.6 (95%CI 3.4, 3,9), 6.9 (95%CI 6.4, 7.4) and 13.7 (95%CI 12.9, 14.5) per 1000 persons. Cases who were diagnosed with EV-A71 infection and had longer duration of illness were associated with higher total cost and QALY loss. Conclusion: HFMD poses a high economic and health burden in China. Our results provide economic and health utility data for cost-effectiveness analysis for HFMD vaccination in China.
Data from: Is the association between health-related quality of life and fatigue mediated by depression in patients with multiple sclerosis? A Spanish cross sectional study
Objectives: To determine the mediating effects of depression on health-related quality of life and fatigue in individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS). Design: A cross-sectional study. Setting: Tertiary urban hospital. Participants: One hundred and eight patients (54% women) with MS participated in this study. Outcome measures: Demographic and clinical data (weight, height, medication, and neurological impairment), fatigue (Fatigue Impact Scale-FIS), depression (Beck Depression Inventory-BDI/II) and health-related quality of life (Short-Form Health Survey 36 - SF36) were collected. Results: Fatigue was significantly associated with bodily pain, physical function, mental health and depression. Depression was associated with bodily pain and mental health. The path analysis found direct effect from physical function, bodily pain and depression to fatigue (all, P<0.01). The path model analysis revealed that depression exerted a mediator effect from bodily pain to fatigue (B=-0.04, P<0.01) and from mental health to fatigue (B=-0.16 P<0.01). The amount of fatigue explained by all predictors in the path model was 37%. Conclusions: This study found that depression mediates the relationship between some health-related quality of life domains and fatigue in people with MS. Future longitudinal studies focusing on proper management of depressive symptoms in individuals with MS will help to determine the clinical implications of these findings.

Data from: Shelf life and quality of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) fruits as affected by neem leaf extract dipping and beeswax coating
<p>The data was generated to investigate the effect of Beeswax (BW) coating and Neem leaf extract (NLE) dipping on the shelf life and quality of tomatoes (<em>Lycopersicon esculentum</em> Mill.) over a storage period of 36 days. A factorial combination of four levels of Neem plant extract (control, 15%, 20% and 25%) and four levels of beeswax coating (control, 3%, 6% and 9%) storage treatments with three replications were applied on fully matured green tomatoes in the study. The treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block design. The average storage room air temperature and relative humidity varied from 15.2 ºC to 20.4 ºC and 55.53% to 69.46% RH during 36 days of storage period at Haramaya University from February to April 2020. Data were recorded on 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, and 36 days after storage. Data on physiological loss in weight, chemical compositions (total soluble solids, pH, titratable acidity, and ascorbic acid), decay (%), percentage marketability, and shelf life were assessed at an interval of four days during 36 days of storage period under ambient conditions.</p>
Long-term health-related quality of life, healthcare utilisation and back-to-work activities in Intensive Care Unit survivors: prospective confirmatory study from the Frisian Aftercare Cohort
<p>More substantial information on recovery after Intensive Care Unit (ICU) admission is urgently needed. In a previous retrospective study, the proportion of non-recovery patients was 44%. The aim of this prospective follow-up study was to evaluate changes Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) in the first year after ICU-admission. Long-stay adult ICU-patients (≥ 48 hours) were included. HRQoL was evaluated with the Dutch translation of the RAND-36 item Health Survey (RAND-36) at baseline via proxy measurement, and at three, six, and twelve months after ICU admission. Subsequently, the relation between physical functioning, healthcare utilisation, and work activities was explored. </p>

Can time heal anything? Exposure to traumatic events, autobiographical memory, and the quality of life among older adults. The role of time perspective.
<p><span><span> </span><strong><span>Objectives</span></strong>. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between autobiographical memory, exposure to traumatic events, and quality of life, and also whether temporal perspective represents a significant mediator of these relations, in a group of elderly people. <strong><span>Method</span></strong>. The study was conducted using a sample of 362 participants (<em>M</em>age = 68.35, <em>SD</em> = 6.67; 65.5% women and 34.5% men). They completed the questionnaires for measuring quality of life, exposure to traumatic events, autobiographical memory, and time perspective. <strong><span>Results</span></strong>. The results indicated that direct exposure to major traumatic life events negatively predicted quality of life, while autobiographical memory was not a predictor for quality of life. Time perspective (i.e., negative past, negative future) partially mediated the relationship between exposure to traumatic life events and quality of life. At the same time, the temporal perspective mediated the relationship between autobiographical memory and quality of life. <strong><span>Discussion</span></strong><span>. How people manage their lives after exposure to traumatic events should be of particular interest to society as a whole and it is necessary to take into account various factors related to quality of life, especially in the case of elderly people. To improve quality of life, interventions can address the physical and psychological dimensions, as well as social interactions and the quality of the environment in which people live.</span></span></p>
Complementary and Alternative Medicine Use and its Impact on Quality of Life among Cancer Patients in Freetown, Sierra Leone: Considerations for a Resource-Limited Setting
<p> </p> <p><span>Cancer patients are increasingly resorting to complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) to alleviate the effects of the disease and enhance their quality of life (QoL). However, to our knowledge, no study has investigated CAM use and its impact on QoL in patients with cancer in Sierra Leone. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the prevalence of and associated factors with CAM use, and compare the quality of life between CAM users and non-users.</span></p> <p><span>This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted at three health facilities in Freetown viz Connaught Hospital Ola During Children's Hospital, and the Water and Stone Clinic. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews, using an adapted questionnaire. The QoL was assessed using the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer tool. Descriptive analysis was employed, and binary logistic regression tests were used to explore the associated factors of CAM use, with statistical significance set at p<0.05.</span></p> <p><span>In total, 204 participants completed the study. The prevalence of CAM use was 48.5%. Among the various CAMs examined in this study, herbal medicines (48.8%) followed by special foods (19.4%) were the most commonly used forms of CAM. The primary reason for CAM use was the management of cancer complications (43.4%). Over half of the CAM users did not disclose their CAM use to their doctors (53.5%). There was a statistically significant association between CAM use and tertiary education (AOR=2.68, 95%CI=1.31-5.49, p=0.007) and chemotherapy treatment (AOR=1.91, 95%CI= 1.06-3.46, p=0.032). There was no considerable impact of CAM on QoL, although financial difficulty was statistically significant among CAM users compared with non-CAM users.</span></p> <p><span>This study revealed that CAM use is prevalent among cancer patients, with herbal medicines being the most commonly used form, followed by special foods and prayers. <span> </span>Patients primarily obtain information about CAM from family, friends, and relatives, and most do not discuss CAM use with their doctors. Tertiary education and chemotherapy were found to be predictors of CAM use. Regarding the impact of CAM on QoL, only financial difficulty was statistically significant.</span></p>
