Hash data files for "Hashes are not suitable to verify fixity of the public archived web"

This work investigates the fixity of a set of archived webpages, or mementos. We conducted a study on 16,627 mementos from 17 public web archives. We replayed and downloaded the mementos 39 times using a headless browser over a period of 442 days and generated a hash for each memento after each download, resulting in 39 hashes per memento. The hashes were generated by creating Merkle trees to represent hashes at each level of the memento. A hash was generated for each resource used to construct the full webpage and then the hashes were combined to generate an overall hash for the composite memento.

There are 39 data files, one for each download.

The mementos downloaded come from the dataset at https://github.com/oduwsdl/mementos-fixity/

Based and confused: Tracing the political connotations of a memetic phrase across the web

Data was gathered in November 2021. All files are anonymised as much as possible. They contain:

Comments on 4chan and Reddit mentioning "based". False positives were filtered out until the precision was over 0.9. See filtering steps below.

Reddit: Comments mentioning "based" between 2010-01-01 and 2021-11-01. Collected via the Pushshift API. Data from deleted subreddits may be absent in their last month.

4chan/pol/: Posts and comments mentioning "based" between 2013-11-28 and 2021-11-01. Data derived from 4plebs and 4CAT.

Twitter data was not included for ethical reasons, but constitutes: Tweets mentioning "based" between 2010-01-01 and 2021-11-01. The following time periods are incomplete or missing entirely:

15 - 16 April 2019

14 - 15 December 2019

3 - 10 December 2020

29 March 2021

10 - 12 April 2021

16 - 18 August 2021

11 October 2021

The 4plebs archive moreover only started in November 2013, meaning the first two years of /pol/’s existence are missing.

The data returned by the Pushshift API did not return posts for certain dates. We somewhat mitigated this by also retrieving data through the new Beta endpoint. However, the following time periods were still missing data:

1 - 30 September 2017

1 February - 31 March 2018

5 - 6 November 2020

23 March 2021 through 27 March 2021

10 - 13 April 2021

Filtering

Afterward initial data collection, we carried out several rounds of filtering to get rid of remaining false positives. For 4chan/pol/, we only needed to do this filtering once (attaining 0.95 precision), while for Twitter we carried out eight rounds (0.92 precision). For Reddit, we formulated nearly 500 exclusions but failed to generate a precision over 0.9. We thus had to do more rigorous filtering. We observed that longer comments were more likely to be false positives, so we removed all comments over 350 characters long. We settled on this number on the basis of our first sample; almost no true positives were over 350 characters long. Furthermore, we removed all comments except for those wherein based was used as a standalone word (thus excluding e.g. “plant-based”), at the start or end of a sentence, in capitals, or in conjunction with certain keywords or in certain phrases (e.g. “kinda based”). We also deleted posts by bot accounts by (rather crudely) removing posts of usernames including ‘bot’ or ‘auto’. This finally led to a precision of 0.9.

Filters used for the 4chan/pol/ data.

-based|location based

Data from: Functional diversity buffers the effects of a pulse perturbation on the dynamics of tritrophic food webs

Biodiversity decline causes a loss of functional diversity, which threatens ecosystems through a dangerous feedback loop: this loss may hamper ecosystems' ability to buffer environmental changes, leading to further biodiversity losses. In this context, the increasing frequency of human-induced excessive loading of nutrients causes major problems in aquatic systems. Previous studies investigating how functional diversity influences the response of food webs to disturbances have mainly considered systems with at most two functionally diverse trophic levels. We investigated the effects of functional diversity on the robustness, i.e. resistance, resilience and elasticity, using a tritrophic ---and thus more realistic---plankton food web model. We compared a non-adaptive food chain with no diversity within the individual trophic levels to a more diverse food web with three adaptive trophic levels. The species fitness differences were balanced through trade-offs between defense/growth rate for prey and selectivity/half-saturation constant for predators. We showed that the resistance, resilience and elasticity of tritrophic food webs decreased with larger perturbation sizes and depended on the state of the system when the perturbation occurred. Importantly, we found that a more diverse food web was generally more resistant and resilient but its elasticity was context-dependent. Particularly, functional diversity reduced the probability of a regime shift towards a non-desirable alternative state. The basal-intermediate interaction consistently determined the robustness against a nutrient pulse despite the complex influence of the shape and type of the dynamical attractors. This relationship was strongly influenced by the diversity present and the third trophic level. Overall, using a food web model of realistic complexity, this study confirms the destructive potential of the positive feedback loop between biodiversity loss and robustness, by uncovering mechanisms leading to a decrease in resistance, resilience and potentially elasticity as functional diversity declines.

Supplementary Data for: Shifts in food webs and niche stability shaped survivorship and extinction at the end-Cretaceous

This compendium of files includes a list of statistical routines (Data S1) and cleaned fossil datasets from the Paleobiology Database (Data S2 to S3) for the Science Avances paper "Shifts in food webs and niche stability shaped survivorship and extinction at the end-Cretaceous". Data S1 and Data S2 can be opened in Microsoft Office and Data S3 can be imported in R using the load() command. Data S2 and S3 contain the same information (i.e., cleaned fossil datasets) but in different formats (xlsx vs. RData).

Please, feel free to send an email to the maintainer Dr. Jorge García Girón (jogarg@unileon.es) if you face any trouble downloading, opening or using these files.

Data from: Open access levels: a quantitative exploration using Web of Science and oaDOI data

This is the raw data behind the publication (on PeerJ Preprints):

Open access levels: a quantitative exploration using Web of Science and oaDOI data

Across the world there is growing interest in open access publishing among researchers, institutions, funders and publishers alike. It is assumed that open access levels are growing, but hitherto the exact levels and patterns of open access have been hard to determine and detailed quantitative studies are scarce. Using newly available open access status data from oaDOI in Web of Science we are now able to explore year-on-year open access levels across research fields, languages, countries, institutions, funders and topics, and try to relate the resulting patterns to disciplinary, national and institutional contexts. With data from the oaDOI API we also look at the detailed breakdown of open access by types of gold open access (pure gold, hybrid and bronze), using universities in the Netherlands as an example. There is huge diversity in open access levels on all dimensions, with unexpected levels for e.g. Portuguese as language, Astronomy & Astrophysics as research field, countries like Tanzania, Peru and Latvia, and Zika as topic. We explore methodological issues and offer suggestions to improve conditions for tracking open access status of research output. Finally, we suggest potential future applications for research and policy development. We have shared all data and code openly.

Data of an exploratory, open-ended user study (N = 255) to advance knowledge and uncover relations between the different facets of web search on debated topics. We explored the relations between factors inherent to the searcher and search system (user characteristics, exposure bias), search intercations (confirmation bias, position bias, search effort), and post-search epistemic states (attitude change, knowledge gain). This data set contains the following variables for each of the 255 participants: SERP ranking bias, prior knowledge, attitude strength, receptiveness to opposing views, attitude-confirming clicks, click rank deviation, number of clicks, time on SERP, hover depth, attitude change, knowledge gain.
