Coral bleaching due to cold stress on a central Red Sea reef flat

Ocean warming is leading to more frequent coral bleaching events. However, cold stress can also induce bleaching in corals. Here, we report observations of a boreal winter bleaching event in Jan 2020 in the central Red Sea, mainly within a population of the branching coral Stylophora pistillata on an offshore reef flat. Sea surface temperatures rarely fall below 24°C in this region, but data loggers deployed on several nearby reef flats recorded overnight seawater temperatures as low as 18°C just three days before the observations. The low temperatures coincided with an extremely low tide and cool air temperatures, likely resulting in the aerial exposure of the corals during the nighttime low tide event. The risk of aerial exposure is rare in winter months, as the Red Sea exhibits seasonal fluctuations in sea level with winter values typically 0.3-0.4m higher than in summer. These observations are notable for a region typically characterized as a high-temperature sea, and highlight the need for long-term monitoring programs as this rare event may have gone unnoticed.

Data for: Whole Animal Feed FLat (WAFFL): A complete and comprehensive validation of a novel high-throughput fly experimentation system

Non-mammalian model organisms have been essential for our understanding of the mechanisms that control development, disease, and physiology, but they are underutilized in pharmacological and toxicological phenotypic screening assays due to their low throughput in comparison with cell-based screens. To increase the utility of using Drosophila melanogaster in screening, we designed the Whole Animal Feeding FLat (WAFFL), a novel, flexible, and complete system for feeding, monitoring, and assaying flies in a high-throughput format. Our 3-D printed system is compatible with inexpensive and readily available, commercial 96-well plate consumables and equipment. Experimenters can change the diet at will during the experiment and video record for behavior analysis, enabling precise dosing, measurement of feeding, and analysis of behavior in 96-well plate format.

A Flat-lying Transitional Free Gas to Gas Hydrate System in a Sand Layer in the Qiongdongnan Basin of the South China Sea

Most marine gas hydrate systems follow a vertical pattern with gas hydrate overlying free gas. Here we document the discovery of a novel flat-lying transitional gas to hydrate system in a horizontal sand layer in the Qiongdongnan Basin of the South China Sea. Eight wells were drilled by the Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey in 2021-2022 to investigate the occurrence and mechanisms responsible for the formation of the system. We describe a free gas-bearing sand reservoir at the center of the system sustained by advecting hot fluids and gas; away from the advecting zone, the cooler, surrounding sand reservoir is filled with gas hydrate. Observations at this site show that temperature has a large control on hydrate formation in sands and may be a key mechanism which allows gas migration and hydrate formation in high-saturation hydrate filled sands.

Data of Forced-response characterization of PBF-LB/AlSi10Mg particle dampers with thin and flat cavities

Powder Bed Fusion (PBF) enables the production of complex geometries which offer the opportunity to manufacture lightweight, stiffness-optimised or integrally designed components. Although these properties are usually advantageous for the performance in many applications, they pose disadvantages under vibration as they lead to low damped components. These are prone to high vibration amplitudes which result in higher sound radiation and a reduced lifetime. Particle damping can counteract these disadvantages. By including cavities during the design process, unmelted powder remains inside the component after its production. This powder dissipates energy under vibration by inelastic impacts and friction in particle-–particle or particle-–wall-interactions, increasing the damping characteristics of the component. In this work, additively manufactured AlSi10Mg specimens with cavities are investigated with respect to their damping characteristics by experimental modal analysis. The focus of the investigation is on thin and flat cavities that can be easily integrated into components without adapting the external geometry. The damping characteristics in dependence on excitation amplitude and mode are quantified. The extent to which settling effects of the powder during shaking influence the damping is analysed. The vibration of the specimens is forced by an electrodynamic shaker and their response is measured contactlessly via Scanning Laser Doppler Vibrometry (SLDV). A damping effect of up to 564% depending on the mode, excitation amplitude and specimen can be achieved. In addition, a significant settling effect of the powder which hampers the damping effect is identified by CT scans and modal analysis.
The data of the CT scans as well as the data of the modal analysis is uploaded here.

Synthetic flat ntuples in the ROOT data format

These two datasets contain flat ntuples in the ROOT data format, synthetically produced using a ROOT macro. ROOT is the typical data format for storing High Energy Physics (HEP) data. In the ROOT context, a flat ntuple stores data not in the form of C++ object but each branch contains simple numbers (e.g. floating point numbers, integers) or vectors whose dimension might vary on an event-by-event basis.

The two datasets have similar content and we distinguish them by adding the suffix bkg and sgn which stands for background and signal. There is no specific physics meaning behind these data. The two datasets contain both 5M of events and 50 branches, of which 10 contain integers, 10 floating point numbers, 10 vectors of integers, and 20 vectors of floating point numbers. The distributions used to fill the datasets are: gaussian, uniform, and exponential. The two datasets differ only on the content of two branches filled with vectors of floating point numbers, where a different mean and standard deviation have been set.

These datasets have been produced to test the performance of the MLaaS4HEP framework. More info on the MLaaS4HEP framework in https://doi.org/10.1007/s41781-021-00061-3
