Morphogenesis of curved strutural envelopes - Presentation of the PhD work of Xavier Tellier

This video is a recording of a live presentation of the PhD work of Xavier Tellier. It is also hosted at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iw4Hetw9lnY. Here is a summary of the dissertation:

Curved structural envelopes combine mechanical efficiency, architectural potential and a wide design space to fulfill functional and environment goals. The main barrier to their use is the complexity of manufacturing, assembly and design. Significant progress has been made recently in the field of architectural geometry to tackle this issue, but many challenges remain. In particular, the following problem is recurrent in a designer’s perspective: Given a constructive system, what are the possible shapes, and how to reach them in an intuitive fashion?

This thesis presents a panorama of morphogenesis (i.e shape creation) methods under fabrication constraints. It then introduces four new methods to generate families of surfaces with particular geometrical properties which can significantly simplify the manufacturing of curved structures. Most common typologies are considered: gridshells, plated shells, membranes and funicular vaults. A particular attention is devoted to how surfaces are controlled in order to guaranty an intuitive generation.

Two of the proposed families allow to design novel structural systems, while the two others combine fabrication properties with inherent mechanical efficiency. The feasibility of these new structural morphologies is demonstrated by the construction of two pavilions.

Data from: What can we learn about beat perception by comparing brain signals and stimulus envelopes?
Entrainment of neural oscillations on multiple time scales is important for the perception of speech. Musical rhythms, and in particular the perception of a regular beat in musical rhythms, is also likely to rely on entrainment of neural oscillations. One recently proposed approach to studying beat perception in the context of neural entrainment and resonance (the "frequency-tagging" approach) has received an enthusiastic response from the scientific community. A specific version of the approach involves comparing frequency-domain representations of acoustic rhythm stimuli to the frequency-domain representations of neural responses to those rhythms (measured by electroencephalography, EEG). The relative amplitudes at specific EEG frequencies are compared to the relative amplitudes at the same stimulus frequencies, and enhancements at beat-related frequencies in the EEG signal are interpreted as reflecting an internal representation of the beat. Here, we show that frequency-domain representations of rhythms are sensitive to the acoustic features of the tones making up the rhythms (tone duration, onset/offset ramp duration); in fact, relative amplitudes at beat-related frequencies can be completely reversed by manipulating tone acoustics. Crucially, we show that changes to these acoustic tone features, and in turn changes to the frequency-domain representations of rhythms, do not affect beat perception. Instead, beat perception depends on the pattern of onsets (i.e., whether a rhythm has a simple or complex metrical structure). Moreover, we show that beat perception can differ for rhythms that have numerically identical frequency-domain representations. Thus, frequency-domain representations of rhythms are dissociable from beat perception. For this reason, we suggest caution in interpreting direct comparisons of rhythms and brain signals in the frequency domain. Instead, we suggest that combining EEG measurements of neural signals with creative behavioral paradigms is of more benefit to our understanding of beat perception.
The input files and associated data products for "Modeling High Mass X-ray Binaries to Double Neutron Stars through Common Envelope Evolution"

Simulations were made using the version 12115 of the MESA code together with the x86_64-linux-20190830 MESA SDK. "template.zip" provides the MESA inlist files to reproduce our simulations. "CE_1.zip" provides our simulated results for a grid of binary systems with common envelope ejection efficiencies set to be 1.0. Different folders indicate the binary systems with different initial parameters. Inside each folder information can be found for binary properties in the "history.data" file. Each folder also contains the "result.txt" file with the terminal output of the simulation. "CE_3.zip", "CE_0.3.zip" and "CE_0.1.zip" are the same as "CE_1.zip" but with common envelope ejection efficiencies set to be 3.0, 0.3 and 0.1, respectively.

Inlists for paper: Stripped-Envelope Stars in Different Metallicity Environments I. Evolutionary Phases, Classification and Populations

MESA input files for the models presented in the paper "Stripped-Envelope Stars in Different Metallicity Environments I. Evolutionary Phases, Classification and Populations".

The files included here can reproduce both the stellar models discussed in the paper (he_star_model.zip), as well as the initial helium star models (initial_model.zip). Some models used different numerical parameters to achieve convergence to core collapse. A table (MESA_params.dat) is included here with the specific models that have parameters that differ from the standard ones, and the value used for the parameters used in these models. To reproduce a model from this list, the parameters must be changed in the inlist_project file contained in he_star_model.zip.

Also included is a table (lifetimes.dat) containing values of different parameters used in each simulation, as well as the data obtained from these models, used to create Figs. 4 and 5.
